abigimpactontheirlocalenvironmentasaresultoftheiractivity

isandthesubtletiesofit.Whatwefoundisthatdespitebeing
predators,theirpresencecanalsoleadtoanincreaseindensityand
diversityofotheranimalgroups4.Theygenuinelyplayakeyrolein
thelocalenvironment,havingabiginfluenceonthegrasslandfood

Thestudy,carriedoutinGermany,studiedtheimpactofthe
presenceofdifferentcombinationsanddensitiesofblackgardenants
andcommonredants,bothspecieswhichcanbefoundacrossEurope,
includingintheUK.Itfoundthatalowdensityofantsinanarea
increasedthediversityanddensityofotheranimalsinthelocalarea,
particularlythedensityofherbivoresanddecomposers.Athigher
densitiesantshadnoortheoppositeeffect,showingthatpredation
iscounteractingthepositiveinfluence.
DrFrankvanVeen,anotherauthoronthestudy,said:"Whatwefind
isthattheimpactofantsonsoilnutrientlevelshasapositiveeffect
onanimalgroupsatlowlevels,butasthenumberofantsincreases,
