Mother hands me the grocery list and puts money in my pocket, hoping it will be enough. Sheshad a hard day, and I have had a hard week. Nothing out of the ordinary happens when I get to the store. I grab the bread, some milk, and other things on the list. As I turn to head out, I see a beautiful dress in the window. I turn away, bitter that I could never own such a dress. Outside, I cannot stop thinking about that pretty dress. Its not fair that I can never have what I want. I work so hard to help my family and yet I get nothing in return, just another list to do. In my anger, I fail to realize the apples are rolling across the road. Suddenly, I see a pair of hands, offering me an apple. Looking up, I see the tanned (晒黑的) face of this stranger. His clothes mismatched, borrowed or stolen. But his eyes are soft and kind. “Thanks,” I say. No other words are spoken as he continues to help me. I tell him “thank you”one more time and I am on my way because I have many other things to finish. Suddenly, he says, “Have a good day, maam. And then he gives me the biggest smile I have ever seen. Right then, he looks years younger and I feel a fool. Look at me, feeling sorry for myself because I dontget what I want! Do I not think others are in the same boat, or worse? There are worse things than not having a beautiful dress. My mother will hand me the list today. I will make the same journey and probably see something I want but cannot have. But before I start to feel sorry for myself, I will remember the kind stranger with the big smile, and I will grab the last item, and check out.21. North American lobsters (龙虾) have been found in the North Sea (between Great Britain and Northwest Europe) , far from their own habitat. The lobsters usually live along the eastern coast of Canada and the United States. It is impossible that the lobsters could have made the 5,600-kilometre journey on their own. They were probably brought to Britain and then got away from containers. Some of the lobsters that were caught had elastic bands (松紧带) holding their legs shut, like lobsters that are kept in containers in stores or restaurants. Many may have been “set free” from some ships passing through the area. Sometimes passengers order a live lobster from a tank in the dining room and then ask the waiter to throw it overboard instead of cooking it. According to official records, 26 North American lobsters have been caught in waters off Great Britain since 1988. However, it is believed many more have been found but not reported. It is against the law to let North American lobsters come into British waters. If they settle down in European waters, it would be bad for the local lobsters. The two live in the same place and eat the same food. But North American lobsters are larger, stronger and more aggressive than European lobsters, and they produce young more quickly. As a result, they could take food and space away from the local lobsters, and from other types of shellfish that live in the same area. These lobsters may also carry diseases that could harm the local lobsters. ”25. He worked as a waiter in a restaurant and his problem was acid reflux (胃酸倒流), a disease that influences as many as 40 percent of Americans, a marked increase in recent years. Reflux can lead to esophageal (食道的) cancer, which has increased by about 500 percent since the 1970s. The drugs we use to treat reflux dont always work and may even increase the risk of developing cancer when used long term. What is responsible for these worrying developments? For one, our poor diet, with its huge increases in the intake of sugar, fat, soft drinks, and unhealthy foods. But another important fact has been overlooked: dinnertime. Over the past twenty years, the time of my patients evening meals has become later and later. Dinner already pushed back by longer work hours is often further delayed by activities such as shopping and exercise. In my experience, the single most important treatment for reflux is to avoid late eating. A patient with reflux came to see me because her father and uncle died of esophageal cancer, and she was afraid of getting it too. Her nightly routine (常规) included a 9 p.m. dinner with at least two bottles of red wine. The reflux was serious, and changes were needed. She listened, then did not come back to see me for a year. “For the first two months, I just hated you,” she told me, “and for the next two months,I was having some trouble eating. I guessed I was going to die of esophageal cancer.” Then she added, “You know, we are the reason that its not so easy to get 6 p.m. reservations (预约) at the good restaurants anymore. To stop the increase in reflux disease, we have to stop eating at least three hours before bed. As for my waiter patient? I told him to eat dinner before 7 p.m. Within six weeks, his reflux was gone.28. The author writes the text to tell us .A. not to work late at night B. to avoid eating at restaurants C. unhealthy foods cause cancer D. the danger of eating late at nightD Nearly every driver has experienced that feeling of great tiredness, where it becomes almost impossible to stay awake at the wheel. 14-year-old Katherine Wu is too young to have experienced this situation firsthand. However she noticed how difficult it was for her dad to remain awake while driving back from their family vacations in Florida to their home in Maryland. Her mom had to talk to her dad all the way.So I created a tool that can be used instead of my mom talking to my dad to make sure he stays awake and is safe,” she says. Her invention ,“Drivers Companion”,can notice driver sleepiness and warn the driver if he or she is too tired to be on the road. The user wears a headset(耳机),which sends information about the driver s brain waves to a tiny computer. The computer can be placed in front of the driver. The system then gives warnings, if needed. As the driver becomes sleepier, red color will be shown to warn him or her. The driver will also hear messages warning him to get off the road. The machine can say, “Youre tired. Please take a break. After sending her invention to the 2014 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge, Wu was chosen as a finalist and was able to work with Dr. Jesse Miller, who is a product development specialist. “He helped me understand how important it is to make sure that my invention worked for the people who were using it and that it was user-friendly,” Wu says.As a young scientist, Wu has some advice for other students of her age: I would like to tell them that they should choose something theyre interested in. So theyll be willing to spend more time on it and enjoy working on it more. Also, when theres difficulty, they should just continue working hard because theyll get over it.32.
