toothersintheorganization.Theseincludespeakingtothemdirectly,e-mailing,
telephoningorsendingamemo.Themostappropriatemethoddependsonexample,

appraisal,shouldbedoneface-to-face.
Oneofthemainproblemsforseniorexecutivesisthattheydonothavethetime
orresourcesneededtocommunicateeffectively.Inlargecompanies,forexample,
itisimpossibleforseniormanagerstomeetanddiscussprogresswitheachemployee
individually.Obviouslythistaskcanbedelegatedbutatthecostofcreatinga
gapbetweenseniormanagementandstaff.Asaresult,managersareoftenforcedto
useothermethodsofcommunication,likememosornotes,eveniftheyknowthese
arenotnecessarilythemostsuitablemeansofpassingonmessages.
Theuseoftechnology,suchase-mail,mobilephonesandnetworksystems,isspeeding
upcommunicationimmensely.However,thisdoesnotmeanthatmoreinvestmentin
technologyautomaticallyprovesbeneficial:systemcanbecomeoutdatedoremployees
maylackappropriatetraining.Therearemanycommunicationstoolsnowavailable
butafirmcannotaffordallofthem.Evenifitcould,itdoesnotactuallyneed
themall.Thepotentialgainsmustbeweighedupagainstthecosts,andfirmsshould
realizethatmorecommunicationdoesnotnecessarilymeanbettercommunication.
Asthenumberofpeopleinvolvedinanorganizationincrease,theuseofwritten
communicationrisesevenfaster.Insteadofaquickconversationtosortsomething
outnumerousmessagescanbepassedbackwardsandforward.Thiscanlendtoa
tremendousamountofpaperworkandisoftenlesseffectivethanfacetoface
communication.Whenyouareactuallytalkingtosomeoneyoucandiscussthingsuntil
youarehappytheyhaveunderstoodandfeedbackisimmediate.Withwrittenmessages,
however,youareneverquitesurehowitwillbereceived.Whatyouthinkyouhave

Theamountofwritteninformationgeneratedinlargeorganizationtodaycanlead
tocommunicationoverload.Somuchinformationisgatheredthatitgetsintheway
