Theadvancementofinformationandcommunicationtechnologiesis

usheringintheeraof6G,whichpromisestorevolutionizeourdigital

experiences.Expectedtobuilduponthefoundationslaidby5G,6Gaims

todeliverricher,moreimmersiveexperiences,achieveubiquitous

coverage,andfosternewformsofcollaboration.Asanext-generation

technology,6Gispoisedtoenableaplethoraofnovelapplication

scenarioswhileenhancingexistingfunctionalities.

TheInternationalTelecommunicationUnionRadiocommunication

Sector(lTU-R)hassetforthavisionforthecapabilitiesofIMT-2030,

encompassingboththeenhancementofcurrent5Gcapabilitiesandthe

introductionofbrand-newfunctionalitiestargetedspecificallyat6G,

Thesecapabilitiesarecategorizedintotwomaingroups:theenhancement

ofexisting5Gcapabilitiesandnewcapabilitiestargetedat6G.

AICapabilities:NativeAIin6GnetworksmeansconsideringAI

duringthedesignphase.AIcapabilitiesempowertheentirenetwork,

includingaccessnetworks,corenetworks,andendpoints.Furthermore,

6Gnetworkintelligenceisinherentlyendowedwitheachnetwork

functionandtheentirenetwork,achievingautonomousoperationof

networkservices,business,andfunctions,trulybecomingahigh-level

autonomousnetwork,andservingasapivotandfoundationforenabling

intelligentindustries,withouthumaninterventionforself-monitoring,

self-organizing,self-optimizing,andself-repairing.

CommunicationandSensingConvergenceCapability:The6G

networkwillincorporatenewsensingcapabilitiestosupportintegrated

communicationandsensingscenarios.Thisconvergenceleveragesthe

extensivereachofmobilecommunicationnetworkstonotonlyenhance

communicationabilitiesbutalsoempowerthenetworkwith

high-precisionsensing.Thisdualfunctionalityfacilitatestheintelligent

connectionofallthings,creatingasynergybetweencommunicationand

sensingthatwasnotpossiblewithpreviousgenerationsofnetworks.

DataServiceCapability:Withtheproliferationofintelligent

applicationscenariosandthedeepeningintegrationofpassivesystems,

6Gnetworkswillbehometomassiveamountsofheterogeneousdata.To

effectivelymanagethisdatadeluge,itisimperativethatdataservicesbe

incorporatedintothenetworkarchitecture.Theshiftfromcentralizedto

distributeddataservicesrepresentsasignificantevolutioninhowdatais

processed.Bydistributingdataservicesclosertothesource,6Gnetworks

canofferreal-timeprocessing,therebyprovidingfasterresponsetimes.

Additionally,thenativeAIcapabilitiesof6Grequirevastamountsofdata

formodeltraining,furtherunderscoringtheimportanceofefficientdata

management.Assuch,6Gnetworksmustbecapableofdeliveringsecure

andefficientdataservicesbothinternallyandexternallytoenhancedata

flowefficiencyanduserexperience.

UbiquitousComputingCapability:Thelimitationsofcentralized

cloudcomputingarebecomingincreasinglyapparent,especiallyin

scenariosthatdemandlowlatency,highbandwidth,andreal-time

processing—suchasimmersivecloudXR,autonomousdriving,andother

advancedapplications.Tomeetthesediversecomputingneeds,6Gwill

leveragedistributedcomputilitydeployments.Thisapproachensuresthat

computingresourcesareavailablewhereverandwhenevertheyare

needed,providingatrulyubiquitouscomputingcapability.Such

adaptabilityisessentialformeetingthedemandsofpervasiveintelligent

applicationsandcateringtoavarietyofdataservicerequirements.

UbiquitousConnectivity:Ahallmarkof6Gnetworkswillbetheir

abilitytoofferwide-areaconnectivitythatspansvariousenvironments,

includingsky,earth,air,andsea.Thiscomprehensivereachaimsto

satisfytheheterogeneousaccessscenariosandperformancerequirements

ofdiverseapplicationareas.Bymaintainingconsistentuserexperiences

acrossdifferentlocations,6Gnetworkswilltacklechallengesrelatedto

connectivity,coverage,capacity,datarates,andterminalmobility.

