Context:

Morethan80%farmersinIndiaaresmallholderswhoownlessthan2hectaresofland.

Apartfromlimitedaccesstofinance,informationandmarkets,climatechangeand

geopoliticalsituationsareaddingtothechallengesthatthesefarmersgrapplewithto

sustaintheirincome.TheAI4AIinitiativehasdevelopedadigitalagricultureframeworkaimedatscalingtechnologiesoftheFourthIndustrialRevolutionintheagricultural

sectorthroughpublic-privatepartnershipstoimprovefarmers’accesstofinance,shrinkagriculture’senvironmentalimpactandreducepost-harvestsupply-chainlosses.

hAction:

ThroughapilotprogrammeinTelanganastateinvolving7,000chilifarmers,theprogrammecalledSaaguBaaguwasabletodemonstratethetransformativepotential

ofagriculturaltechnology(agritech)onbothfarmers’

incomesandtheenvironmentalimpactofagriculture.

Basedontheencouragingresults,theGovernmentof

Telanganahasdecidedtoscaletheinitiativeto500,000farmersandimplementthestate’sfirstagricultural

dataexchange.AI4AIhasalsobuiltonthesuccessoftheTelanganapilotandlaunchedtheprogrammeintwomorestates,UttarPradeshandMaharashtra.

Itisnowexploringtheopportunitytoexpandthe

learningsacrosstheCentrefortheFourthIndustrialRevolutionNetworkandgovernmentsglobally.

Result:

Duringthereportingperiod,

50,062farmers

ofwhomover45%were

women,sawincremental

increaseinprofitsof$800peracrethrougha21%

yieldimprovementand

9%reductionintheuseoffertilizersandpesticides.

TheCentrefortheFourthIndustrialRevolutionIndiahasbeenacritical

partnerforusinconceptualizingSaagu

BaaguandAgriDataExchange,initiativesthathighlightedyield,optimaluseof

inputsandultimatelyfarmers’income.Basedonthesuccessofthepilotwith7,000farmers,wehavescaledthe

initiativeto50,000farmersandplantoscaleittoimpact500,000farmersinthenexttwoyears.
