Thisyear,400automotivedevelopmentprofessionalsaroundtheworldprovidedresponsestoquestionsregardingcurrentpracticesandemergingtrendswithintheautomotivesoftwareindustry.

Withthecontinuedgrowthinthedevelopmentofelectricandsemi-autonomousvehicles,aswellasthesubsequentincreaseinsoftwarecomponents,ourfindingscontinuetoshowthatsecurityisasimportantassafetyasamajorconcern.Thisisreflectedintheincreasingrequirementstocomplywithsecuritystandards.

Thecurrentstateoftheglobaleconomy(andrelatedinflationandsupplychainconditions)alsomeansthatmaintainingindustrycompetitivenessandmaximizingexistingresourcesareofgreatimportancetoautomotivesoftware

Ofallthemarketconditionsthathavemostimpactedautomotiveorganizations,theglobaleconomywasaleadingconcernamongrespondents(28%).Relatedconditionsofinflation,theshifttoaremoteorhybridworkforce,supplychainchallenges,andchipshortageswerealsorankedashighconcerns(each15%).

Notable“other”responsesincluded“education—workforcedevelopment”and“risingsalaryfordevelopers.”Thisfocusonhiring,retaining,andeducatingtoptalentisinterestingbecause,asweseeinthenextsection,notonlydid17%ofrespondentschoose“educatingexistingtalent”asatopchallenge,butan“other”responsealsomentionedtheemphasisonhiringnewtalent.

Automotiveorganizationsarefacinguniquechallengesthisyear.Respondentsweremostconcernedabout

“maintainingindustrycompetitiveness”(38%)and“maximizingexistingresources”(26%).Seventeenpercentof

respondentsalsoexpressedthat“educatingexistingtalent”isachallengetheyarefocusingonin2023,followedby“mitigatingsoftwarerecalls”(10%)and“makingcomplianceeasier”(6%).

“Other”leadingchallengeanswersincludedcomplianceconcernsaswellas“hiringnewtalenttomeettheupcomingprojectdemands,”highlightingtheimportanceofretainingexistingtalentandbringinginnewtalent,inadditionto

educatingthem.

30%ofthosesurveyedcitedsafetyastheirtopconcerninautomotivesoftwaredevelopment.Whencomparedtolastyear’sreport,thereareseveralnotableshifts.

Thisyearsawanoticeableshiftintopsafetyconcerns,withthetopconcernbeinglesscenteredaroundcustomer

expectationsforcompliancetoacodingstandardandmoredirectedtodemonstratingfunctionalsafetycompliance.Respondentswhostated“itisdifficult(andtime-consuming)tofulfilleveryISO26262requirement”increasedslightlyfrom45%to47%.Meanwhile,“ourcustomersexpectustocomplywithasafecodingstandard”decreasedfrom

46%in2022to34%in2023.ThisdecreasemaydemonstrateshiftingexpectationsthatsuppliersmeetISO26262requirements,ratherthanjustcomplyingtoacodingstandard.

Inparallel,the“[struggle]toensuresafetyacrossthesupplychain”increasedby111%foratotalof19%.Astherearemoresuppliersfortheincreasednumberofcomponents,coordinatingsafetyrequirementscanbecomeachallenge,especiallywhensomesuppliersarenewtothisarea.

Thetopconcernregarding“unauthorizedaccesstoon-board/off-boardsystems”in2023sawamarkedincreaseof66%foratotalof53%.

Becausesecurebestpracticesarenowanintegralpartofthesoftwaredevelopmentlifecycle,otherconcernshavelargelybeenreduced.Therefore,“unauthorizedaccesstoon-board/off-boardsystems”islikelynowtheonlymajorconcern.
