OnMay1,studentsatKentStateUniversityinKent,OhioprotestedagainsttheAmericaninvasionofCambodiaandwerecallingforanendtothewar.Thecampusprotestwaspeaceful,butemotionsgrewthroughouttheday,andriotssooneruptedinthetown'sstreetsthatnight.Inresponse,thegovernorsentNationalGuardtroopstotheKentStateUniversitycampustostoptheriotsandprotests.

Smallprotestscontinuedoverthenexttwodays,andthen,onthemorningofMay4,approximately2,000studentsgatheredinthecenterofcampustoprotestboththewarandthepresenceofsoldiersattheirschool.Thesoldiersorderedthestudentstodisperseandreturntotheirdorms.Whentheyrefused,thesoldiersbeganfiringteargasintothecrowd.
