AgreementandUnitedNationsSustainableDevelopmentGoals.LEEDcertifiedcommercialprojectshavebeendesignedtoreducecarbon
emissionsbymorethan120millionmetrictonstilldate,demonstratingthatthepathtoglobaldecarbonizationrunsthroughoursector.
Wehaveshownthatanybuildingcanbepartofamoresustainableand
healthyfuture—from500-year-oldstructurestothetallestbuildingsin
theworld—andwehavedefinedwhatmakesbuildingshealthy,equitable,andresilient.
Importantly,thisisnotonlyUSGBC’swork,buttheimpactofawide
andpassionatecommunityofmorethan5,000memberorganizationsandaglobalnetworkofprofessionalsandvolunteers.Thisimpact
belongstothegenerationsofinspiredindividualsthathavemadeupourmovement.
Weareproudofthisprogressandthemarkettransformationwehaveachievedtodate.However,weknowthatsignificantworkremains,andwerecommitoureffortstoachievingimpactatscale.
WewillcontinuetodefinegreenbuildingleadershipthroughLEED
version5,whichwillfurtheralignthebuiltenvironmenttothecriticalprioritiesoftoday,includingdecarbonization,ecosystemconservationandrestoration,andenhancedqualityoflife.
WehavedevelopedPERFORM,anewprogramdesignedtoprovideguidance,tools,andthird-partyverificationofperformance
improvementacrossentireportfolios,tohelporganizationsmeetsustainabilitygoalsandachievelastingimpact.
Goingforward,wewillcontinuetotrack,share,andlearnfrom

TheGlobal
SustainabilityMovement
TherootsofthegreenbuildingmovementextendwellbeforeUSGBC’s
establishment.Inthe1960s,conceptslikepassivedesignandnature-
integratedenvironmentaldesigngainedmomentum,settingthestageforthefollowingdecades.The1970smarkedkeydevelopments,withthefirstEarthDayin1970andtheenergycrisisof1973,eventsthatheightened
awarenessofenvironmentalresponsibility.Thismomentumcontinuedinthe1980s,withtheBrundtlandReportin1987formallyintroducingthe
ideaofsustainabledevelopmentandestablishingafoundationforongoingefforts.Conceptssuchasthe“zeroenergyhouse”emerged,servingasaprecursortotoday’snet-zerobuildingstandards.
USGBCwasestablishedin1993,atatimewhenenvironmental
responsibilityinthebuiltenvironmentwasbecomingmoreessential.
Buildingondecadesofprogressinsustainabledesign,ourvisionfor
buildingsbalancedpeople’swell-being,planetaryhealth,andeconomicprosperity.
In2002,theformationoftheWorldGreenBuildingCouncil(WorldGBC),theadoptionoftheMillenniumDevelopmentGoals,andthesigningoftheKyotoProtocolwerepivotalinacceleratingourmission.Later,the2015
ParisAgreementandalignmentwiththeUNSustainableDevelopmentGoals(SDGs)strengthenedourefforts,influencingthedevelopmentofLEEDversions4and4.1.
Today,LEEDv5lookstowardthefuture—centeringondecarbonization,qualityoflife,andecologicalconservation.

Atthecoreofourworkisthe
understandingthatbuildingsareaboutpeople.Climatechangeis
nolongeradistantthreat—it’shere,influencingeverymomentoftoday.
Climatechangemanifeststhroughextremeweather,risingtemperatures,andpublichealthcrises,impactingmillionsworldwide.Themostaffectedarethoseleastequippedtorespond:under-resourcedcommunities,elderlyresidents,children,andpeopleindevelopingregions.
AtUSGBC,werecognizebuildingsascriticalinfrastructureprotectingpeoplefromtheworstofclimateimpacts.ThroughLEED,weensurebuildingsareresilient,sustainable,anddesignedtosafeguardvulnerablepopulations.Ourdecarbonizationeffortsextendbeyondenergyefficiencytoincluderenewableenergy,reducedtransportationemissions,andlower-carbonbuildingmaterials.Byincorporatingbiodiversitystrategieslikegreenroofsandraingardens,LEEDalsorestoreslocalecosystemsandreducesfloodrisks,improvingoverallenvironmentalperformance.
Heatwaves:ProtectingCommunitiesfromRisingTemperatures
Asglobaltemperaturesrise,heatwavesintensifyandoccurmorefrequently.Densecitycentersandhistoricallyunderservedcommunitiesfaceincreasedrisks.LEED-certifiedbuildingsmaintainthermalcomfortthroughenergy-efficientHVACsystems,naturalventilation,andpassivecoolingtechniques.
By2050,globaltemperaturesareprojectedtoriseby2.7°F(1.5°C),intensifyingheatwaveimpacts.WHOreportsthatbetween2000and2019,489,000peoplediedannuallyfromheat-relatedcauses.From2030-2050,heatstressalonecouldcause250,000additionaldeathsyearlythroughheat-relatedillnesses,malnutrition,anddisease.

StormsandFlooding:BuildingResilienceAgainstExtremeWeather
Coastalregionsandflood-proneareasincreasinglyfacethreatsfromhurricanes,storms,andrisingsealevels.Floodsandstormsamplifypublichealthrisksbyspreadingwaterbornediseases,contaminatingwatersupplies,anddisruptingaccesstoessentialhealthcareservices.AccordingtotheWorldMeteorologicalOrganization,extremeweatherevents,includinghurricanes,floods,andstorms,haveincreasedby83%since2000.
LEEDemphasizesresiliencebyintegratingdesignstrategiesthatprotectbuildingsfromstormsurges,reinforcestructuralintegrity,andmanagestormwatereffectively.Ourgoalistoensurebuildingsserveasprotectivebarriersforcommunities,helpingthemwithstandextremeweathereventsandrecoverquickly.
