itrelativelywarmanduniformintemperature.Butthe2019dipoledeepenedthis

well-mixedupperlayer;thethermocline(thesliceofoceanthatseparateswarm

upperwatersfromthecolddepths)hadbecomedeeperthannormal.Then,those

coralswereexposedtotemperaturesthatarenormallyfoundatthesurface.

Thisobservationsuggestsmesophoticreefselsewherecouldalsobebleaching.

Fortunately,thecoralsinthisstudyhadlargelyrecoveredtheircolorby2022,Foster
