Oneofthemostcommontypesofnonfiction,andonethatmanypeopleenjoyreading,

isstoriesaboutpeople,slives.Thesestoriesfallintothreegeneralcategories:

autobiography,memoir,andbiography.

Anautobiographyisthestoryofaperson,slifewrittenbyhimselforherself.

Oftenitbeginswiththeperson,searliestrecollectionsandendsinthepresent.

Autobiographywritersmaynotbeentirelyobjectiveinthewaytheypresent

themselves.However,theyofferthereaderagoodlookatthewaytheyareandwhat

makesthemthatway.PeopleasdiverseasBenjarminFranklinandHelenKellerhave

writtenautobiographies.1Otherwriters,suchasJamesJoyce,havewrittenthinly

fictionalizedaccountsoftheir1ives.Thesearenotautobiographies,buttheyare

veryclosetoit.

Memoirs,strictlyspeaking,areautobiographicalaccountsthatfocusasmuch

ontheeventsofthetimesasonthelifeoftheauthor.2Memoirwriterstypically

usetheseeventsasbackdropsfortheirlives.Theydescribethemindetailand

discusstheirimportance.Recently,though,thetermmemoirseemstobebecoming

interchangeablewithautobiography.Amemoirnowadaysmayormaynotdealwiththe

outsidewor1d.

Biographiesarefactualaccountsofsomeoneelse*s1ife.Inmanysenses,these

maybethehardestofthethreetypestowrite.Autobiographywritersknowtheevents

theywriteaboutbecausetheylivedthem.Butbiographywritershavetogather
