Rosa

a

of

asking

her

students

to

line

up

for

outside.“Pueden

she

tells

them.

In

English,

Ramirezwould

say,“You

you

But

this

is

the

half

Students

in

across

the

Many

of

them

designedto

serve

students

from

Spanish-speaking

as

well

as

students

from

other

under

growing

evidencethat

learning

two

languages

can

help

people

all

become

stronger

students.

About

3.8

million

students

in

US

schools

are

native

Spanish

speakers

who

are

not

good

at

English.

They

makeup

a

large

part

of

about

five

million

students

nationwide

identified

as

English

learners.

English

languagelearners

are

the

fastest-growing

population

in

schools

and

the

lowest-performing,

as

judged

by

achievement

testsandgraduation

rates.

Sixty-seven

percent

of

students

with

limited

English

skills

graduated

from

high

school

afterfour

years

in

2016,

compared

with

84%

of

all

students.

Language

experts

recommend

how

to

improve

the

situation:

more

high-quality,

long-term

bilingual

programscan

close

the

achievement

gap

between

English

learners

and

native

English

speakers

after

five

to

six

years,

accordingto

research.

The

programs

can

be

hard

to

put

into

practice.

Problems

include

a

debate

over

the

best

way

to

teach

Englishlearners,

shortages

of

bilingual

teachers,

and

even

the

fact

that

bilingual

programs

often

grow

fastest

in

areas

whereupper-income

parents

ask

for

them.

That's

good

for

children

who

participate,

but

it

worries

people

who

want

to

seelanguage-minority

students

have

equal

access.

“If

we

can

make

children

feel

more

ready

and

more

accepted,

then

we'

ve

gone

a

long

way

to

making

them

readyto

learn,”says

英式英语和美式英语在读音上的差异主要反映在元音字母a,o和辅音字母r的不同读音上。(1)在ask,can’t,dance,fast,half,path

这一类的单词中,英国人将字母a读作/a:/,而美国人则读作/æ/,所以这些词在美国人口中就成了/æsk/,/kænt/,/dæns/,/fæst/,/hæf/和/pæθ/。(2)在box,crop,hot,spot这一类单词中,英国人将字母o读作/ɒ/,而美国人则将o读作/a:/。所以这些词美国人读起来就成了/ba:ks/,/kra:p/,/ha:t/和/spa:t/。(3)辅音字母r在单词中是否发音是英式英语与美式英语的又一明显差异。在英式英语的r音节中不含卷舌音/r/,而美式英语的r音节中含卷舌音/r/。如下列词在英式英语和美式英语中读音是不同的。单词英式英语读音美式英语读音car/kɑː//kɑːr/door/dɔ://dɔ:r/party/ˌpɑːti//ˌpɑːrti/board/bɔ:d//bɔ:rd/课文语篇研读1.Discussing

English

has

surely

become

the

global

language.

Whenever

we

turn

on

the

news

to

find

out

what’s

happening

in

East

Asia,

or

Africa,

or

anywhere,

people

are

being

interviewed

and

telling

us

about

it

in

English.

If

people

look

at

the

facts

about

the

amazing

reach

of

the

English

language,

many

would

be

surprised.

English

is

used

in

over

90

countries

as

an

official

or

semi-official

language.

English

is

the

working

language

of

many

international

institutes

(研究所)as

well

as

of

most

international

research

scientists.

It

is

also

the

language

that

Indian

parents

and

black

parents

wish

their

children

to

learn.

It

is

believed

that

over

one

billion

people

worldwide

are

now

learning

English.

One

of

the

most

important

causes

of

the

spread

of

English

around

the

world

is

that

Europeans

are

willing

to

accept

it

as

their

language.

English

is

spreading

from

northern

Europe

to

the

south

and

is

now

the

second

language

in

countries

such

as

Sweden,

Norway,

Netherlands

and

Denmark.

If

one

visits

any

of

them,

it

would

seem

that

almost

everyone

there

can

talk

in

English.

Recently,

a

report

said

that

at

the

of

2001,

English

was

the

most

widely

known

foreign

language

with

43%

of

Europeans

saying

they

it.

