HeisfamousforthelavishpartieshethrowseverySaturdaynight,butnooneknowswherehecomesfrom,whathedoes,orhowhemadehisfortune.HeappearsinChapter1,speaksuntilChapter3.ThereaderlearnsheisinlovewithDaisyinChapter4,hereunionswithDaisyinarainydayinChapter5.GatsbytellshischildhoodandpersonalhistoryinChapter6.TheproofofhiscriminaldealingsarisesinChapter7.HeiskilledinChapter8,andChapter9isabouthisfuneral.Gatsbycreateshishisowncharacter,evenchanginghisnamefromJamesGatztoJayGatsbytorepresenthisreinventionofhimself.AshisrelentlessquestforDaisydemonstrates,Gatsbyhasanextraordinaryabilitytotransformhishopesanddreamsintoability,thistalentforself-inventioniswhatgivesGatsbyhisqualityof“greatness”.Gatsbyisaninnocent,hopefulyoungman,heisaloyalandgood-heartedman.Hisoptimismandvitality-somethingabouthimseemsremarkablyhopeful,andthisbeliefinbrillianceofthefutureimpressesreaders.However,heislonelyandsensitivetohisstatus.Acutelyawareofhispoverty,Gatsbydevelopsapowerfulobsessionwithamassingwealthandstatus.DaisyBuchananDaisyisabeautifulyoungwomanfromLouisville,sheisNick'scousinandGatsby'slove.DaisypromisedtowaitforGatsby,butin1919shechosetomarryTom,ayoungmanfromasolid,aristocraticfamilywhocouldpromiseherawealthylifestyle.ToGatsby,Daisyrepresentstheparagonofperfection--shehastheauraofcharm,wealth,sophistication,grace,andaristocracythatattractedhimtoher.Inreality,sheisbeautifulandcharming,butalsofickle,shallow,bored,andsardonic.SheprovesherrealnaturewhenshechoosesTomoverGatsbyinChapter7,thenallowsGatsbytotaketheblameforkillingMyrtle.FinallyratherthanattendGatsby'sfuneral,DaisyandTommoveaway,leavingnoaddress.Daisyisinlovewithmoney,ease,andmaterialluxury.Sheiscapableofaffection,sheseemstoloveGatsby,butnotofsustainedloyaltyorcare.Sheisindifferenteventoherdaughter,seldomdiscussingher.SherepresentstheamoralvaluesofthearistocraticEastEgg.NickCarrawayNick,ayoungmanfromMinnesota,travelstoNewYorkin1922tolearnthebondbusiness.Heistolerant,open-minded,quiet,andagoodlistener,andasaresult,otherstendtotalktohimandtellhimtheirsecrets.Gatsby,inparticular,comestotrusthimandtreathimasaconfidant.Nickplaysaroleinsidethenarrative,heevidencesastronglymixedreactiontolifeontheEastCoast,onethatcreatsapowerfulinternalconflictthathedoesnotresolve.Ontheonehand,Nickisattractedtothefast-paced,fun-drivenlifestyleofNewYork.Ontheotherhand,hefindsthatlifestylegrotesqueanddamaging.
