Family vacations are cherished memories. Keeping children entertained on the road or during a flight, however, can be challenging. The best way to cut down on anxiety? Plan ahead.Avoid giving children snacks that contain sugar and caffeine. Sweet treats keep them happy and quiet for five minutes, as it fills them with unusable energy that will turn into crankiness (偏执) when the sugar wears off. Bring fun, small snacks like flavored baked chips, apple sauce, raisins, and granola barsand top it off with a little protein like cheese sticks to keep the blood sugar levels nice and steady.Bring plenty of plastic or paper bags. This is the perfect time to put those spare bags around the house to use. Store them in your purse or pocket, as well as in the car. This is a quick solution for garbage, diaper wrapping or motion sickness.Avoid extra costs on bulk items you will need during the trip. When flying, purchase bulk items like diapers, formula, and wipes at your destination. In the past, it was convenient and free to check these items. Now, each checked luggage item costs $25 or more on average. When driving, do the opposite; take your bulk items to avoid extra trips to the store when you arrive, which can help you avoid impulse travel purchases.Bring a full change of clothing for each child. Keep these items within fairly easy reach. When a spill or mess happens, this will help parents avoid unexpected (and unbudgeted) clothing purchases.Travel planning can help make family vacations what they are supposed to be: Fun! What are some of your favorite strategies for saving time and stress while traveling with children?Which of the following can keep the blood sugar levels nice and steady?A. Coffee.B. Apple pie with sugar in it.C. Candies.D. Cheese sticks.22. Why should you bring plenty of plastic or paper bags during vacation?A. Because you can use them to keep garbage, vomit (呕吐物) and wrap diaper.B. Because they can prevent you from being stolen.C. Because big bags can hold more items, which brings you much convenience.D. Because they can save you $25.23. Which is the proper place for you to buy bulk items when driving?A. At the destination.B. At wherever you can buy cheaper ones.C. At the place you just go out of the things you need.D. In the stores near your house.24. What should parents do to avoid unexpected clothing purchases during their vacation?A. Do not let children make their clothes dirty.B. Bring a full change of clothing for each child.C. Wash the dirty clothes frequently.D. Do not allow children eat during their vacation.BWhat if we could replace oil with a fuel which produced no pollution and which everybody had equal access to? The good news is that we can, in fact, we are swimming in it -literally.Hydrogen is one of the building blocks of the universe. Our own sun is basically, a big, dense cloud of the stuff. And hydrogen can be used to create electricity for power, heat and light. The problem is that hydrogen is everywhere and nowhere at the same time. It does not exist as a material on its own, but is always part of something else. So it has to be separated before it can be used. Most commercial hydrogen in use now is created from natural gas. As oil will start to run out in around the year 2030. It makes sense to produce as much hydrogen as possible as soon as we can. But natural gas supplies will also begin to run out soon after. Another source is needed.Researchers are now using electricity to make water into hydrogen. Companies are working on the problem in their own areas. The first commercial hydrogen fuel cells for computers and mobile phones have already come on to the market Auto companies have also invested over US $ 2 billion in the production of hydrogen fuelled cars. The nations of a hydrogen fuelled planet would not fight over energy recourses. There would be a great reduction inpollution, the only by-product of creating hydrogen is pure drinking water something that is very scarce in many parts of the world. But that is not where the good news ends, once the costs of producing hydrogen have been brought down, it will possibly provide power for a third of the Earths population that has no electricity. And electricity creates wealth. In South Africa over the last decade there has been a large programme of electrification. Thanks to the programme, people do not have to spend their days looking firewood to burn for heat And with electric light, they can work long into the nightSome scientists see radical changes in the way the human race co-operates. Hydrogen creates electricity, and is also created by it. With dual use fuel cells, everyone who consumes energy could also produce it. Late at night, a man drives home in London and connects his car into the worldwide hydrogen web”,which it supplies with electricity. A few hours later, a man in Beijing uses that electricity to power the hydrogen cell in his car. Hydrogen could be the first democratic energy source.Like all dreams of the future, it seems very far away. But the threat of war and terrorism in the Middle East has made governments and businesses more aware of the need to end oil dependency and spend more time and money on hydrogen resource. So maybe the threat of war is not a completely bad thing for the future of the human race.25. What is the problem with using hydrogen as energy?A. It has by-products.B. It has to be separated from other materials.C. It will make energy too cheap.D. It is too far away from us.26. Why does the author give the example in the last but one paragraph?A. To tell us that we produce energy while using hydrogen power.B. To tell us that hydrogen power does not produce pollu-tioaC. To show hydrogen power can stop war.D. To show hydrogen power is cheap.27. What is the authors attitude about the future?A. Skeptical. B. Negative.C. Indifferent. D. Positive.28. What is the passage mainly about?A. War and energy.B. The future of hydrogen as an energy resource.C. The disadvantages of oil.D. How to end war.CMany non-edible (不能吃的),poisonous or otherwise not pleasant-tasting butterflies have distinct colors and patterns. As a result, other more palatable (可口的)butterflies have evolved to mimic (模仿)those patterns to avoid being consumed by predators. There are several types of mimicry in butterflies:Batesian mimicry, Mllerian mimicry, wasp (黄蜂)mimicry and tiger complex mimicry. Birds will consume unpalatable butterflies and associate their colors and patterns with the negative experience, thus avoiding the butterflies performing mimicry. It is possible that birds even communicate their experience with other birds.Batesian mimicry was established by the naturalist Henry Walter Bates in 1862. He first observed that mimicry involved a palatable butterfly resembling an unpalatable, often toxic (有毒的),butterfly. This mimicry will only work when the toxic model species outnumbers the non-toxic species. He believed that mimicry was the result of edible butterflies producing mutations (突变)making