The

report

also

said

that

with

over

89%

of

the

population

speaking

English,

Sweden

now

has

the

highest

percentage

of

English

speakers.

What’s

more,

English

is

the

language

rated

as

most

useful

to

and

over

77%

of

Europeans

who

do

not

speak

English

Living

in

two

different

cultures

has

its

benefits

and

challenges.

Although

I

was

born

in

America,

my

parents

emigrated

to

the

US

from

Sri

Lanka.

Sri

Lanka

is

an

island

off

the

coast

of

India.

The

customs,

traditions,

and

culture

are

the

same

in

India

as

it

is

in

Sri

Lanka.

When

my

parents

came

to

the

US,

they

continued

to

perform

their

customs

and

hold

on

to

their

beliefs

and

traditions.

This

has

influenced

me

in

several

ways.

Although

my

family

and

I

live

in

the

US,

we

follow

the

customs

and

traditions

of

Sri

Lanka

and

India.

I

have

learned

to

speak

three

languages,

including

English.

I

eat

a

variety

of

foods

and

celebrate

different

holidays

that

have

to

do

with

my

religion

and

culture.

It

is

very

fun

when

I

get

to

interact

with

people

of

my

nationality

and

speak

to

them

in

a

different

language.

It

is

also

a

benefit

because

I

get

to

celebrate

with

all

my

family

and

have

different

foods

and

learn

new

things

about

my

culture.

Sharing

my

culture

and

information

about

my

nationality

with

others

is

very

important

to

me.

I

feel

that

people

should

have

a

good

understanding

of

who

I

am

and

what

my

life

is

like.

I

always

try

to

incorporate

(吸收)

both

American

and

Indian

traditions,

customs

and

foods.

Even

though

this

can

be

a

major

advantage,

there

are

many

setbacks

to

being

part

of

two

cultures.

All

of

my

family

was

born

in

Sri

Lanka,

so

I’m

not

a

part

of

several

different

nationalities,

such

as

Greek,

Italian,

German,

and

others.

My

cousins,

my

siblings

and

I

are

the

only

ones

born

out

of

Sri

Lanka.

Speaking

a

language

at

home

and

speaking

another

language

in

school

can

get

confusing.

This

is

because

sometimes

I

have

trouble

expressing

my

thoughts

in

English.5.How

does

When

it

comes

to

learning

a

foreign

language,

many

people

wonder

if

they

will

be

able

to

memorize

enough

vocabulary.

But

this

question

never

happens

about

their

mother

tongue,

and

yet,

it

was

a

foreign

language

once.

However,

among

all

the

questions

that

new

parents

ask,

no

doctor

has

ever

heard:“Will

my

baby

be

able

to

learn

my

language?”

Be

honest,

do

you

know

all

the

words

of

your

mother

tongue?

The

answer

is:“No.”

New

words

and

new

ways

of

using

old

words,

appear

every

day.

Twenty

years

ago,

who

would

have

been

able

to

understand

a

sentence

like

this:“Click

here

to

download

your

digital

book?”

Nobody.

You

never

stop

learning

new

vocabulary

and

you

never

know

how

long

you

will

need

it.

Sometimes,

you

have

the

word

on

the

tip

of

your

tongue…and

it

sticks

there!

But

you

do

know

this

phenomenon

(现象)

and

don’t

think

that

it

is

because

of

a

bad

memory.

You

should

not

give

this

phenomenon

more

importance

in

the

language

you

are

learning

than

in

your

mother

tongue.

You

need

to

learn

only

2,000

or

so

basic

words

to

be

able

to

create

any

phrase

you

need.

You

can’t

avoid

some

work

in

order

to

learn

these

necessary

words

and

all

the

more

if

you

want

to

learn

quickly.

And

before

you

consider

buying

into

any

method,

be

sure

it

is

right

for

you.

It

is

not

wise

to

depend

on

any

methods

based

upon

mnemonics

(记忆术).

The

first

words

seem

very

easy

to

learn,

so

you

buy

the

course,

but

then

you

discover

quickly,

though

too

late,

that

a

dozen

words

later,

it

is

all

the

a

new
