Emphasis will be placed on their relevance to second language acquisition. The current cognitive approach will be set against the traditional approach to linguistics.课程主要内容：Starting with an exploration of theories of first language acquisition, we move on to the nature of human language and examine it in relation to animal language. This will take us into the realm of sign language and to the discussion of very basic notions and concepts of linguistics. We shall also be looking at universal features of language. The way in which a language is acquired in a natural environment is compared with the way it is learned at a later age in a more artificial setting; this will be conducted in relation to neurolinguistic and psycholinguistic theory and in particular that relating to listening comprehension and word learning. This naturally takes us on to the study of the mental lexicon and of the way multimedia means can promote learning, in the areas of grammar, syntax, phonology and the lexicon.
