A sports magazine. B. A movie poster.C. A guidebook. D. A science report.BIt was once thought that air pollution affected only the area immediately around large cities with factories and heavy automobile traffic. Today, we know that although these are the areas with the worst air pollution, the problem is actually worldwide. On several occasions over the past decade, a heavy cloud of air pollution has covered the entire eastern half of the United States and led to health warnings even in rural areas away from any major concentration of manufacturing and automobile traffic. In fact, the very climate of the entire earth may be affected by air pollution. Some scientists feel that the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the air resulting from the burning of fossil fuels(coal and oil)is creating a “greenhouse effect”holding in heat reflected from the earth and raising the worlds average temperature. If this view is correct and the worlds temperature is raised only a few degrees, much of the polar ice cap will melt and cities such as New York, Boston, Miami, and New Orleans will be under water. Another view, less widely held, is that increasing particulate(微粒、颗粒)matter in the atmosphere is blocking sunlight and lowering the earths temperature a result that would be equally disastrous. A drop of just a few degrees could create something close to new ice age and would make agriculture difficult or impossible in many of our top farming areas. At present we do not know for sure that either of these conditions will happen(though one recent government report prepared by experts in the field concluded that the greenhouse effect is very likely). Perhaps, if we are very lucky, the two tendencies will offset each other and the worlds temperature will stay about the same as it is now. 25. As pointed out at the beginning of the passage, people used to think that air pollution. A. existed merely in urban and industrial areasB. affected the entire eastern half of the United StatesC. had damaging effects on healthD. caused widespread damage in the countryside26. As far as the greenhouse effect is concerned, the author. A. shares the same view with the scientistsB. rejects it as being ungroundedC. is uncertain of its occurrenceD. thinks that it will destroy the world soon27. This passage is mainly concerned with. A. the greenhouse effectB. the burning of fossil fuelsC. the likelihood (可能性) of a new ice ageD. the potential effect of air pollution CIf there is one thing Im sure about, it is that in a hundred years from now we will still be reading newspapers. It is not that newspapers are a necessity. Even now some people get most of their news from television or radio or the Internet. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people reading a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation. The nature of what is news may change. What basically makes news is what affects our livesthe big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same. I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. Its already happening in areas that may directly affect our lives, like genetic engineering. In the future, I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we doas we develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are. Its quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted (传送) electronically from Fleet Street and printed out in our own home. In fact, Im pretty sure how it will happen in the future. You will probably be able to choose from a menu, making up your own newspaper by picking out the things you want to readsports and international news, etc.I think people have got it wrong when they talk about competition between the different media. They actually feed off each other. Some people once foresaw that television would kill off newspapers, but that hasnt happened. What is read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures on a screen or sound lost in the air. And as for the Internet, its never really pleasant to read something just on a screen. 28. What is the best title for the passage?A. The Best Way to Get NewsB. The Future of NewspaperC. Make Your Own NewspaperD. The Changes of Media 29. In the writers opinion, in the future, _.A. newspapers will cover more scientific researchB. newspapers will not be printed in the publishing houses any longerC. more and more people will watch TV D. more big political affairs, wars and disasters will make news30. What will probably be on in the newspaper made by yourself?A. Sports and international news.B. A menu of important news.C. The most important news.D. What you are interested in.31. The phrase “feed off” in the last paragraph means_.A. match with B. depend onC. fight with D. kill offDYou probably know who Marie Curie was, but you may not have heard of Rachel Carson. Rachel Carson(19071964)If it werent for Rachel Carson, the environmental movement might not exist today. Her popular 1962 book Silent Spring raised awareness of the dangers of pollution and the harmful effects of chemicals on humans and on the worlds lakes and oceans. Sandra Day OConnor(1930present)When Sandra Day OConnor finished third in her class at Stanford Law School, in 1952, she could not find work at a law firm because she was a woman. She became an Arizona state senator(参议员)and, in 1981, the first woman to join the U. S. Supreme Court. OConnor gave the deciding vote in many important cases during her 24 years on the top court. Rosa Parks(19132005)On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks would not give up her seat on a bus to a white passenger. Her simple act landed Parks in prison.