Ubiquitousconnectivityisfundamentalforenablinguserstoseamlessly

transitionbetweenenvironmentswhileenjoyinghigh-quality,

uninterruptedservice.

2.Requirement

In5G,theseparationofsoftwareandhardwarethroughvirtualization

andcontainerizationtechnologies,coupledwiththeintroductionofa

servicedarchitecture,allowsthenetworktohaveacertaindegreeof

flexibilityandscalability,buttherearestillsomeproblemsthatneedtobe

solvedduetothelimitationsofthe5Garchitecture.

•CentralizedNetworkModel:Thecentralizednatureof5G

networkspresentslimitationsintermsofdeploymentand

customizationforfutureapplications.Italsoposesasinglepoint

offailurerisk,whereanissueatonecentralnodecouldimpact

theentirenetwork.

•RudimentaryUserRequirementManagement:5Gnetworks

employnetworkslicingtodifferentiateservicesbutstillhavea

relativelyuniformarchitectureandlogicalfunctiondivision

amongslices.Thisapproachlacksthegranularityneededto

effectivelycatertodiversescenariosanticipatedin6G.

•InsufficientNetworkFunctionSinking:While5Genableslocal

dataservicesthroughuser-planefunctionsinkingandprivate

networkestablishmentforcertainToC(Technologyof

Consumer)andToB(TechnologyofBusiness)applications,its

centralizedmanagementisinadequateforabroaderspectrumof

industrialuses.Additionally,thelackofinterconnectivity

betweenprivatenetworkshindersflexibleresourceallocation.

•SeparateDevelopmentofArithmeticNetworkandMobile

CommunicationNetwork:Thecurrentdivisionbetween

arithmetic(computational)networksandmobilecommunication

networksleadstoasituationwherecomputationalresources

cannotbeefficientlyutilizedduetolackofintegration.

Centralizedcloudcomputingisnotsufficientforlow-latency,

high-bandwidth,real-timeapplicationssuchasimmersivecloud

XRandautonomousdriving.Thisseparationneedstobe

addressedtoimprovecollaborationandreducelatency.

•Chimney-TypeDataServices:In5G,dataservicesareorganized

insilos,whichhindersdataqualityandefficiency.This

chimney-typestructurebecomesabottleneckindatacollection

andsharing.Additionally,thestorage,interfaces,anddata

managementprotocolsvaryacrossdifferentgenerationsof

communicationnetworks,creatingcompatibilityissues.

•NetworkIntelligencePlug-inandStrongCoupling:The

networkintelligencein5Gisoftenimplementedasaplug-in,

withAIfunctionsprovidedbyindependententitiesinsideor

outsidethenetwork.Thisresultsinahighdegreeofcoupling

betweenAIcomponents.ThefragmentednatureofnetworkAI

applicationscenariosandresearchrequiresamoreintegrated

andstreamlinedapproachtofacilitatebroaderusecasesand

smootheroperation.

Inordertomeetthedemandfor6Gmulti-scenariodifferentiation,6G

networkinnovationisrequired.

•NetworkFlexibility:Emergingapplicationssuchasholographic

communication,immersiveXR(ExtendedReality),sensory

interconnection,Telematics,andautonomousdrivinghave

diverseperformancerequirementsintermsofdelay,reliability,

throughput,etc.Thisnecessitatesthat6Gnetworksmustbe

flexibleandscalabletorapidlyadapttothesevariedneeds.

•DeeperServitization:Theconceptofservitization,whichrefers

tothetransformationofproductsintoservices,needstogo

deeperinthenetwork.Thisincludesenhancingtheservitization

ofthecorenetworkcontrolplane,extendingittotheuserplane,

thentotheRadioAccessNetwork(RAN),andfinallytothe

UserEquipment(UE).Thegoalistoachieveend-to-end

servitizationoftheentirenetwork.

