To be exact, thoughts of the future have kept me up countless nights and made me worry enough to do poorly on more than one test. Because of this, words of wisdom are a source of comfort. Steve Jobs gave a speech to Stanfords graduating class in 2005 and his words resound repeatedly in my mind whenever I think about my future. It started when I became a junior, when college came into view. Its the first big step to make your life your own. So when Jobs discussed his life as a student, some fears were eased. He also felt the need to attend college to make something of himself. He faced what many are extremely afraid of: uncertainty. His lack of understanding caused him to stop attending college and focus on what he felt was important. His story had a happy ending, of course, since he certainly turned out well. This doesnt mean that students shouldnt attend college, but rather that they shouldnt worry so much. Youll get where you need to go, even if your path is a bit more winding than youd like.Jobs talked about the hardships in his work. His love of his work helped him carry on and he got where he was meant to be, which restates the point: dont panic. One particular part of his speech stayed with me. Steve Jobs quoted the saying “Stay hungry, stay foolish” and it has become my motto. Staying foolish is realizing that you are still a fool, no matter how much youve learned or experienced. There is always more to explore. Staying hungry is wanting to find those things about which you are still uneducated.Steve Jobs level of success is possible to achieve, and I aim to prove that. With the will power 第4页 (共12页)to go into the world living every day like its my last and allowing the future to take care of itself, I will do great things. In the last moments of my life, Ill be proud of what I have done and hope to have all the wisdom a person could wish for. 41. This is like when heat is trapped in a car. On a hot day, the car gets hotter when it is out in the parking lot. This is because the heat and light from the sun can get into the car, by going through the windows, but it cant get back out. This is what the greenhouse effect does to the earth. The heat and light can get through the atmosphere, but it cant get out . As a result, the temperature rises.Sometimes the temperature can change in a way that helps us. The greenhouse effect makes the earth suitable for people to live on. Without it, the earth would be freezing, or it would be burning hot. It would be freezing at night because we would not get the suns heat and light. During the day, especially during the summer, it would be burning because the sun would be up with no atmosphere to filter (过滤) it, so people, plants, and animals would be exposed to all the light and heat.Although the greenhouse effect makes the earth able to have people living on it, if there are too 第5页 (共12页)many gases, the earth can get unusually warmer, and many plants, animals and people will die. Plants would die because they would not be able to take the heat. This would cause us to have less food to eat, and it would also limit the food that animals have. With less food for the animals that we need to survive we would even have less food. Gradually, people, plants, and animals would all die of hunger. People are doing many things to try to stop global warming. One thing is carpooling-driving with someone to a place that you are both going to. Another thing is being more careful about leaving electrical devices turning on. Now, more people are even riding buses or bikes to lower the amount of greenhouse gases in the air. Although adults do many things to help stop global warming, kids call do just as much.46. It does great harm to humans.C. It makes the earth neither to hot nor too cold.D. It prevents all the light from the sun shining on the earth.49. What global warming is doing to the environment.D. Why cars and buses pollute the air a lot第6页 (共12页)C Do you like shopping? Or does the thought of wandering round the shops fill you with terror? For some of us, shopping is an enjoyable way of spending our spare time and our money. For me, its something I would rather avoid. Thank goodness for the Internet! Its more convenient to buy CDs, electrical items, even food, from the comfort of your sofa. But thats not the only reason: price is an important factor. We can buy goods and services cheaper online. But sometimes the problem is knowing what to buy. This has led to a type of shopping called “showrooming”. Showrooming is something Ive done. I will go to a shop to see, touch and try out products but then go home and buy them online at a knockdown price. Im not alone in doing this. Research by a company called Foolproof, found 24of people showroomed while Christmas shopping in 2013. Amy Cashman, Head of Technology at TNS UK, says the reasons for this new shopping habit are that “people are lacking time, lacking money and they want security about the products they are buying.” She explains that consumers are not only shopping online at home but they are using the Internet in store or on their smartphones to shop around. But does this mean technology will kill shops? Certainly shops will change. They will have to offer more competitive prices or encourage people to buy more by giving instore discounts or free gifts. We mustnt forget that buying in a shop means you can get expert advice from the sales assistant and you can get good aftercare. Its good to speak to a real human rather than look at a faceless computer screen but at least by showrooming, you get the best of both worlds!51.The two questions in Paragraph 1 are raised to A. give two examplesB. introduce the topicC. compare different opinions D. get answers from readers52.
