Todothis,theywillfirstbuildartificialintelligence(AI)thatwillbetrainedtogo
throughhistoricaltexts,writteninsevendifferentlanguages,foranydescriptionsof
scents.TheAIwillalsobetrainedtodetectimagesofobjectsinthetextsthatmightbe
scented.Theteamwillthenusethisinformationtocreateanonlineencyclopedia(百科
全书)ofsmellsfromEurope’spast.
Theencyclopediawillincludethemeaningofcertainscentsandwilltracethestories
behindscents,placesandrelatedpractices,accordingtoprojectleaderAngela
Lee.“ThisdatabasewillbecomealibraryforthesmellheritageofEurope,enabling
futuregenerationstoaccessandlearnaboutthescentedpast.”Theencyclopediawill
alsoincludedescriptionsofpeopleforwhomsmellwasimportant.
Theresearcherswillthenworkwithchemistsandperfumemakerstorecreatepast
smellsandfigureouthowtodisplaythesmellsinmuseumsandotherhistorical
sites.Withcurrenttechnology,almosteveryscentcanbeproduced.“Themore
difficultpartoftheprojectwillbetofinddescriptionsofscents,becausepeople
haven’talwaystalkedorwrittenaboutthem,”Leesaid.
Scentplaysacentralroleinoureverydaylife,evenactingasapowerfultimemachine
intoourownpastwithitsabilitytoactivatelong-forgottenmemories.Butit’salsoa