•DistributedArchitecture:Scenarioslikecloudgamingand

immersiveXRrequiretemporary,largebandwidth,and

low-latencyaccessservices.Holographiccommunicationand

Telematicsnotonlyneedhighbandwidthandultra-lowlatency

butalsodemanddataservices,AIservices,andcomputation

services.Applicationslikefederatedlearningmustconsiderthe

locationofdatasources,computationalresources,andlatency,

requiringdynamicconfigurationofnetworkfunctionsand

resources.Theseneedspushthenetworktowardsaflexible,

end-to-enddistributedarchitecturethatcanprovideubiquitous

connectivityandproximitynetworkservices,alongwith

real-timeornear-real-timequalityofservicemonitoringand

managementcapabilitiestosatisfydiverseuserdemands.

•Multi-factorOn-DemandIntelligentOrchestration:The

adventofnewapplicationssuchasholographiccommunication,

immersiveXR,sensoryinterconnection,connectedvehicles,and

autonomousdrivingdemandmorethanjustconnectivity

servicesfrom6Gnetworks.Thesescenariosrequireperception

services,intelligentservices,dataservices,andarithmetic

(computational)services.Consequently,6Gnetworksmustbe

capableofcross-layerandmulti-layerintelligentorganization

basedonuserneedstoprovideacomprehensiverangeof

services.

•End-Edge-Network-CloudCollaboration:Forcomputational

services,6Gnetworksareexpectedtoevolvetowardsa

distributedmulti-tieredcomputingcollaborationframeworkthat

integrates"cloud,network,edge,end,andindustry".This

architecturewillinvolvethecloudhandlinglarge-volumeand

complexcomputationsalongwithalgorithmtraining,theedge

focusingonagileaccessandlocalcomputation,andthe

endpointbeingresponsibleforpervasivecomputingtaskslike

sensingandinteraction.Asbusiness,data,andAImovetowards

distributeddevelopment,efficientcollaborationbetweencloud,

edge,andendpointcomputingresourcesbecomesessential.

•DataCollaborationandDataSharing:Recognizingthe

naturallydistributednatureofdata,thereisaneedforaunified

dataserviceframeworkthatmanagesandschedulesthelifecycle

ofdataservicestoenhanceefficiency.Centeredarounduser

demands,thisinvolvesaglobalperspectiveondatasource

selection,networkelementfunctionconfiguration,network

topologydesign,andotherdataserviceunits.Theseelements

mustbeorganizedinanorderlymanner,withreal-timeanalysis

conductedbyjointedgedataservicestogenerateservicesthat

meettherequirements.

•EndogenousIntelligence:Arithmeticanddataresourcesare

ubiquitous,andintegratingnetworkandterminalarithmeticnear

thedatasourcetorealizeintelligentcapabilitiesandprovide

intelligentservicescanimproveprocessingefficiency,reduce

datatransmissioncosts,reducelatency,protectdataprivacy,and

realizegreenandlow-carbon.

3.Architecture

3.1ArchitectureDesignPrinciples

Thearchitecturedesignfor6Gnetworksmustbeapproachedfroma

holisticperspective,aligningwiththekeycapabilityindexesproposedby

theInternationalTelecommunicationUnionRadiocommunicationSector

(ITU-R).Thedesignshouldaccommodatenewscenariosand

technologieswhileallowingfortheseamlessevolutionfrom5Gto6G

networks.Thefollowingdesignprinciplesarecrucial:

Simplicity:

The6Gnetworkisenvisionedasaconvergedairandspaceintegrated

network.Asthescaleofnetworkaccessgrowsanddemandsbecome

morediverse,simplicityinarchitectureandprotocolsisessential.This

simplicityenablesefficientdatatransmissionandon-demandnetwork

functiondeployment.Itaimstoprovidealightweightandflexible

closed-loopnetworkthateffectivelyreducesenergyconsumptionand

avoidsunnecessarynetworkredundancy.

Convergence

The6Gnetworkaimstomovebeyondtraditionalunidimensional

communicationandtransmissionservices.Itwillintegratecapabilities

suchassensinganddataprocessingtooffermulti-dimensionalinternal

andexternalinformationservices.Byfullyleveragingthenetwork

resourceplatform,itcansupportcomprehensivelife-cycleservicesfor

thedevelopmentofafullyinformationalsociety.

