CIn many small Indian villages, water, and the scarcity of it, has a direct connection to the life of females.Faculty of Communication and Culture professor Aradhana Parmar explores this connection in her research, which sees her travel throughout the small villages in the Rajasthan province in India. “We think of water as a necessity for drinking and for agriculture, but we dont think of it as a womens issue,” says Parmar. “In Rajasthan, water is connected to womens lives.”Modernized methods of collecting water meant the construction of large dams, which consumed local well water and made for a long journey for women who collect water for desert villages. The result had a deep influence on womens lives. Daughters were forced to give up their education in favor of managing the family household in the absence of their mothers, who committed up to six hours daily to the task of collecting and transporting water. The result is that the level of literacy among women in this region is now the lowest in the country.Faced with a water crisis(危机), the province enlisted the help of local non-government organizations (NGOs) to use ancient knowledge of rain water harvesting. The 5,000-year-old practice involves building complex pondscalled johadsusing mud and clay (粘土) to catch rain where it falls, clean and store it.Parmar and two undergraduate students in development studies are spending the winter in India analyzing the influence traditional rain water harvesting has on womens lives. In addition to providing her students experience for their future work with NGOs upon graduation, her findings have implications for water scarcity worldwide. “In this age of water shortage, rain water harvesting can help everyone. It is an international issue of survival.”28. What makes Parmar think water has a lot to do with womens life?A. Culture differences.B. Connection to researches.C. Experience of water scarcity.D. His father helped him across his legs and sit with his back straight. Once the child grasped his crossed ankles, the father had him rock backwards until his back was flat on the floor. At that point the father asked the child to try to sit back again. The boy struggled and tried without success. With a lift from dad the child was brought up to a sitting posture(姿势).The father then asked the child to rock back five or six times until he was comfortable with the motion. Each time the father gently lifted the child again to the sitting position. Then the father asked the child to try to rock back and then lift himself back to an upright position. The first few attempts were unsuccessful. Sometimes he rolled to the side and other times he would simply struggle and let go of his ankles. On two occasions he lifted himself by pulling on his legs and lunging forward. After these awkward efforts the father asked the child to think about a large ball resting inside his pelvis(骨盆). The father said the ball would make the rocking easier if the boy could visualize it being there. He was told to close his eyes and imagine his hips and tummy were inside this “rocking” ball. The father then told the boy to wait until he really felt and saw the ball. When he was ready the father told him he should roll back and up again. With his eyes closed the child sat motionless for a moment. Then he tipped backward and rolled his back down onto the floor. In a single motion he rolled back up to the sitting postion. His eyes popped open in disbelief. But his wide grin made it clear that he knew something had worked.
