Those scientists landed NaSas robot, Spirit, on the planet Mars. But this was neither Courtneys first nor her last adventure in space research. When she was in fifth grade, Courtney had already decided to spend her life “exploring the mysteries of the universe”. She checked out space books from her library, studied hard in math and science classes, and later, attended United States Space Camp in Alabama. Then Courtney entered a contest to become part of the Student Astronaut program run by a group called the Planetary Society. After a lot of hard work, interviews, and months of waiting, Courtney found out that she was one of 16 students who made itout of 500 entered.Courtney and fellow student astronaut Rafael Morozowski, a 16yearold from Brazil, were at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California with NASA scientists when Spirit reached Mars.“The most exciting part of the thing occurred late at night on January 3, when we received signals indicating that Spirit had landed successfully,” Courtney says. “I joined the rest of the scientists in jumping up and cheering.”Courtney and Rafael spent seven nights working with and learning from the NASA scientists. (They worked at night because that was daying on Mars.) They studied the photographs that Spirit was sending to Earth of Gusev Crater on Mars. They spoke to television reporters at NASA press conferences and attended meetings in which the NASA team named the rocks and hills that Spirit was finding. When Courtney was 17 years old, she went to work for NASA as a student intern at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. With two NASA scientists, Courtney plans to study astrophysics or planetary science at Princeton University, then return to work at NASA. She encourages other kids and teens to follow their dreams of getting involved with space research.【解题导语】本文是一篇记叙文,主要介绍了Courtney从小立志要探索宇宙奥秘,到现在为止,她在太空研究方面做出了许多努力和贡献,同时鼓励其他孩子要追逐参与探索太空的梦想。4What can we learn about Courtney from Paragraphs 1 and 2?AShe was one of the 16 students to be interviewed.BShe landed on the planet Mars at the age of 15.CShe entered the Student Astronaut program easily.DShe desired to study the universe at her early age.D解析:细节理解题。 5Which of the following best describes Courtney?AEnthusiastic and serious.BOptimistic and productive.CDetermined and hardworking. Most times the task is easily accomplished with parents reading or talking to their babies. However, in some cases that is not possible due to busy work schedules or when kids are born deaf. Now, an adorable blueeyed robot, a human avatar, and some hightech neuroscience may be able to assist parents with this important developmental task. The Robot AVatar thermalenhanced system, or RAVE, is the brainchild of a team of researchers led by Laura Ann Petitto, an educational neuroscientist, at Washington,D.C.s Gallaudet University. The learning process begins when the robots camera, which is focused on the babys face, detects tiny changes in his/her body temperature. This, combined with the babys facial expression, causes the robot to turn its head and guide the babys attention to a computer screen, on which a human avatar starts to communicate with the baby, much like a parent would. For example, if the baby points towards the screen, the avatar might respond, “Are you pointing to me?” and follow that up with a nursery rhyme, fairy tale, or some essential social communication, all in American Sign Language(ASL). The “conversation” continues until the kid loses interest. The researchers, who have been testing the system for three years, found that babies as young as 6 to 8 months old began to move their hands in a rhythm similar to ASL after interacting with RAVE for just a few minutes. Petitto says natural language, whether communicated through speech or sign, activates the same parts of the brain and believes the rhythmic motions prove the babies are learning the essential elements of communication. What sets this technique apart from other methods, such as showing educational videos or television shows, is its interactive nature and realtime response to the babys actions. The researchers say that while it is too early to determine the systems longterm influence on baby communication, the initial response has been very encouraging. Next, they plan to introduce an avatar that can both sign and speak to babies.【解题导语】本文是一篇科普说明文,主要介绍了一种可以帮助父母教婴儿学习语言的系统,以及该系统的工作原理、效果评价和研究人员对这种技术的展望。8What can the RAVE system help parents do?AImprove babies health condition.BTake good care of babies.CDevelop babies language skills.DKeep babies company.C解析:细节理解题。根据第一段第一句可知,专家认为教孩子语言技能的最佳时间是孩子的婴儿时期;结合第一段尾句“Now, an adorable blueeyed robot, a human avatar, and some hightech neuroscience may be able to assist parents with this important developmental task.” 以及第二段中的“The Robot.a team of researchers”可知,RAVE系统可以帮助父母完成教婴儿学习语言的任务,故C项正确。9What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?AHow babies learn ASL effectively.BHow parents educate their babies.CHow robots talk and read to babies.DHow the RAVE system works.D解析:段落大意题。 10What indicates babies are learning with the help of the RAVE system?AInterest in videos and TV shows.BChanges in their body temperature.CImprovement in their natural language.DHand movements in a rhythm like ASL.D解析:细节理解题。 11What do the researchers think of the RAVE system?APromising. BImpractical.CSatisfactory. DDisappointing.A解析:观点态度题。 D(2019重庆调研抽测)As the world becomes more connected, the number of people living outside their home country is on the rise. To find out what makes expats(移民) happy in their new hometown, the global community network InterNations recently conducted their annual Expat Insider survey. In Malta, warm weather and nearness to Europe are the big draws for this Mediterranean nation. The climate leads to a slower pace of life.“Some shops have a siesta early in the afternoon, and many people notice slow service at the restaurants,” said an InterNations Consul from Rome. “I remember sitting at a table around 8 pm. once and leaving at midnight! We only had a starter and one main.”In Ecuador, friendly people, affordable healthcare and tasty, cheap food are just a few reasons as to why expats love living in Ecuador. Plus, the countrys diverse cities give expats a lot of choices.“The beauty of Ecuador is the variety,” said an InterNations ambassador. “The people who come to retire in Ecuador often look for a lower cost of living, so the coastline, the southern part of Ecuador and Ambato will fit this type of expat. In the case of businessminded or outgoing expats, Quito, Guayaquil and Cuenca are the cities to live in.” The bigger cities do come at a cost, he warned, with higher prices for rent and eating out.In New Zealand, the countrys natural beauty draws people from across the world, and with easy access to both cities and beaches, expats usually adopt the local relaxed lifestyle. An InterNations Ambassador from Hong Kong notes that a typical Kiwi works 8:30 am. to 5 pm., never overtime, and enjoys meals and weekend activities, like house parties, road trips or hiking, with their family.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文。 12What is InterNations survey for?ATo study why the number of expats is on the rise.BTo make clear what the exact number of expats is.CTo look into how expats adopted their new hometown.DTo discover what pleases expats in their adopted countries.D解析:细节理解题。 D。13What does the underlined word “siesta” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?ASale.
