humans;itisalogicalconsequenceofthesimplefactthatthemachine

cannotachieveitsoriginalpurposeifitisdead.Soifwesendoutarobot

withthesingleinstructionoffetchingcoffee,itwillhaveastrongdesire

tosecuresuccessbydisablingitsownoffswitchorevenkillinganyonewho

Thepossibilityofenteringintoandlosingsuchamatchshould

concentratingthemindsofcomputerscientists.Someresearchersarguethat

wecansealthemachinesinsideakindoffirewall,usingthemtoanswer

difficultquestionsbutneverallowingthemtoaffecttherealworld.

Unfortunately,thatplanseemsunlikelytowork:wehaveyettoinventa

firewallthatissecureagainstordinaryhumans,letalonesuperintelligent

machines.

SolvingthesafetyproblemwellenoughtomoveforwardinAIseemstobe

possiblebutnoteasy.Thereareprobablydecadesinwhichtoplanforthe

arrivalofsuperintelligentmachines.Buttheproblemshouldnotbe

dismissedoutofhand,asithasbeenbysomeAIresearchers.Someargue

thathumansandmachinescancoexistaslongastheyworkinteams—yetthat

isnotpossibleunlessmachinessharethegoalsofhumans.Otherssaywecan
