If you are not sure, You Are Smarter Than You Think by an American teacher Thomas Armstrong will tell you: you are smart in some way.To show this, Thomas tells the story of his life. When he was little, he did badly at school and was sent down a year. But later on, he found he was good at writing. He worked hard and became a writer and teacher.Being smart does not just mean being good at school tests. There are many other ways to be smart. Thomas Armstrong says there are different types of intelligence: music, sports, space, getting on with people, being able to understand yourself, and being good at natural history.Every child has any one of these intelligences. The point is how to find them and make use of them. Each child comes into the world with some talent(天赋). If the child is helped, he can do better in our world.Parents and teachers must help the child to keep those gifts. Thomas says a good way to build these intelligences at home or school is story-telling.If you want to be friendly with other people, you can prepare a story and put on a play before other people. It is the same with musical intelligence, since you can make the lyrics (歌词) of a song!If you want to know more about ways to be smart, write to You Are Smarter Than You Think .21. No pains, no gainsC. You can all be clever kids D. One is not too old to learnB Fashion refers to the styles of dress that are currently popular. Fashion goes beyond just clothes, though. Its important for some people to wear only the latest fashions and styles. For others, though, keeping up with trends (潮流) isnt that important. The one thing that stays the same with fashion is this: it always changes! In the 1960s and 1970s, hippies(嬉皮士) made bell-bottomed blue jeans popular. In the 1980s, Michael Jackson made parachute pants all the fashion. Now try to find these items in todays clothing stores! Why do fashions change? The answer is probably as simple as the fact that people change. Over time, the new replaces the old. People are influenced greatly by popular culture, including athletes, musicians, movie stars, as well as popular films, televisions shows, books and music. We are also influenced by the fashion industrys advertising. The stars of popular culture are always searching for a new angle to maintain (保持) their popularity. Often these new angles come in the form of new clothing or hairstyles. When people see these new styles, they often want to imitate their favorite stars. To do so, they seek out the latest fashions to make themselves look like the people they want to imitate. In this way, fashions evolve and change over time. For years, clothes have been used to separate people into groups. Even today, brand-name clothing that is more expensive than other types of clothing can be used by some people to distinguish themselves from others. Unfortunately, this can often have the effect of distancing certain groups from others. Dont forget that its always OK to develop your own sense of style that is unique and separate from what the fashion world determines! Stay true to yourself and let your personality not your clothes speak for who you are.25 The examples of bell-bottomed blue jeans and parachute pants in Paragraph 3 are used to show that _.A. people often have different dressing stylesB. trends of fashion are changing all the timeC. people are always affected greatly by the starsD. hippies and Michael Jackson are good designers26Fashion change mainly because _.A. new films and shows replace the oldB. movie stars are changing over timeC. popular culture influences peopleD. advertisements change rapidly27 We can learn from the text that _.A. clothes may separate and distance peopleB. people like imitating others dressing styleC. the author has clearly gone out of fashionD. fashion is all about clothes people wear28 In the last paragraph, the author mainly wants to stress _.A. the advantages of staying unique and separateB. the bad effects of following fashions and stylesC. the good benefits of popular styles to peopleD. the importance of having ones own personalityC In the fall of 1985, I was a bright-eyed girl heading off to Howard University, aiming at a legal career and dreaming of sitting on a Supreme Court bench somewhere. Twenty-one years later I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different tale to tell. My grandma, an amazing woman, graduated from college at the age of 65. She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year after I started college, she developed cancer. I made the choice to withdraw from college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait. Then I got married with another dream: building my family with a combination of adopt and biological children. In 1999, we adopted our first son. To lay eyes on him was fantastic-and very emotional. A year later came our second adopted boy. Then followed son No. 3. In 2003, I gave birth to another boy. You can imagine how fully occupied I became, raising four boys under the age of 18. Our home was a complete zoo-a joyous zoo. Not surprising, I never did make it back to college full-time. But I never gave up on the dream either. I had only one choice: to find a way. That meant talking as few as one class each semester. The hardest part was feeling guilty about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to quit, but I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives. In 2007, I graduated from the University of North Carolina. It took me over 21 years to get my college degree! I am not special, just single-minded. It always struck me that when youre looking at a big challenge from the outside, it looks huge, but when youre in the midst of it, it just seems normal. Everything you want wont arrive in your life on one day. Its a process. Remember:little steps add up to big dreams.29When the author went to Howard University, her dream was to be _.A. a writer B. a teacher C. a judge D. a doctor30Why did the author quit school in her second year of college?A. She wanted to study by herself.B. She fell in love and got married.C. She suffered from a serious illness.D. She decided to look after her grandma.31Which of the following can best describe the author ?A. Caring and determined.B. Honest and responsible.C. Ambitious and sensitive.D. Innocent and single-minded.D Asia has long tradition of tea-drinking. And China is no exception. However, lately more and more Chinese people are turning to a different drink. Coffee has become an increasingly popular choice of Chinese people living abroad and in the countrys huge cities. It is also a popular crop among those living in the mountains of southern Yunnan Province. In big cities such as Beijing, coffee shops seem to be on nearly every major street corner. These shops are not just selling drinks from Starbucks, the world-famous coffee company. Coffee businesses from South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Britain are also operating in China. Tea-drinking is steeped in the culture and traditions of many countries, like China and Japan. But is that changing? Are young people from Asia now choosing a cup of coffee instead of tea? Beibei Su is from China. She has been living in the United States for the past eight years. Before that, she lived in Italy for two years. Ms. Su says she likes tea better than coffee. But she adds that may not be true among the young generation in China. Many young Chinese people drink coffee socially -when meeting with friends. Yang Lin lives in the U.S. but comes from an area in China famous for growing tea. She used to only drink tea while in China. But now, she says, she drinks both and for different reasons. Yang Lin says that drinking coffee for her is a social event. She and her co-workers like to sit in a cafe and talk over a cup of coffee. Voyo is another Chinese woman who now lives in Washington, D.C. She says that after moving to the U.S. her tastes changed. We would call her a coffee convert, someone who now chooses to drink coffee. With more people drinking coffee, many see an economic opportunity for Chinese -grown beans. China-grown coffee could be a money- maker even if most of the coffee on sale in China is imported.32What does the author mainly introduce?A. Chinese people have long tradition of tea-drinking.B. More and more Chinese are choosing coffee to drinkC. People in big cities like drinking coffee better than tea.D. More Asian people are turning to different drinks.33The underlined word “convert” in paragraph 6 means _.A. A person who has changed to drink coffee.B. A person who has changed to drink tea.C. A person who has changed to grow tea.D. A person who has changed to grow coffee.34Why does Yang Lin drink coffee?A. Because she lives in the U.S. now.B. Because she can talk with friends.C. Because she has drunk tea so long.D. Because her tastes has changed.35From the last paragraph, we can infer that _A. less and less coffee will be imported in China in the future.B. the China-grown coffee beans will be sold to the world soon.C. the need of coffee will offer more chances to make money.D. Chinese economy will depend on coffee beans in the future.第二节 (共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。 选项中有两项为多余选项。 Health is the most important thing in the world.
