TheEnglishareconsideredthefirstmodemsocietytodevelopswimmingasasport.By

1837,regularswimmingcompetitionswerebeingheldinLondon'ssixartificialpools,

organizedbytheNationalSwimmingSocietyinEngland.Asthesportgrewinpopularitymany

morepoolswerebuilt,andwhentheAmateurSwimmingAssociationofGreatBritainwas

organizedin1880,ithadmorethan300memberclubs.

In1896,swimmingbecameanOlympicsportformenwiththe100metersand1500

metersfreestylecompetitionsheldinopenwater.Soonafter,asswimminggainedpopularity,

morefreestyleeventswereadded,followedbythebackstroke,breaststroke,butterflyand

finally,theindividualmedley.

ThefirstmodernOlympicGameshadonlyfourswimmingevents,threeofthemfreestyle.

ThesecondOlympicsinParisin1900includedthreeunusualswimmingevents.Oneusedan

obstaclecourse;anotherwasatestofunderwaterswimmingendurance;thethirdwasa4,000-

metreevent,thelongestcompetitiveswimmingeventever.Noneofthethreewaseverusedin

theOlympicsagain.
