lower-pitchedsounds.Inall,thescientistscreatedindividualaudiodescriptionsfor20molecules.Thentheycombinedthe
soundsofeachmoleculepresentinasawfly'ssmelltoconstructtheinsect'ssoundtrack.Ifamoleculewasofhigherproportion
inanemission,theyassigneditahighervolume.Insuchacase,thesmalleramoleculeis,thehigheritspitchwillbe;andthe
highertheproportionofamoleculeis,thehigheritsvolumewillbe.
Totestouttheaudiodescriptionstheycreated,BoeveandGiotexaminedpeople'sreactionstothesoundtracksand
comparedthemtoants'reactionstotheoriginalsmells.Theyplayedthe16emissionsoundtracksandthe20moleculesounds
throughspeakerstoabout50studyparticipants.Thenthescientistsmeasuredhowfarpeoplebackeduptogettoa
"comfortableposition^^awayfromthenoise.Mostofthestudyvolunteerstoldtheresearchersthatthehighpitch,aswellas
thehighvolume,waswhatmadethemwithdraw."Antsandvolunteersmovedawayfromachemicalanditsmatching
soundtrackrespectively,theresearcherswrote.
Boevesaidhehopedtheprocesswouldgiveotherzoologistsanewwaytocomparesawflies'chemicaldefenseswith
