trainingstudentstoproducemonoclonalantibodiesforlabsoncampus.1wasimpressedthattheprofessorhad

takenonthistypeofambitiousprojectwithrelativelyinexperiencedstudents.Curious(ofindoutmore,Isetupa

meetingwithJohnandwasstruckbyhissincerityandthewayheprioritizedstudenttrainingabovegrants,

publications,andpersonalambition.Icouldalsoseehispassionforteaching,whichremindedmeofthedreamto

becomeahighschoolbiologyteacher.

holdtwopositions:classroominstructorandresearchco-adviserof15inexperiencedbuteagerundergraduates.

Bothrolesgivemeachancetohelpstudentstransformthemselves,whichisenormouslyrewarding.

universities.Wcsometimesstruggletogetaccesstofederalfunding,scientificconferences,andotherresources

andopportunities.Mypayisbelowthestandardat4-yearresearchinstitutions,even(houghmyteaching

workloadisgreater.Butmyoccasionalfrustrationisrelievedbythethoughtofthestudents,whoIhavehelped

train.

Lookingbackatthese10years,Irealizehowmuchmyworkonthiscampushashelpedmegrow,bothasan

academicandatutor.TmgratefulthatIsteppedawayfromatraditionalcareerpathandfoundawaytoserveboth

thestudentandresearchcommunitiesinmyownway,modestthougaitmaybe.
