arisewhattheyhavelearntinthismodule.eq\o(\s\up7(),\s\do5(教学参考))WhatIsTheGreenMovementThehistoryoftheGreenMovement,likethatofmanyotherpoliticalandsocialmovements,isjustonepartofAmerica’scomplexhistory。ThoughtheConservationMovementhadEuropeanroots,manyobserversmaintainthattheUnitedStateshasemergedastheworld’sleaderintheGreenMovementandenvironmentalism。IfAmericadoesinfactdeservecreditforleadingtheGreenMovement,whatmadetheUnitedStatessuchacrucibleforgreenhistoryandtheenvironmentalmovement?It’spartlyduetotheimmigrantswhocametotheNorthAmericancontinentinthecolonialera,andpartlythenaturalbeautyofthelandtheyfoundwhentheycrossedtheAtlantic。TheEarlyYearsoftheGreenMovementAmerica,ofcourse,didn’tinventtheGreenMovementanymorethanitinventedtrees。Thebasicprinciplesofsustainableforestrymanagement,forexample,wereknownthroughoutEurope(especiallyGermany,FranceandEngland)sincethemedievalera。FarmingcommunitiesinAsiapracticedsoilconservationthroughterracefarmingandothersustainableagriculturalpractices.EnglishwriterThomasMalthus,inhisoft。quotedAnEssayonthePrincipleofPopulation,alarmedmuchof18thcenturyEuropebyproposingthatanincreaseinhumanpopulationbeyondsustainablelimitswouldresultinacatastrophicplungeinpopulationduetofamineanddisease.Malthus’swritingswouldinformmuchofthealarmoverthe“populationbomb”roughly200yearslater。ButitwasafterthecolonisationoftheAmericasbyEuropeansthatwritersandphilosopherswereamongthefirsttoproposethatwildernesshadanintrinsicvaluebeyonditusefulnesstohumans。Whilefisheries,huntinggroundsandtimberstandswereimportanttocivilisation,visionarieslikeRalphWaldoEmersonandHenryDavidThoreauproposedthat“inwildnessisthepreservationoftheworld”(Thoreau).Theirbeliefthatnaturepossessesaspiritualelementthattranscendedhumanutilitygavethesemenandtheirfollowersthelabel“Transcendentalists”.TheGreenMovementandtheIndustrialRevolutionThetranscendentalismoftheearly1800s,anditscelebrationofthenaturalworld,arrivedjustintimetobetrampledunderfootbytheravagesoftheIndustrialRevolution.Asforestsdisappearedundertheaxofrecklesstimberbarons,coalbecomeapopularsourceofenergy,resultinginhorrificairpollutionincitieslikeLondon,PhiladelphiaandParis。Inthe1850s,acarnivalhucksternamedGeorgeGaleheardaboutanimmenseCaliforniaredwoodthatwasover600yearsoldwhenJesuswasborn.Uponseeingthemagnificenttree,nicknamedTheMotheroftheForest,Galehiredmentocutthetreedownsothatitsbarkcouldbedisplayedinhissideshow.ThereactiontoGale'sstunt,however,wasswiftandugly:“Toourmind,itseemsacruelidea,aperfectdesecration,tocutdownsuchasplendidtree.。。whatintheworldcouldhavepossessedanymortaltoembarkinsuchaspeculationwiththismountainofwood?”wroteoneeditor.Thegrowingrealisationthathumanindustrywasobliteratingirreplaceablewilderness—andendangeringhumanhealth-resultedintheearliesteffortsatmanagingnaturalresources.TheConservationMovementTakesRootAstheIndustrialRevolutioncontinuedtowreakhavoconwilderness,agrowingchorusofvoicessoundedthealarm。AmongthemwereJohnMuir,avisionarypoetoftheAmericanWestandTheodoreRoosevelt,anavidreformerwhomMuirconvincedtosetasidevasttractsofwildernessforconservation。Othermen,however,haddifferentideasaboutthevalueofwilderness。