She was surprised because the postman and the milkman had already been there, and she wasnt expecting any visitors. She went into the front room and pulling the curtain back a little, looked out of the window to see who it was. A man was standing on the steps leading to the front door.He was a tall, broad-shouldered man wearing an old army coat and big black hat pulled forward over his eyes, so it was difficult to see his face clearly. His shoes, Mrs. Brown noticed, were old and dirty and there was a large hole in his trousers. He carried a small black bag in his hand.As she looked at him, Mrs. Brown remembered stories she had read in the newspapers about old ladies who opened to strangers, and were hit on the head and had their things stolen. She felt rather frightened. “I am not going to open the door”, she said to herself, “If I dont, perhaps hell think theres no one in and go away.” She let the curtain fall back into place and waiting. The man looked round quickly, put his hand in his pocket, drew out his keys, and began to try them one by one in the front door.1. Mrs. Brown looked out of the window because_. A. she was expecting a visitor B. she had never any visitorsC. she wanted to see who was there D. she thought it might be the milkman2. The man on the door steps_. A. was wearing an army cap B. was dressed as a soldier C. had holes in his trousers D. had a grey hat over his eyes3. Mrs. Brown was frightened because she remembered something _. A. she had read B. she had been told C. she had seen happen D. she knew would happen4. The man began to try the keys in the door_. A. while Mrs. Brown was watching him B. before Mrs. Brown saw him. C. after Mrs. Brown had left the curtain fall D. when Mrs. Brown first saw him B Starting high school life can be extremely exciting and at the same time nerve-wracking. You may worry about all these things: what classes to take, what to wear on the first day of school and what will everyone think of you? But so far high school has been the best experience for me ever. On my first day of high school, I asked a senior where my class was, and he told me it was on the fourth floor, next to the pool. I found out five minutes later that we didnt even have a fourth floor and had no pool either! Besides that event, I didnt have any trouble with the older kids.I think the biggest difference between middle and high school is the homework load and the size of the school. I went from fifteen minutes of homework a night to several hours, so I had to learn time management pretty quickly! Our class size was around 550, so being exposed (暴露) to so many new people was a big change. Getting involved in clubs, sports, music and other activities at school makes it easier to get to know people in every grade its always useful to have an upperclassman friend! The best suggestion I can give about the four years you spend in high school is to learn things for the sake of learning, not just to get a good grade. There have been so many tests that Ive crammed (突击式学习) on the night before and got an A, but now I dont remember anything. Ive changed that this year, and I enjoy school so much more. Relating to academics, dont take easy classes just to have a simple year. If you have a choice between “AP Chemistry” and “Racquet Sports”, the first will prove to be more useful!5On the first day of high school, the author _.Afailed to adapt himself to a new environmentBfound it was hard for him to get on with new classmates Cwas teased by a senior studentDlost his way in the schoolyard6Which of the following is TRUE about the authors advice on high school life?AMaking as many upperclassmen friends as possible.BTaking an active part in various afterschool activities.CTrying to obtain useful knowledge instead of getting good grades.DChoosing easy but useful courses instead of practical ones.7In writing the text, the author intends to _.Atell others his first day experience at high schoolBexpress his opinions on high school educationCdescribe what can be learnt at high schoolDshare his life and thoughts at high schoolCBy far the most common difficulty in study is simple failure to get down to regular concentrated work. This difficulty is much greater for those who do not work to a plan and have no regular routine of study. Many students muddle along ,doing a bit of this subject or that ,as the mood takes them, or letting their set work pile up until the last possible moment.Few students work to a set timetable .They say that if they did work out a timetable for themselves they would not keep to it ,or would have to change it frequently ,since they can never predict (foresee) from one day to the next what their activities will be .No doubt some students take much more kindly to a regular routine than others .There are many who shy away from a self-controlled weekly timetable ,and dislike being tied down to a fixed programme of work .Many able students state that they work in cycles .When they become interested in a topic they work on it attentively for three or four days at a time .On other days they avoid work completely .It has to be admitted that we do not fully understand the motivation(动机)to work .Most people over 25 years of age have become used to a work routine ,and the majority of really productive workers set aside regular hours for the more important areas of their work .The “tough-minded” school of workers doesnt fully accept the idea that good work can only be done naturally ,under the influence of inspiration(灵感).Those who believe that they need only work and study as the fit takes them have a mistaken belief either in their own talent or in the value of “freedom” .Freedom from control and discipline (纪律)leads to unhappiness rather than to “self-expression” or “personality development” . Our society insists on regular habits ,timekeeping and punctuality (准时),and whether we like it or not ,if we mean to make our way in society ,we have to meet its demands.8. The most widespread problem in applying oneself to study is _ .A. changing from one subject to anotherB. the failure to keep to a set timetable of workC. the unwillingness to follow a systematic planD. working on a subject only when one feels like it9. Which of the following is true? _A. Many students are not interested in using a self-controlled timetable.B. Many students dont like being told to study to a fixed timetable.C. Most people over 25 years of age dont work to a set timetable.D. Tough-minded people agree that good work is done naturally.10. The underlined part “as the fit takes them” in paragraph 4 means.A. when they have the energy B. when they are in the moodC. when they feel fit D. when they find conditions suitable11. A suitable title for the passage might be _A. Attitudes to Study B. A Study PlanC. The difficulties of Studying D. Study and Self-disciplineDMost people know that Marie Curie was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize, and the first person to win it twice. However, few people know that she was also the mother of a Nobel Prize winner. Born in September, 1987, Irene Curie was the first of the Curies two daughters.
