AutomotiveSoftwareDevelopmentReport!
Thisyear,400automotivedevelopmentprofessionalsaroundtheworldprovidedresponsestoquestionsregardingcurrentpracticesandemergingtrendswithintheautomotivesoftwareindustry.
Withthecontinuedgrowthinthedevelopmentofelectricandsemi-autonomousvehicles,aswellasthesubsequentincreaseinsoftwarecomponents,ourfindingscontinuetoshowthatsecurityisasimportantassafetyasamajorconcern.Thisisreflectedintheincreasingrequirementstocomplywithsecuritystandards.
Thecurrentstateoftheglobaleconomy(andrelatedinflationandsupplychainconditions)alsomeansthatmaintainingindustrycompetitivenessandmaximizingexistingresourcesareofgreatimportancetoautomotivesoftware
developersin2023.Aspartofthesestrategies,ourfindingsshowthatarecurringchallengeforautomotivedevelopersthisyearishiringnewtalent,aswellastrainingexistingtalentonsafetyandsecuritybestpractices.
Bymaximizingresourcesandtalent,automotivecompaniescanremaincompetitiveinanever-changingmarketinwhichmorestartupsandestablishedorganizationsaredevelopingelectricandsemi-autonomousvehiclesandcomponentsthaneverbefore.

Ofallthemarketconditionsthathavemostimpactedautomotiveorganizations,theglobaleconomywasaleadingconcernamongrespondents(28%).Relatedconditionsofinflation,theshifttoaremoteorhybridworkforce,supplychainchallenges,andchipshortageswerealsorankedashighconcerns(each15%).
Notable“other”responsesincluded“education—workforcedevelopment”and“risingsalaryfordevelopers.”Thisfocusonhiring,retaining,andeducatingtoptalentisinterestingbecause,asweseeinthenextsection,notonlydid17%ofrespondentschoose“educatingexistingtalent”asatopchallenge,butan“other”responsealsomentionedtheemphasisonhiringnewtalent.

“maintainingindustrycompetitiveness”(38%)and“maximizingexistingresources”(26%).Seventeenpercentof
respondentsalsoexpressedthat“educatingexistingtalent”isachallengetheyarefocusingonin2023,followedby“mitigatingsoftwarerecalls”(10%)and“makingcomplianceeasier”(6%).

Thisyearsawanoticeableshiftintopsafetyconcerns,withthetopconcernbeinglesscenteredaroundcustomer
expectationsforcompliancetoacodingstandardandmoredirectedtodemonstratingfunctionalsafetycompliance.Respondentswhostated“itisdifficult(andtime-consuming)tofulfilleveryISO26262requirement”increasedslightlyfrom45%to47%.Meanwhile,“ourcustomersexpectustocomplywithasafecodingstandard”decreasedfrom

“Ourtestingeffortsarenotexhaustive—andwedonothavetimetotestmore”remainedthesameoverlastyearat25%.However,“peercodereviewsareinconsistent”decreasedby15%.
Theseresultsindicatethatinternalcodereviewprocessesarebecomingmorestreamlined,andthereforereducingthecomplexityofthecodebase,andalsothattheprocesseshavetobeupdatedtoincludecomplyingwithstandards.