GiffordPinchot,whostudiedforestryinEuropeandbecameanadvocateformanagedforestry,wasonceanallyofMuirandothersintheconservationmovement.AsPinchotcontinuedtobrokertheclearcuttingofvirginforestswithinfluentialtimberbarons,however,hefelloutoffavourwiththosewhobelievedintheimportanceofpreservingnature,regardlessofitscommercialuses。MuirwasamongthosewhodecriedPinchot'smanagementofwildernessareas,anditisMuir’sinterestinpreservationoverconservationthatgaverisetowhatmaybeMuir’sgreatestlegacy:in1892,heandotherscreatedtheSierraClub,to“dosomethingforwildnessandmakethemountainsglad.”TheModernGreenMovementBeginsInthe20thcentury,theConservationMovementwasovershadowedbyeventsliketheGreatDepressionandtwoworldwars。OnlyafterWorldWarⅡended—andtherapidtransformationofNorthAmericafromanagriculturalsocietytoanindustrialonewaswellunderway—didtheModernEnvironmentalMovementbegin.Intothismaelstromsteppedaquiet,studiousscientistandauthor:RachelCarsonin1962publishedSilentSpring,adevastatingargumentagainsttherecklessuseofthepesticidesthatwerewipingoutpopulationsofbirds,insectsandotheranimals.ThenowclassicbookgavevoicetomillionsofAmericanswhosawtheirrichnaturalheritagedisappearingrightbeforetheireyes。FollowingthepublicationofSilentSpringandbookslikePaulErlich'sThePopulationBomb,DemocraticPresidentsJohnF.KennedyandLyndonJohnsonjoinedmanyotherpoliticiansinaddingenvironmentalprotectiontotheirplatforms.EvenRepublicanRichardNixonmadeconsiderableprogresstowardincorporatingenvironmentalawarenessintohisadministration。NotonlydidNixoncreatetheEnvironmentalProtectionAgency(EPA),healsosignedtheNationalEnvironmentalPolicyAct(NEPA),whichrequiredenvironmentalimpactassessmentsforalllargescalefederalprojects.AndonChristmasEveof1968,NASAastronautWilliamAnders,whileorbitingthemoonwiththeApollo8mission,snappedaphotographthatmanypeoplecredieditwithprovidingafoundationfortheModernGreenMovement.Hisphotoshowsasmall,blueplanetEarthpeekingoverthehorizonoftheMoon。TheEnvironmentalMovementandEarthDayInspiredbytheprotestsand“teach.ins”thatwereoccurringworldwidethroughoutthe1960s,SenatorGaylordNelsonproposedin1969thatthereshouldbeanationwidegrassrootsdemonstrationonbehalfoftheenvironment—andinNelson’swords,“Theresponsewaselectric.Ittookofflikegangbusters."ThuswasborntheeventnowknownasEarthDay。OnApril22,1970,thefirstcelebrationofEarthDaytookplaceonagloriousspringday,andtheeventwasatremendoussuccess。MillionsofAmericanstookpartinparades,concerts,speechesandfairsdevotedtopreservingthenaturalheritageoftheUnitedStatesandtheentireworld.Inaspeechthatday,Nelsonstated,“Ourgoalisanenvironmentofdecency,quality,andmutualrespectforallotherhumancreaturesandforalllivingcreatures。”EarthDayisnowcelebratedworldwideandhasbecomeanenvironmentaltouchstonefortwogenerationsofeco。activists.TheEnvironmentalMovementSolidifiesInthemonthsandyearsfollowingthefirstEarthDayandthecreationoftheEPA,theGreenMovementandenvironmentalconsciousnessweresolidifiedintoprivateandpublicinstitutionsaroundtheworld.Landmarkenvironmentallegislation,liketheCleanWaterAct,theFederalPesticidesAct,theCleanAirAct,theEndangeredSpeciesAct,andtheNationalScenicTrailsActs,weresignedintolaw。Thesefederalactsjoinedmanyotherstateandlocalpr
