Television—themostpervasiveandpersuasiveofmoderntechnologies,markedbyrapid

changeandgrowth—ismovingintoanewera,aneraofextraordinarysophisticationandversatility,

whichpromisestoreshapeourlivesandourworld.Itisanelectronicrevolutionofsorts,made

possiblebythemarriageoftelevisionandcomputertechnologies.

Theword“television”,derivedfromitsGreek(tele:distant)andLatin(vision:sight)roots,

canliterallybeinterpretedassightfromdistance.Verysimplyput,itworksinthisway:througha

sophisticatedsystemofelectronics,televisionprovidesthecapabilityofconvertinganimage

(focusedonaspecialphoto-conductiveplatewithinacamera)intoelectronicimpulses,whichcanbe

sentthroughawireofcable.Theseimpulses,whenfedintoareceiver(televisionset),canthenbe

electronicallyreconstitutedintothatsameimage.

Televisionismorethanjustanelectronicsystem,however.Itisameansofexpression,aswell

asavehicleforcommunication,andassuchbecomesapowerfultoolforreachingotherhuman

beings.

Thefieldoftelevisioncanbedividedintotwocategoriesdeterminedbyitsmeansof