them resemble their inedible cousins. This in turn resulted in the increased survival of the butterflies containing the mutation and resulted in the similarities between species. In 1879 another naturalist , Johann Friedrich Theodor Mller, observed that in some cases of mimicry both the mimic and the model are unpalatable. He considered this to be a cooperative mimicry and believed the species evolved side by side in a mutually beneficial relationship. If a bird tried to eat a member of either species, it would then avoid both. Wasp mimicry is similar to Batesian mimicry, but instead of mimicking another unpalatable butterfly species, the mimic resembles a wasp to avoid predators. The tiger complex is a group of around 200 species of neotropical butterflies that are involved in the most well-known form of mimicry. It is named such because the patterns of all of the included species are black on a background of either orange or yellow, resembling a tiger. In the complex are many unpalatable species, a few toxic species and a large number of completely edible species. Members of thetiger complex are all known for congregating (集合)in large groups that would normally be easy food for birds. Fortunately, birds have no interest in them due to their mimicry.29. Batesian mimicry only works when_.A. mutations are produced in non-toxic butterfliesB. there are more non-toxic butterflies than toxic onesC. non-toxic butterflies hide among toxic onesD. there are more toxic butterflies than non-toxic ones30. Which of the following descriptions suits Mllerian mimicry?A. A palatable butterfly and a toxic one mimic each other.B. An unpalatable butterfly mimics a palatable one.C. Unpalatable butterflies mimic other unpalatable ones.D. A palatable butterfly mimics a toxic one.31. Birds have no interest in the tiger complex because_.A. butterflies in the complex are mostly unpalatableB. birds can be eaten by the large group insteadC. butterflies make good use of mimicryD. birds like the individual butterfly more32. What is the text mainly about?A. Surviving skills of butterflies.B. Mimicry in butterflies.C. Normal relations among butterflies.D. Butterflies and their predators.DFor high school leavers starting out in the working world,it is very important to learn particular skills and practice how to behave in an interview or how to find an internship (实习).In some countries, schools have programs to help students onto the path to work. In the United States, however, such programs are still few and far between.Research shows that if high schools provide career-related courses, students are likely to get higher earnings in later years. The students are more likely to stay in school, graduate and go on to higher education. In Germany, students as young as 13 and 14 are expected to do internships. German companies work with schools to make sure that young people get the education they need for future employment. But in America, education reform programs focus on how well students do in exams instead of bringing them into contact with the working world. Harvard Education school professor Robert Schwartz has criticized education reformers for trying to place all graduates directly on the four-year college track. Schwartz argued that this approach leaves the countrys most vulnerable (易受影响的)kids with no jobs and no skills.Schwartz believed that the best career programs encourage kids to go for higher education while also teaching them valuable practical skills at high school. James Madison High School in New York, for example, encourages students to choose classes on career-based courses. The school then helps them gain on-the-job experience in those fields while theyre still at high school. However, even for teens whose schools encourage them to connect with work, the job market is daunting. In the US,unemployment rates for 16-to 19-year-olds are above 20 percent for the third summer in a row.The risk is that if teenagers miss out on the Summer job experience, they become part of this generation of teens who had trouble in landing a job, said Michael, a researcher in the US.33. In the authors opinion, American high school leaversA.have enough career-related coursesB. need more career advice from their schoolsC.perform better in exams than German studentsD. can get higher earnings in later years34. According to Robert Schwartz, _,A. there is no need for kids to go for higher education in the USB. students should get contact with the working world at high schoolC. education reform should focus on students performance in examsD. teenagers in the US cant miss out on the summer job experience35. What can be inferred from the text?A. Unemployment rates for US teenagers remain high at the moment.B.Students with career-based courses never have problems finding a job.C. US companies work with schools to prepare young people for future employment.D. High school leavers with no practical skills cant find a job absolutely.第二节 共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Today we begin a series of programs about learning disabilities. These are disorders in the ways that people understand or use language. They can affect the ability to listen or think, or to speak or to read and write. They can also affect the ability to do mathematics. 36 Researchers believe that learning disabilities are caused by differences in the way that the brain works with information. They say children with learning disabilities are not unintelligent or do not want to work. 37 Researchers say that as many as one out of every five people in the United States has some kind of learning disability. Almost three-million children in the United States receive some kind of help in school for a learning disability. 38 Experts look for a difference between how well a child does in school and the level of intelligence or ability of the child. But there is no one sign of a disorder. A few signs of learning disability include not connecting letters with their sounds or not understanding what is read. A person with a learning disability may not be able to understand a funny story. They may not follow directions. They may not read numbers correctly or know how to start a task. 39 One person may have trouble understanding mathematics. Another may have difficulty understanding what people are saying. Still another may not be able to express ideas in writing. These different kinds of learning disabilities are known by different names. For example, a person who has difficulty reading may have dyslexia (诵读困难症).Experts say learning disabilities cannot be cured. 40 Teachers and parents can help young people with learning disabilities to learn successfully.A. Different people have different kinds of learning disabilities.B. Their brains just process information differently than other people.C. People with learning disabilities have difficulty in communicating with others.D. But people who have them can be helped.E. Why does a person have a learning disability?F.
