WhentheS&ETeamwasordering

themasks,thevendorinsistedon

"deliveryuponpayment",yetaccordingtoDeloitte'sprocurementpolicy,a

vendorevaluationreportisrequiredforeverypurchaseandprepaymentisnotallowed.Oncethisissuewas

raisedtoConstant,shesaiddecisively,"Gothroughthespecialapproval

newlyconfirmedcasesand129newlysuspectedcasesofCOVID-19in

China.Thatsameday,MelissaWang,aConsultingPartnerfromDeloitteWesternRegionoffice,tookoffon

herfirstbusinesstripsincethepandemicbegan.

"WhileIwasfillingthebusinesstravel

applicationform,mycolleagueskept

askingwhetherIreallyhadtogo."

Melissarecallswithasmile."Myclienthadreturnedtotheirofficehalfa

monthago.Theyhadtocomplete

communicationandsign-offon

performancebythefirstquarter,andhadencounteredimplementation

challenges.Asakeypartofthesolution,itmadesenseforDeloittetobepresentandsolvetheseproblemsalongside

theclient.However,afterconsideringeveryone'ssafety,theteamdecideditshouldminimizetravelfrequency,

soIwentbymyselfandtheproject

imposedtravelrestrictionsduring

thisperiod,myinabilitytopresenttothemwouldhavestillaffectedwork

tosomeextent.Thiswasparticularlytrueinhumanresourcesconsulting,whichinvolvesalargeamountof

communication,andwherenot

allprojectworkcanbeconducted

remotely.Tominimizetheimpact,I

decidedtotravelbymyselfandbetheonlymemberoftheteamonsite."

In2018,LinsTangmadethedecisiontotransformhercareerandjoined

DeloitteasaMicrosoftCloudDevOpsengineer.

"PriortojoiningDeloitte,Ihadbeen

managingsoftwaretesting.However,IwasabletojointhefirmasaMicrosoftCloudDevOpsengineeratthe

forefrontoftechnology,"sherecalls."Friendsweresurprisedbymynew

position,asIwasabletoswitchfromabusiness-focusedcareertoatechnicalpath.Sincethereisahightechnical

knowledgerequirement,andasa

femalewithfewfoundationsincloudtechnology,itwasseenas'MissionImpossible'!"

Theirconcernsinonesensewere

legitimateasLinsfoundherself

surroundedbymalecolleaguesafterstartinghernewjob.Shewasone

ofjustfivefemalesinateamof30

developers,andhercolleagueswereallveryexperienceddevelopers,

whichinevitablyputpressureonher.Soonenough,however,shewasabletoturnherinsecuritiesintopositivemotivations:"I'vegrowntorealize

thatweeachhaveourstrengthsandweaknesses,forexample,mylearningandlanguageabilitiesarestronger

thanthoseofmanyofmypeers.Ontopofthis,mycolleagueshavebeen

extremelyproactiveinsharingtheir

knowledgeandexperiences,andIhavealwaysbeenabletonavigatethroughdifficultieswiththeirhelp."

Despiteherlackofcodingexperience,Linstookthechancetotrainin

Malaysia,afterwhichsheundertookaseriesofjob-specifictraining.Havingtakenpartinglobalprojectsfor

world.Sheisthankfulthattheynot

onlytaughtherhowtodocertain

confidentinmyjob,"shesays.