Flexibility

6Gaimstoimplementafull-service/programmablenetwork

architecturethatseparatessoftwarefromhardwareresources.This

separationallowsforflexibleresourceallocation,enhancingthe

network'sadaptability.Itreducesthecostsassociatedwithnetwork

upgradesandreplacementsbyenablingamoremodularapproach.The

networkshouldprovide"plug-and-play"capabilitiesforvariousemerging

applicationscenariosandverticalindustries,allowingthemtointegrate

seamlessly.

Endogenous

The6Gnetworkarchitectureshouldincorporateendogenous

intelligence,arithmetic,andsecurity.Thisintegrationaimstoachieve

ubiquitousnetworking,computation,andintelligence,penetratingevery

domain,network,andunitthroughouttheirentirelifecycle.Bydoingso,

the6Gnetworkarchitecturewillinherentlysupportanewparadigmthat

extendsbeyondtraditionalconnectivityandisdrivenbyartificial

intelligence(AI).

Openness

The6Gnetworkshouldserveasanopenplatformthatfacilitates

businessopportunitiesbyconnectingthenetwork'sinternalcapabilities

withexternaldemands.Itshouldestablishrobustinteroperabilityand

openness,supportingallindividualsandenterprisescapableofinteracting

withthenetwork.Byleveragingnetworkresources,itcanoffervaluable

assistancetofurtherthedevelopmentofindustryinformatization.

3.2SystemArchitecture

Basedonthedesignprinciples,a6Gnetworkarchitectureis

proposed,includinganetworkresourceandinfrastructurelayer,a

networkfunctionlayer,aserviceandcapabilityopenlayer,management

orchestration,andendogenousenablement.

NetworkResourcesandInfrastructureLayer

Thislayerprovidesthenecessaryinfrastructureand

multidimensionalresourcesrequiredforthegenerationofnetwork

functions.Itencompassesarangeofresourcesincludingubiquitous

wireless,computing,storage,andnetworkingcapabilities.Resources

includeunifiedvirtualizedresources,abstractablephysicalresources,and

dedicatedhigh-performancehardwareresources.Theseresourcesarethe

operationalfoundationfortheentirenetworkandaremanagedbythe

networkfunctionsoftheupperlayers.Asapass-senseintegratednetwork,

itoffersdatainformationcollectioncapabilities,providingsupportforAI

applicationsthroughbigdata.

NetworkFunctionLayer

Buildingonthepervasiveinfrastructurefromthelowerlayer,this

layerinterconnectsdynamicallydistributedresources.Itenables

communication,sensing,computation,intelligence,anddigitalsecurity

networkfunctionsthroughtheunifiedandcooperativeschedulingof

multidimensionalresources.Thelayersupportsatomizationfunctions

suchassplitting,combining,orexpandingthatusersrequireindifferent

networksystems.

Itisrepresentedbymultiplenetworkelementsthatofferfull-service

solutions,meetingthefragmented,diverse,andcomplexnetwork

demandsofvariousindustryapplications.Thelayertransformsthe

traditional"application-adaptednetwork"intoan"application-defined

network"byprovidingon-demandintelligent,simple,andtrusted

functionsandservices.Throughendogenousempowerment,thenetwork

continuouslyintegratesandabsorbsadvancedtechnologies,becomingan

evolutionaryforcethatprogressestomoreadvancedstages.Thenetwork

functionssupporttheexplosivegrowthofnewindustriesandapplications,

offeringasmartandstreamlinedplatform.Thislayercontributestothe

transformationandupgradingofeconomicandsocialdigitization,

networking,andintelligence.

DataPlane

Itisresponsiblefordatamanagementfunctionssuchascollection,

processing,analysisandserviceofalldatainthewholenetwork.Driven

bythedemandof"SmartConnectionofEverything,DigitalTwin",it

improvestheperformanceofdataservices,reducestheoverheadofdata

transmissiononbandwidth,carriesoutunifiedandcollaborative

managementofdatainthewholenetwork,supports6Gtoprovidesafe,

sharedandtrustworthydataservicesforthewholenetwork,andcreates

morevaluethroughintelligentprocessingandanalysisofdata.Atthe

sametime,itprovidessecureandefficientdataservicesbothinsideand

outsidethenetworktoenhancedataflowefficiencyanduserexperience.

