They usually think everyone in Britain speaks standard British English. This isnt true. People in different areas of Britain may speak English quite differently. Today Ill tell you something about Cockney English. The term “Cockney” refers to both the accent and the people who speak it. It was first used to refer to a weak townsman in the face of a weaker countryman. By the 17th century the term had come to mean a Londoner. Todays natives of London, especially those in its East End, use the term with respect and pride.London is the capital of England. It sits on the River Thames, about 50 miles north of the English Channel, in the southeastern part of the country. It is usually agreed that to be a true Cockney, a person has to be born within hearing distance of the bells of St. Mary-le-Bow, Cheapside, in the city of London. This traditional working-class accent of the area is also linked with other suburbs (郊区) in the eastern part of the city, such as the East End, Stepney, Hackney, Shoreditch and Bow.The Cockney accent is considered one of the broadest of the British accents. The area and its colorful characters and accents have often become the basis (基础)for British “soap operas” and other television specials. EastEnders made by the BBC can help people know about this accent and the people who speak it.Here are some features of this accent:It is widely agreed that the vowels (元音)of “mouth” can help tell the difference between true Cockney and other accents. Cockney usage includes the monophthongization (单元音化)of the word “mouth”. Example: mouth = /m / rather than /mau /.In the common accents throughout England, h at the beginning of certain words is dropped often, but its certainly dropped more in Cockney. Examples: house =ouse; hammer = ammer.Another very well-known feature of Cockney is “th” fronting, which is replaced by “f”. Examples: thin - fin; three = free.8.The underlined word “This” in Paragraph 1 refers to the fact that _.A. many accents are being heard in BritainB. there are many different accents in BritainC.many people study English as a foreign languageD.everyone in Britain speaks standard British English9.What does the term “Cockney” make natives of London feel?A. With debts (债务)of at least 30,000 at the end of it, many students have to consider university as a long-term investment (投资). Not only this, but upon graduation, students face a fierce job market, which can be the reasons for them choosing a degree (学位)that will make sure of a step on the career path.I feel strongly that having a degree in a subject you are interested in is much more worthwhile (值得的). Steve Jobs once said, “There is no reason not to follow your heart.” This can be shown when you choose your degree. If you choose a subject you are interested in, you are more likely to work harder, complete tasks on time, and possibly leave university with a higher degree, all due to the fact that you love your subject.Lauren Edwards, an undergraduate student, says that it is wise to do something you love in order to be successful at university. Actually, choosing a degree based on an interest will allow you to experience university life much more fully. Enjoying the schoolwork will provide you with more time to develop your personable skills and build your life experience. She reminds me that you can change your courses later if you feel unhappy.Bosses like the students with a rich resume filled with volunteering and work experiences, afire-class activities and leadership skills that a degree will not provide you with. Ideally, everyone wants a perfect balance a degree that will give you an enjoyable experience at university and help you land a good job after graduation. But its nearly impossible. At last, you should not depend on a degree to land you a job in your field. Following a subject you are interested in will improve your v academic abilities and give you the motivation (动力)to do well.Nobody wants the university time to be stagnant (停滞的);it should be an age of growth and development, and be achievable within the means of a subject you love.12.Its hard for a student to choose a subject because he or she _.A.has to consider both schooling costs and the jobB.must pay attention to both investment and studyC.must make sure he or she can graduate successfullyD.will have to decide whether to find a job or continue to study13.What can you do to end your wrong, decision on a subject?A.Leave university.B.Change your first decision.C.Enjoy the schoolwork.D.Change your courses after graduation.14.What does the underlined word “resume” mean in Paragraph 4?A.A written paper of personal details.B.A report about personal activities.C.A careful plan about the future.D.A degree report at university.15.What can be inferred from the passage?A.Hard work is necessary.B.Perfect balance is pleasant.C.Ones ability is the basic skill.D.Interest is the key to success.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。Taking notes is very important in high school.
