light-emittingdiodes(LED)mountedoneitherside.OneLEDsendsalightbeamtotheLEDonthe
otherside.Asthewheelsspinandaholerotatesby,thelightbeamgetsthroughtotheLEDon
theotherside.Butamomentlaterthelightbeamisblockeduntilthenextholeisinplace.The
LEDdetectsachangingpatternoflight,convertsthepatternintoanelectronicsignal,andsends
thesignaltothecomputerthroughwiresinacablethatgoesoutofthemousebody.Thiscableis
thetailthathelpsgivethemouseitsname.Thecomputerinterpretsthesignaltotellitwhereto
positionthecursoronthecomputerscreen.
Sofarwehaveonlydiscussedthebasiccomputermousethatmostofyouprobablyhaveor
haveused.Oneproblemwiththisdesignisthatthemousegetsdirtyasthebailrollsoverthe
surfaceandpicksupdirt.Eventuallyyouhavetocleanyourmouse.Theneweropticalmiceavoid