ControlPlane

Thecontrolplaneisanenhancedfunctionalplane.6Gnetwork

architecturewillsupporttraditionalconnectivityservices,butalsoadd

controlservicesrelatedtointelligence,arithmetic,securityandother

capabilities,realizingamajorshiftfrommobilecommunicationsto

mobileinformationservices.Thecontrolplanewillalsoexpandfroma

singleconnectionservicecontroltomultiplebusinessdimensionsof

communication,computing,intelligenceanddigitalcontrol,supportthe

unifiedandsimpleaccessofstar-earthconvergence,facilitatethe

in-depthintegrationofendogenouscapabilitiessuchas

intelligence/security/calculationpowerwiththenewarchitecture,and

realizeflexible,intelligent,andsecurecontrolofthenetworkbasedon

theendogenouscapabilitiesconferredbyendogenousempowerment.

UserPlane

Theuserplaneisanenhancedfunctionalplane.Astheonlyfacein

thenetworkarchitecturethatprovidesuserdatatrafficprocessingand

forwardingfunctions,theuserplaneisthecoreofrealizingtheultimate

experienceofuserservices,andthewindowforrealizingthe"user"asthe

center.Theuserplanesupportsthedataforwardingandtransmissionof

multi-dimensionalnewservicesthroughexpansiontomeetthe

transmissionrequirementsof6Gcommunication,perception,arithmetic,

intelligence,data,andsecureconvergednetwork;underthetrendof

end-to-endfull-serviceprovisioning,theuserplaneservicingwillbe

drivenbyscenariostoactivatethenetwork'sapplicationmodethrough

"orderingaccordingtoasingledish",combinedwiththeservicingof

RAN.Inthetrendofend-to-endfull-serviceprovisioning,userplane

serviceprovisioningwillactivatetheapplicationmodeofnetwork

throughscene-driven"àlacarte",which,combinedwithRANservice

provisioning,willbringthepossibilityofoptimizationbysplittingand

restructuringtheuserplanefunctionsoftheaccessnetworkandthecore

networkatthesametime.high-precisiontimesynchronization;inorder

toachievehigh-performanceforwardingandnetworkautonomous

interconnection,theuserplaneneedstoenhanceorintroducenew

transportprotocols.

ServiceandCapabilityOpenLayer

Itextracts,encapsulatesandcombinesthenetworkfunctionsofthe

lowerlayers,andprovideson-demandcapabilitiesorservicesthatcanbe

openedforinternalnetworkservicesorexternalapplications,covering

connectivityaswellasavarietyofcapabilitiesorservicessuchasdata,

computing,intelligenceandorchestrationmanagement,whichisthe

externalembodimentofnetworkasaservice.

Theserviceandcapabilityopenlayerinteroperateswiththe

applicationlayerinthenorthdirectionandconnectswithcapabilitiesand

servicesinthesouthdirection,supportsthesafeopeningofnetwork

capabilities,andprovidescallable,friendlyandrichAPIinterfacesfor

atomiccapabilities.Accordingtothebusinessrequirementsofdifferent

scenarios,itprovideson-demandnetworkservicesforubiquitoususers

andimprovestheeffectofuserexperience.Atthesametime,itinteracts

withotherlayers/facestocollectandencapsulatetheserviceand

capabilityopenlayerofotherlayers/faces.

Endogenousempowermentrealizesfulllifecyclemanagementof

endogenouscapabilitiesandon-demandschedulingofmultipleelements

ofendogenouscapabilitieswithinthenetwork,createsendogenous

multi-dimensionalcapabilities,andempowersthenetworkwithnetwork

functionssuchasintelligence,arithmeticpower,security,etc.,which

servesasthefoundationofthe6Gnetwork,andbuildsupanon-demand,

flexibleandefficientendogenouscapabilityresourcepool.Basedon

endogenousempowerment,the6Gnetworkcanoptimizenetwork

performanceandachievenetworkautonomybyusingendogenous

capabilitiesinternallywithoutexternalintervention;externally,itcangive

moresupporttonewservicesforapplicationsinvariousindustriesand

improveuserexperience.Thecurrentcapabilitiesofendogenous

empowermentincludeintelligence,arithmetic,andsecurity,andthe

capabilitiesofendogenousempowermentwillcontinuetoexpandwith

theemergenceofnewbusinessscenariosandverticalindustries.

