orbuildingnuclearreactors.Bythat,heseemstomeanthat

everythingtaughtatthepublicexpenseshouldhaveadirect,

practicalapplicationthatwillbenefitsocietyandtheeconomy.

ItisextremelyalarmingthatthemaninchargeofBritain's

educationsystemshouldthinkinthisnarrow-minded,

half-wittedway.Thetruth,ofcourse,isthatallacademic

disciplinesbenefitsocietyandtheeconomy,whetherina

directandobviouswayornot.Theyteachstudentstothink一to

processinformationandtodistinguishbetweenwhatis

importantandunimportant,trueanduntrue.Aboveall,a

countryinwhichacademicresearchandintelligentideasare

allowedtoflourishisclearlyamuchmoreinteresting,

stimulatingandenjoyableplacethanonewithout“ornaments”,
