The singular form of “dishes” is “dish.” So, to make this word plural, you add es, not just s. Explain that there are other words like this in English. Write “box,” “class,” “glass,” “bus” and “dress” on the blackboard. What is similar about these words? (They end in x, s or sh.) If you try to make them plural by just adding s, they are hard to pronounce! (How do you say glasses or boxes?!) In English, its easier to say es than s at the end of these words. Demonstrate by adding es and then saying: dishes, boxes, classes, glasses, buses, dresses.USE THE STUDENT BOOK AND AUDIOTAPEPRACTICEPlay “Tic-Tac-Toe” to practice regular and irregular plurals. Before the students write on the grid, they must say and write the correct plural for nouns I call out.