EndogenousSecurity

Theintroductionofnewapplicationscenariosandnewkey

technologiesin6Gbringsnewsecurityproblems.6Gnetworksecurity

capabilityshouldbeintegratedintothenetworkarchitecture,and

endogenoussecurityempowermentisorientedbyendogenoussecurity,

basedondistributedtrustworthiness,breakingthetraditionalsecurity

boundaries,anddeployingdatasecurityandprivacyprotection

technologies,whichcanprovideendogenoussecuritysensing,defense

andpreventionfunctionsforeachfunctionandresourceofthe6G

networksystemandmakethesecuritycapabilityon-demand

customizableandon-demandaccess.Thesecuritycapabilitiescanbe

customizedondemand,guaranteeingnetworkandusersecurityinternally

andrealizingtheopennessofsecuritycapabilitiesexternally.Ultimately,

the6Gnetworkarchitectureempowerstheformationofautomatic

immunity,trustandconsensus,synergisticelasticity,intelligentand

efficientsecuritysystem,andrealizestheeffectiveoperationoftheentire

networkwithmultipleapplicationsandhighreliabilityandhighsecurity

inparallel.

EndogenousAI

Artificialintelligencewillbecomethefirstendogenousdrivingforce

forthedevelopmentofhigh-performancenetworks.6Gnetwork

intelligencewilldeeplyintegrateanddesignAI'sarithmetic,data,

algorithms,andotherelementalrequirementsinnetworkfunctions,

architecture,protocols,andprocesses,realizingtheon-demand

schedulingandflowofAIdata,algorithms,arithmetic,andotherresource

elementsatthenetworklevel,andmorereal-timeandhigh-efficiencyAI

training/reasoning,aswellastheintelligentidentificationofAIscenarios

andthesmartgenerationofusecases,soastoimprovenetwork

performanceandefficiencythroughAI.TheAInetworkcanbeusedto

improvetheperformanceandefficiencyofthenetworkthroughAIand

realizeahighlevelofautonomyofthenetwork.Throughtheintelligent

nativecapabilitiesofthenetwork,itcanachievebusinessintelligenceand

serviceintelligence,andtrulybecomeanend-to-endhigh-level

autonomousnetwork,aswellasalinkandcornerstoneforempowering

thousandsofindustrieswithuniversalintelligence.

EndogenousComputility

Astheemergenceofnewusers,technologies,applicationsand

scenarioshasbroughtaboutexponentialgrowthindatavolume,various

industrieshaveputforwardamoreurgentneedforarithmeticpowerand

network.6Gnetworkwillbedeeplyintegratedwitharithmeticnetwork,

andarithmeticpowercapabilitywillbebuiltintothearchitecture,which

ontheonehandwillenablethemobilecommunicationnetworkto

efficientlyutilizearithmeticresourcesandbuildanenhancednetwork

architecturewithendogenousarithmeticpower;andontheotherhand,it

canprovidearithmeticpowerservicesforexternalindustrialapplications

throughthemobilecommunicationnetworktoempowerthediversified

applicationneedsofthousandsofindustries.Ontheotherhand,itcan

providearithmeticservicesforexternalindustryapplicationsthroughthe

mobilecommunicationnetwork,empoweringthediversifiedapplication

needsofthousandsofindustries.Throughtheunifiedendogenous

empowermentandpenetrationofarithmeticservicecapability,itcan

providearithmeticserviceforotherlayers/facets.

OrchestrationManagement

Orchestrationmanagementisgivennewmeaningsandcapabilities

in6Gtomatchthemanagementrequirementsofon-demandservicesin

6Gfull-scenarionetworks.Throughintelligentsensingofuserintentand

servicedemand,itrealizesintelligentcooperativeschedulingand

dynamicschedulingofintentpoliciesacrossmultipleservices,multiple

domains,andtheentirelifecycle,andrealizesclosed-loopassuranceof

servicequalityinheterogeneousenvironments.Throughin-depthsensing

andintelligentmanagementofheterogeneousresourcesinthewhole
