Section B Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage. Science cant explain the power of pets, but many studies have shown that the company of pets can help lower blood pressure and raise chances of recovering from a heart attack, reduce loneliness and spread all-round good cheer. Any owner will tell you how much joy a pet brings. For some, an animal provides more comfort than a husband or wife. A study by Karen Allen of the State University of New York measured stress levels and blood pressure in people - half of them pet owners while they performed 5 minutes of mental arithmetic or held a hand in ice water. Subjects completed the tasks alone, with a life partner, a close friend or with a pet. People with pets did it best. Those tested with their animal friends had smaller change in blood pressure and returned most quickly to baseline heart rates. With pets in the room, people also made fewer math mistakes than when doing in front of other companions. It seems people feel more relaxed around pets, says Allen, who thinks it may be because pets dont judge. A study reported last fall suggests that having a pet dog not only lifts your spirits but may also have an effect on your living habits. Researchers at Northwestern Memorial Hospital spent a year studying pet owners and found they got more exercise mostly with their dogs and found it worth doing. Questions 11. Which of the following is not the power of pets? 12. Why can people make fewer math mistakes with a pet beside them? 13. Every day, the alarm clock announces the start of another busy weekday in the morning. We jump out of bed, rush into the shower, into our clothes and out the door with hardly a moment to think. The way most of us spend our mornings is exactly opposite to the conditions that promote flexible, open-minded thinking. Imaginative ideas are most likely to come to us when were unfocused. The stress slows down the speed with which signals travel between neurons, making inspirations less likely to occur. And while we all should read a lot about whats going on in the world, it would not make us feel good for sure, so put that news website or newspaper aside until after the days work is done.So what would our mornings look like if we wanted to start them with a full capacity for creative problem solving? Wed set the alarm a few minutes early and lie awake in bed, following our thoughts where they lead. Wed stand a little longer under the warm water of the shower, stopping thinking about tasks in favor of a few more minutes of relaxation. Wed take some deep breaths on our way to work, instead of complaining about heavy traffic. And once in the office, after we get a cup of coffee, wed click on links not to the news of the day but to the funniest videos the web has to offer. Questions: 14. When are we most creative? 15. Which of the following is true about newspapers? 16. What does the speaker suggest that we should do?Section C Longer Conversations Blanks 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.
