Unit 9 Wheels(A)(35分钟).阅读理解A(2017全国卷)Terrafugia Inc.said Monday that its new flying car has completed its first flight, bringing the company closer to its goal of selling the flying car within the next year. The vehicle named the Transition has two seats, four wheels and wings that fold up so it can be driven like a car.The Transition, which flew at 1,400 feet for eight minutes last month, can reach around 70 miles per hour on the road and 115 in the air.It flies using a 23-gallon tank of gas and burns 5 gallons per hour in the air.On the ground,it gets 35 miles per gallon.Around 100 people have already put down a $10,000 deposit to get a Transition when they go on sale, and those numbers will likely rise after Terrafugia introduces the Transition to the public later this week at the New York Auto Show. But dont expect it to show up in too many driveways. Its expected to cost $279,000.And it wont help if youre stuck in traffic. The car needs a runway.Inventors have been trying to make flying cars since the 1930s,according to Robert Mann,an airline industry expert. But Mann thinks Terrafugia has come closer than anyone to making the flying car a reality. The government has already permitted the company to use special materials to make it easier for the vehicle to fly.The Transition is now going through crash tests to make sure it meets federal safety standards.Mann said Terrafugia was helped by the Federal Aviation Administrations decision five years ago to create a separate set of standards for light sport aircraft, which are lower than those for pilots of larger planes.Terrafugia says an owner would need to pass a test and complete 20 hours of flying time to be able to fly the Transition,a requirement pilots would find relatively easy to meet.1.What is the first paragraph mainly about?A.The basic data of the Transition.B.The advantages of flying cars.C.The potential market for flying cars.D.The designers of the Transition.2.Why is the Transition unlikely to show up in too many driveways?A.It causes traffic jams.B.It is difficult to operate.C.It is very expensive.D.It burns too much fuel.3.What is the governments attitude to the development of the flying car?A.Cautious.B.Favorable.C.Ambiguous.D.Disapproving.4.What is the best title for the text?A.Flying Car at Auto ShowB.The Transitions First FlightC.Pilots Dream Coming TrueD.Flying Car Closer to RealityBForget Cyclists,Pedestrians Are Real DangerWe are having a debate about this topic. Here are some letters from our readers.Yes,many cyclists behave dangerously. Many drivers are disrespectful of cyclists. But pedestrians are probably the worse offenders.People of all ages happily walk along the pavement with eyes and hands glued to the mobile phone, quite unaware of what is going on around them. They may even do the same thing while crossing a road at a pedestrian crossing or elsewhere. The rest of us have to evade(避让) them or just stand still to wait for the unavoidable collision. The real problem is that some pedestrians seem to be,at least for the moment,in worlds of their own that are,to them, much more important than the welfare of others.Michael HoranI loved the letter from Bob Brooks about cyclists(Viewpoints,May 29).I am afraid they seem to think they own the roads.I was walking across Altrincham Road one morning when a cyclist went round me and on being asked what he was doing he shouted at me.The government built a cycle lane on the road but it is hardly used. The police do nothing. What a laugh they are!The cyclists should all have to be made to use the cycle lanes and wear helmets, fluorescent(发荧光的) jackets and lights at night and in the morning. They should pay some sort of tax and be fined for not wearing them.Carol HarveyCyclists jump on and off pavements(which are meant for pedestrians),ride at speed along the pavements, and think they have a special right to go through traffic lights when they are on red.I was almost knocked down recently by a cyclist riding on the pavement when there was a cycle lane right next to him.Other road users, including horse riders, manage to obey the rules so why not cyclists? Its about time they had to be registered and insured,so when they do hit a pedestrian or a vehicle,or cause an accident,at least they can be traced and there might be an opportunity to claim.JMLWrite to Viewpoints of the newspaper.5.Michael Horan wrote the letter mainly to show that .A.drivers should be polite to cyclistsB.road accidents can actually be avoidedC.some pedestrians are a threat to road safetyD.walking while using phones hurts ones eyes6.Carol Harvey suggests that cyclists should .A.be provided with enough roadsB.be asked to ride on their own lanesC.be made to pay less tax for cyclingD.be fined for laughing at policemen7.What is a complaint of JML?A.Very few drivers are insured.B.Cyclists ride fast on pavements.C.Pedestrians go through red traffic lights.D.Horse riders disrespect other road users.8.The underlined word “they” in the third letter refers to .A.accidentsB.vehiclesC.pedestriansD.cyclists9.The three letters present viewpoints on .A.real sources of road dangersB.ways to improve road facilitiesC.measures to punish road offencesD.increased awareness of road rules.七选五根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。It is important to have good study habits.1 Here are a few tips to help many driveways. Its expected to cost $279,000.”可知,飞行汽车the Transition价格昂贵,买家不多,路上少见。因此C项正确。3.B推理判断题。根据第三段的“The government has already permitted the company to use special materials to make it easier for the vehicle to fly.”可知,政府对此项目给予支持,持赞同的态度,故B项正确。cautious“谨慎的”;favorable“赞同的”;ambiguous“模棱两可的”;disapproving“不赞同的”。
