isstoriesaboutpeople,slives.Thesestoriesfallintothreegeneralcategories:
autobiography,memoir,andbiography.
Anautobiographyisthestoryofaperson,slifewrittenbyhimselforherself.
Oftenitbeginswiththeperson,searliestrecollectionsandendsinthepresent.
Autobiographywritersmaynotbeentirelyobjectiveinthewaytheypresent
themselves.However,theyofferthereaderagoodlookatthewaytheyareandwhat
makesthemthatway.PeopleasdiverseasBenjarminFranklinandHelenKellerhave
writtenautobiographies.1Otherwriters,suchasJamesJoyce,havewrittenthinly
fictionalizedaccountsoftheir1ives.Thesearenotautobiographies,buttheyare
veryclosetoit.
Memoirs,strictlyspeaking,areautobiographicalaccountsthatfocusasmuch
ontheeventsofthetimesasonthelifeoftheauthor.2Memoirwriterstypically
