Even her dogs stopped trying to steal a free tasty snack.“I bought the meal on April 10 this year and brought home to see how it changed,” she said. “I chose McDonalds because it was nearest to my house, but the project could have been about any other fast food. The first thing that shocked me on the second day of the experiment was that it no longer gave out any smell. And my dogs stopped circling the shelf.”Sally expected the food to go mouldy after a few days. In fact, Mrs. Davies surprise turned to shock as the food still had not shown any signs of decay after two weeks. “It was then that I realized that something strange might be going on with this food that I had bought,” she explained. “The appearance of the food did not change as the weeks turned to months. And now, at six months old, the food is plastic to touch. The only change that I can see is that it has bee as hard as a rock.”The experiment has brought her amusement rather than fear. “Maybe I would be frightened at seeing this if I were a meat eater.” she said.24. McDonalds Happy Meal shows no sign of decay after six months COne day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more weapon for her to defeat my strange problem inability to read. In the library, I found my way into the “Childrens Room.” I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf at random. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of a beagle. I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal panion I ever had as a child. He was my secret sharer, but one morning, he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him. I never forgot my beagle. There on the books cover was a beagle which looked identical to my dog. I ran my fingers over the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the title, Amos, the Beagle with a Plan. Unknowingly, I had read the title. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer. Under the shade of a bush, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very sl owly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated fr om his family and who finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog, and I was the little boy in the book. At the end of the story, my mind continued the final scene of reunion, on and on, until my own lost dog and I were, in my mind, running together. My mothers call returned me to the real world. I suddenly realized something: I had read a book, and I had loved reading that book. Everyone knew I could not read. But I had read it. Books could be incredibly wonderful and I was going to read them. I never told my mother about my “miraculous” (奇迹般地) experience that summer, but she saw a slow but remarkable improvement in my classroom performance during the next year. And years later, she was proud that her son had read thousands of books, was awarded a PhD in literature, and authored his own books, articles, poetry and fiction. The power of the words has held. 28.The authors mother told him to borrow a book in order to _. DA black hole is created when a large star burns out. Like our sun, stars are unbelievably hot furnaces(熔炉) that burn their own matter as fuel. When most of the fuel is used up, the star begins to die.The death of a star is not a quiet event. First there is a huge explosion. As its outer layer is blasted off into space, the dying star shines as brightly as a billion suns. After the explosion, gravity pulls in whats left of the star. As the outside of the star sinks toward the center, the star gets smaller and smaller. The material the star is made of bees tightly packed together. A star is so solid that a teaspoon of matter from it weighs billion of pounds. The more the star shrinks(收缩), the stronger the gravity inside it bees. Soon the star is very tiny, and the gravity pulling it in is unbelievably strong. In fact, the gravity is so strong that it even pulls light into the star! Since all the light is pulled in, none can go out. The star bees black when there is no light. Then a black hole is born!Thats what we know about black holes. What we dont know is this: What happens inside a black hole after the star has been squeezed into a tiny ball? Does it keep getting smaller and smaller forever? Such a possibility is hard to imagine. But if the black hole doesnt keep shrinking, what happens to it? Some scientists think black holes are like doorways to another world. They say that as the star disappears from our universe, it goes into another universe. In other words a black hole in our universe could turn into a white hole in a different universe. As the black hole swallows(吞噬) light, the white hole shines brightly-somewhere else. But where? A different place, perhaps, or a different time-many years in the past or future.Could you travel through a black hole? Right now, no. Nothing we know of could go into a black hole without being crushed(挤压). So far the time being, black hole must remain a mystery.Black holes are a mystery-but that hasnt stopped scientists from dreaming about them. One scientist suggested that in the future we might make use of the power of black holes. They would supply all of Earths energy needs, with plenty to spare. Another scientist wondered if a black hole could some day be used to swallow earthly waste-a sort of huge waste disposal(处理) in the sky!32. When the star begins to die _.A. there is no fuel left in itB. a huge explosion will happen C. its outer layer goes into space firstD. it doesnt give off light any longer33. Which of the following doesnt help produce a black hole?A. The dying star shines very brightly.B. The light cant go out of the star.C. The star bees smaller and smallerD. The gravity inside the star is very strong.34. The black hole _.A. continues being smaller and smaller all the timeB. goes into another universe and bees a white holeC. will appear at another place at a different timeD. can pull in everything we know of in the world35. Whats the best title for this passage?A. A New Scientific Discovery: Black Holes B. What Are Black Holes?C. What Are Black Holes? How Do Black Holes e Into Being?D. Part of the problem is that we have wrong information and beliefs about this important health need. Lets set the facts straight. 36 1. More sleep is better for you. There could be such a thing as too much sleep. The amount of sleep we need varies by person and also changes as we age. Harvard researchers found that a lot of sleep (9 hours or more) is linked with poor sleep quality. _37_ Aim for better sleep.2. 38 Alcohol can help most people fall asleep. However, it also can cause you to wake up more during the night, decreasing your sleep quality. Consider drinking non-alcoholic drink before bed instead.3. If you wake up in the middle of the night, lie in bed until you eventually fall back asleep. 39 We all hope to quickly fall back asleep. So we tend to stay in bed hoping itll happen at any minute now. If that doesnt happen, though, within 15 minutes, most experts remend getting out of bed to do something that occupies our bodies and brains without overstimulating us. Try not to check the clock either.4. You can catch up on sleep on weekends. When we lose sleep during the week, we accumulate a kind of sleep debt. 40 Not so fast. This might actually make you sleepier the next week. Instead of waking up later on the weekends, youd better go to sleep earlier or perhaps take a nap in the afternoon.A. Alcohol helps you sleep.B. Here are some things you might have been told about sleeping but arent pletely true.C. Everyone should get 78 hours of sleep per night.D. So dont aim for more sleep even on the weekends.E.
