andthenpersuadedtogiveoffitshydrogenondemand.

Theirinvention,whichtheynickname"powerpaste”,looksliketoothpaste.Its

mainingredientismagnesiumhydride,acompoundthat,whenintroducedtowater,

reactswithittoformhydrogenandmagnesiumhydroxide.Theescapedhydrogencan

thenberedirectedintoafuelcell,whereitreactswithoxygenfromtheairtogenerate

electricpower.Themagnesiumhydroxidewasteisemptiedfromthereactor

automatically.

DrVogfsschemeoffersseveraladvantagesoverbatteries,petrolandmore

conventionalwaysofhandlinghydrogen.Oneisthestorageofmoreenergythan

eitherbatteriesorpetrolcanmanage.Asecondiseaseofrefilling,whichissimplya

matterofswappinganemptycontainerofpasteforafullone,andtoppingupthe

water,whichisstoredinaseparatetank.Athirdadvantageisthat,unlikeabattery,

thepastedoesnotgraduallyloseitsstoredenergyifitisleftontheshelf.Moreover,

thepasteitselfisharmless,asarethereaction'sby-products.
