Forourstudy,conductedbyresearchersfromtheUniversityofBirminghamandOrebroUniversity,weinvited

over1,300younggirlsandboys,aged13-18,fromtenUKschools.Wewereinterestedinbetterunderstandinghow

youngpeopleusesocialmedia,andnowtheyfeelitimpactstheirhealthandwell-being.Todothis,weselected84

participantsfromthemainsampleandhadthemtakepartinsmallgroupinterviews.

Theresultsshowedthatsocialmediaoftenhadapositiveinfluenceonyoungpeople'smotivationforbeing

physicallyactiveandontheirabilitytomakeconsciousdietchoices.Socialmediaalsoallowedthem(oaccessthe

informationtheyfoundinspirational,andlearnaboutdifferentappstheycouldusetobephysicallyactiveormonitor

theirprogress.Theyreportedthatlikes,comments,andviewson(heirsocialmediapostsalsohelped(hemstay

motivatedtoexercise.

Encouragingly,theyoungpeoplewespoketowerealsohighlydiscerningusersofsocialmedia.Theythought

carefullyaboutthecontenttheywereengagingwithonline.Forinstance,theteenagersreportedthattheywouldoften

ignorecontentthathadthepotentialtoleadtoharm,suchasimagesorvideos(hatpresentedunrealisticworkoutsor

expectationsfortheirbodies.

Whiletherisksshouldcertainlynotbeoverlooked,ourfindingsshowthatsocialmediacanhaveapositive

effectonyoungpeople'shealthandwell-being.Abenefitofsocialmediaisthatitprovidesreal-time,low-cost
