摘要 在语言学中，言语行为的研究具有举足轻重的地位。恭维语极其应答是一种特殊的言 语行为。恭维语是积极评价，它涉及恭维者本人的个人素养，审美取向，它是一种复杂的 言语行为。从广义上讲，它是说话者向对方或直接或含蓄地表达赞许的一种言语行为。实 际上，恭维语是一种普遍存在的语言现象，它具有多种的社会功能，起着问候、鼓励、致 谢和开启话题急缓解矛盾的作用。但是每个民族都有不同于其它民族的文化和语言，不同 的语言受到各自文化的影响，其恭维语因此也具有本民族特有的表现模式和内容，恭维在 功能，对象和制约因素等方面都有所不同，呈现出鲜明的民族特色。中美两国人民属于不 同的民族，因此在恭维语的使用和应答等方面存在着诸多的差异。在以往一些学者的基础 上，本文拟从中美恭维语的语言形式和应答，制约因素以及从文化层次上的对比研究，指 出在跨文化交流中，只掌握语言本身是远远不够的，更应该熟悉语言背后的文化及其差异。 因此本文还从文化的角度分析了在恭维语实现过程中由于文化差异可能造成的误解及原 因，这对于从事外语教学和研究者以及跨文化交流都具有重要意义。 本文分为七章： 第一章中简单介绍本文对英汉恭维语对比研究的原因、标准、方法以及本文组织结构。 第二章从理论的角度介绍了与恭维语这一言语行为有关的理论研究内容；交际能力、 社会语言能力、合作原则和礼貌原则。 在第三章中，作者先介绍了恭维语的定义，主要比较了恭维语在汉语和美国英语这两 种语言中的差异。比较结果表明，无论是汉语还是美国英语，在语言形式方面，恭维语是 一种非常形式化的言语行为，有限的词汇少数的句法就能构成人类常用的恭维语。但是在 美国英语中的恭维语缺乏创造性，不如汉语中的恭维语具体和多样化。本章还介绍了恭维 语的话题，1 ) 外貌仪表，2 ) 成就或能力，3 ) 个人素质。最后还介绍了恭维语的功能。 第四章介绍了恭维语的应答形式。本文揭示出在两种语言中，恭维应答方式都可以 分为两大类：拒绝和赞成。美国人并不象人们通常认为的那样在任何情况下都接受恭维， 他们有时也会拒绝恭维，中国人也不是人们公认的那样对于别人的恭维总是表现为拒绝。 他们也接受别人的恭维，只是美国人对恭维语倾向于接受，而中国人则倾向于不接受或不 正面接受。虽然中国人同样也爱听到恭维的话，但在口头上，多数人的应答还是倾向于拒 绝。本章还探讨了影响实施恭维语这一言语行为的因素，如：性别、年龄、亲密程度。 在第五章中，作者从跨文化的角度进一步对英汉恭维语进行了比较。比较的方面包括： 语言形式、恭维话题以及恭维应答形式。 第六章探讨了英汉恭维语研究在中西文化交流以及英语教学方面的应用。
