ClearAirActOneoftheoldestenvironmentallawsoftheU.S.,aswellasthemost

far-reaching,thecostliest,andthemostcontroversial.Itwaspassed

in1970.

OzonedepletionAlayerofozoneinthestratospherepreventsmostultravioletand

otherhigh-energyradiation,whichisharmfultolife,from

penetratingtotheearth'ssurface.Someenvironmentalscientistsfear

thatcertainman-madepollutants,e.g.nitricoxide,CFCs

(Chlorofluorocarbons),etc.,mayinterferewiththedelicatebalance

ofreactionsthatmaintainstheozone'sconcentration,possibly

leadingtoadrasticdepletionofstratosphericozone.Thisisnow
