But after a fight with his dad, he was “tossed out” on the street. Eventually, his grandmother took him in for a while, but with her working during the day, Omorogbe needed to care for his seriously ill grandfather. School eventually became too much, so he dropped out.For many students across the country, circumstances like Omorogbes can derail (使偏离轨道) them the highschooltocollege track. In his case, Boston Public Schools ReEngagement Center was able to connect him with EDCO Youth Alternative, a school that provides extra support to nontraditional and struggling students. He started in September 2016 and will have his diploma in hand by May.“I have my counselor (指导教师) who calls me every day. If I miss school for two or three days, shell call me, and ask, Are you OK? ” says Omorogbe. “During the vacations, shell call me; for my birthday, shell bake me a cake.”Ten years ago, Boston high school students like Omorogbe were far less likely to get their diploma. In 2007, the citys graduation rate was 59 percent. This year, in 2017, the number of Boston students who graduated in four years hit a record high of 72.4 percent. Statewide, the graduation rate inched up to a record 87.5 percent from 87.3 percent last year, according to state figures.“Youre seeing gradual progress,” says Paul Reville, a professor at Harvards Graduate School of Education and former Secretary of education for Massachusetts. “Were dealing with one of the most important problems that we have in education these days, which is people dropping out without a high school education and having no place to go in our economy.”Education experts say Bostons record graduation rate was particularly encouraging because of the gains by the citys AfricanAmerican and Latino students in the last decade 13.6 and 16.5 percentage points respectively. But with roughly 5,500 kids across the state still dropping out of high school every year, professor Reville and others admit that Massachusetts, widely recognized as having the nations leading education system, still has a long way to go.21.Why did Omorogbe drop out of school?A. Surprisingly, even scientists havent given much attention to giraffes. We are learning more about their ecology, but what we know is still way behind what we know about other species. “Its a silent extinction,” said Dr. Julian Hennessy, a wildlife scientist.“The main reason for the smaller number of giraffes is their loss of living places,” said Hennessy, “as an increasing part of land is used for farming. But hunting also has a big influence.” You might wonder why hunters would focus on giraffes. First of all, once a giraffe is brought down, there is lots of meat with a small amount of effort. Besides, there is another thing encouraging the hunting. In Tanzania, Hennessy says, the latest word on the street is that eating giraffe meat could cure AIDS. Fresh giraffe heads and bones can be sold at prices of up to $140 per piece.Another widespread misconception about giraffes is that they are everywhere. Look at kids books which are full of giraffes. They are always in zoo collections. They can be seen easily, so you dont think we have to worry about them. But the truth is that they are in danger of extinction. There is a lack of right and true data.Hennessy and other researchers are now pulling together the data needed to improve the situation of the entire giraffe species and all nine subspecies (亚种). The information will be used to change the giraffes listing on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List, which now lists the species as of “least concern” but two subspecies as “endangered”. “Its a lot of work to gather the necessary information,” Hennessy says. “And several other giraffe subspecies will be recommended for endangered listings next year or the year after.” He hopes that the world will finally start to take notice of how endangered these beloved animals have become.28.By saying “Its a silent extinction”, Hennessy tells us that _.A. giraffes are unpopular in AfricaB. the giraffe is always silent in daily lifeC. the ecology of Africa needs more attentionD. the extinction occurs without enough attention29.What has caused the high price of giraffe meat in Tanzania?A. The countrys custom. B. The illegal international trade.C. The cost of hunting a giraffe. D. The idea that its a cure for AIDS.30.The misconception in Para. 3 can be corrected by _.A. preventing illegal hunting in AfricaB. rewriting kids books about giraffesC. providing reliable data about giraffesD. spreading scientific knowledge of AIDS31.The final purpose of Hennessys great effort is to _.A. collect more information about giraffesB. raise public awareness of protecting giraffesC. prove giraffes will disappear in the next few yearsD. work with the International Union for Conservation of NatureDA bargain is something offered at a low and advantageous price. A more recent definition is: a bargain is a dirty trick to force money out of the pockets of silly and innocent people. The cost of producing a new for example toothpaste would make 80p the proper price for it, so we will market it at 1.20. It is not a bad toothpaste, and as people like to try new things it will sell well to start with; but the attraction ofnoveltysoon fades, so sales will fall. When that happens we will reduce the price to 1.15. And we will turn it into a bargain by printing 5p OFF all over it.Sometimes it is not 5p OFF but 1p OFF. What breathtaking rudeness to advertise 1p OFF your soap or washing powder or whatever! Even the poorest oldage pensioner ought to regard this as an insult(侮辱), but he doesnt. A bargain must not be missed. People say one has to have washing powder (or whatever) and one might as well buy it a penny cheaper. The real danger starts when unnecessary things become bargains. Many people just cannot resist bargains. Provided they think they are getting a bargain they will buy clothes they will never wear or furniture they have no space for. Once I heard of a man who bought an electric saw as a bargain and cut off two of his fingers the next day. But he had no regrets: the saw had been truly cheap.Quite a few people actually believe that they make money on such bargains. A lady once told me: “Ive had a lucky day today. I bought a dress for 120, reduced from 400; and I bought a beautiful Persian carpet for 600, reduced from 900.” It will never occur to her that she has actually wasted 720. She feels as though she had made 580. She also feels, I am sure, that if she had more time for shopping, she could make a living out of it.Some people buy in large quantities because it is cheaper. Once a couple bought enough sugar for their lifetime and the lifetime of their children and grandchildren. They thought it a bargain not to be missed. When the sugar arrived they didnt know where to store it until they realized that their toilet was a very spacious one. So that was where they piled up their sugar. Not only did their guests feel rather strange whenever they were offered sugar to put into their coffee, but the toilet became extremely sticky. To offer bargains is a commercial trick to make the poor poorer. When greedy fools fall for this trick, it serves them right.32.Which word best describes the language style of the passage?A. Polite. B. Foolish. C. Humorous. D. Serious.33.What does the underlined word “novelty” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?A. Good quality. B. Low price.C. Newness. D. Curiosity.34.How does the author feel about 1p OFF a product?A. Its a gift for poor people.B. Its an offense to shoppers.C. Its a bargain worth trying.D. Its a real reduction in price.35.Which statement will the author probably agree with?A. Bargains are things people dont really need.B. Bargains are often real cheap products.C. Bargains help people make a living.D. Bargains play tricks on people.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。Living abroad will make you a different person and it will change you forever in a good way.
