But unlike human, plants can have their temperature taken from 3, 000 feet away straight up. A decade ago, adopting the infrared(红外线 )scanning technology developed for military purposes and other satellites, physicist Stephen Paley came up with a quick way to take the temperature of crops to determine which ones are under stress. The goal was to let farmers precisely target pesticide(杀虫剂)spraying rather than rain poison on a whole field, which invariably includes plants that dont have pest(害 虫)problems. Even better, Paleys Remote Scanning Services Company could detect crop problems before they became visible to the eye. Mounted on a plane flown at 3, 000 feet at night, an infrared scanner measured the heat emitted by crops. The data were transformed into a color-coded map showing where plants were running “fevers”. Farmers could then spot-spray, using 50 to 70 percent less pesticide than they otherwise would. The bad news is that Paleys company closed down in 1984, after only three years. Farmers resisted the new technology and long-term backers were hard to find. But with the renewed concern about pesticides on produce, and refinements in infrared scanning, Paley hopes to get back into operation. Agriculture experts have no doubt the technology works. “This technique can be used on 75 percent of agricultural land in the United States, ”says George Oerther of Texas A & M. Ray Jackson, who recently retired from the Department of Agriculture, thinks remote infrared crop scanning could be adopted by the end of the decade. But only if Paley finds the financial backing which he failed to obtain 10 years ago. 60. In order to apply pesticide spraying precisely, we can use infrared scanning to _ . A. estimate the damage to the crops B. measure the size of the affected area C. draw a color-coded map D. locate the problem areas 【解析】选D。 . . showing where plants were runningfevers. Farmers could then spot- spray,. . . ”说明目的是确定有问题的区域,以使农民有针对 性地喷杀虫剂。显然,选项D(确定有问题的地域)为最佳选项 。 61. Farmers can save a considerable amount of pesticide by _ . A. resorting to spot-spraying B. consulting infrared scanning experts C. transforming poisoned rain D. detecting crop problems at an early stage 【解析】选A。 依据文章第二自然段最后一句 “Farmers could then spot-spray, using 50 to 70 percent less pesticide than they otherwise would. ”(采取点喷,农民们可 以节省平时用量的50至70的杀虫剂),选项A符合题意。 62. The application of infrared scanning technology to agriculture met with some difficulties because of _ . A. the lack of official support B. its high cost C. the lack of financial support D. its failure to help increase production 【解析】选C。 依据文章第三自然段的第1句 “The bad news is that Paleys company closed down in 1984 ,after only three years. Farmers resisted the new technology and long-term backers were hard to find. ”,从中可以看出红 外线扫描技术应用于农业遇到了一些问题,原因有两个:一 是农民对新技术的抵制,二是难以找到长期赞助商。文章中 还有一处明显的提示出现在最后一句:“But only if Paley finds the financial backing which he failed to obtain 10 years ago”. 63. Infrared scanning technology may be brought back into operation because of _ . A. the desire of farmers to improve the quality of their produce B. growing concern about the excessive use of pesticides on crops C. the forceful promotion by the Department of Agriculture D. full support from agricultural experts 【解析】选B。 依据文章第三自然段第3句“But with the renewed concern about pesticides on produce, and refinements in infrared scanning,Paley hopes to get back into operation”,可知B项(出于对杀虫剂过度使用的担心)符 合题意。 (C) In Kenya, the biggest threat to the lions comes from increasing tension(紧张关系) with humans. Lions eat rural peoples cattle, costing them money. In turn, the people try to kill off entire lion groups. Less and less wildlife lives in the vast areas of Kenyan rangelands (牧地) that held so many lions 20 years ago. Large animals have been poisoned and the rangelands themselves have been destroyed by overgrazing So the decline of the big cats is due to the growth in human population and frequent conflict with people. Poaching also worsens the lions situation particularly in other parts of Africa where the big cats are less well-protected than they are in Kenya. Those who kill lions illegally are rarely punished. In the few cases of arrest (逮捕) for lion killing, the accused may be released by paying some money. Even the animal-welfare groups that seek to protect lions from hunters may place them at risk. Sport hunting is banned in Kenya, which has allowed lions to live better there than in most other parts of Africa, but the ban could also lead to their extinction. Under the present policy, there is no way for rural people to benefit from wildlife. They get no income from tourism, and the only potential source of wildlife income is prevented by the influence of American and British animal- rights supporters. Kenya is experiencing a very severe drought at the moment and this is driving other people into wildlife areas in search of grazing and water supplies. Across the continent, the future looks hopeless for lions. Only strict action in many aspectspolicy change, effective law enforcement (执行), giving rural people an economic aid, and a great deal of investmentwill prevent the loss of wildlife in Africa. 64. In Kenya, people are killing lions mainly in order to_ . A. ensure their personal safety B. earn more money by selling their bones C. protect their cattle against being eaten D. prevent rangelands from being destroyed 【解析】选C。 Lions eat rural peoples cattle, costing them money. In turn, the people try to kill off entire lion groups. 65. What does the underlined word“decline”in Para. 2 mean? A. disappearance B. action C. growth D. decrease 【解析】选D。 Less and less wildlife lives in. . . Large animals have been poisoned. . . 66. What measure has Kenya taken to protect its lions? A. Changing the present policy. B. Carrying out laws effectively. C. Making more investment. D. Banning sport hunting. Sport hunting is banned in Kenya, which has allowed lions to live better there 可知选D项。 67. What would be the best title for this passage? A. Lions getting lost in Kenya B. Kenya facing serious problems now C. Kenya losing lions so fast D. Kenyans driving lions out 【解析】选C。 (D) The Book of Life So far, scientists have named about 1.8 million living species, and thats just a small number of what probably exists on Earth. With so many plants, animals, and other living things covering the planet, it can be tough to figure out what type of grass is growing by the roadside or what kind of bird just flew by. A soon-to-be-started website might help. An international team of researchers has announced the creation of web-based Encyclopedia(百科全书)of Life(EoL). The project aims to list every species on Earth in a single, easy-to- use reference guide. To get the encyclopedia started, the creators will use information from scientific databases that already exist. And eventually, in special sections of the site, non-scientists with specialized knowledge will come to help. Bird watchers, for example, will be able to input what birds theyve seen and where. To make sure the encyclopedia is accurate, scientists will review much of the in
