Foreword

Thisdocument(EN13780:2003)hasbeenpreparedbyTechnicalCommitteeCEN/TC248"Textilesandtextileproducts",thesecretariatofwhichisheldbyBSI.

ThisEuropeanStandardshallbegiventhestatusofanationalstandard,eitherbypublicationofanidenticaltextorbyendorsement,atthelatestbyAugust2003,andconflictingnationalstandardsshallbewithdrawnatthelatestbyAugust2003.

1Scope

ThisEuropeanStandardspecifiesamethodfordeterminingthelongitudinalshearstrengthofatouchandclosefastener.

2Normativereferences

3Termsanddefinitions

ForthepurposesofthisEuropeanStandard,thefollowingtermsanddefinitionsapply:

4Principle

Matedcomponenttapesofatouchandclosefastenerareseparatedataconstantratesuchthattheseparationoccursprogressivelyalongtheclosureinadirectionparalleltothelengthofthetapesformingtheclosureandintheplaneoftheclosure.

5Apparatus

5.1Constantrateofextensiontensiletestingmachine,asspecifiedinENISO7500-1,connectedtoacomputer,viaasuitableinterface,capableofrecordingdataatarateofatleast20pointspersecond.

5.2Metalroller,madeofphosphor-bronze,withadiameterof(100±2)mm(seeFigure2),whichshallbeselectedinaccordancewithTable1.

NOTEThemostimportantparametersfortherollerareitsdiameterandmass.Itswidthshouldbechoseninaccordance

withthespecificdensityofthephosphor-bronzeusedinitsmanufacture.

5.3Setofforkswithahandle(seeFigure3)whichengagesthemetalroller(5.2)andallowstherollertobemovedwithoutanyextradownforcebeingapplied(seeFigure4).

6Testspecimens

Cut4testspecimensofbothmaleandfemalecomponentsatleast100mmlongandmarkeachwithan"X"atoneendanda"Y"attheotherend,suchthateachtestspecimenofliketapeismarkedidentically.

7Conditioning

Conditionthetestspecimensforaminimumof24hinaccordancewiththestandardtemperateatmospherefortestingasspecifiedinEN20139.Theclosingofthetestspecimensandthetestingofthetouchandclosefastenersshallalsotakeplaceundertheseconditions.

8Procedure

8.1Combinationsofclosure

Make4closuresintotal,1closureeachbeingmadeasperthecombinationsshowninFigure1.

8.2Methodofclosure

Selectthelengthofoverlapinaccordancewiththefollowingtable:

50mmforfastenersystemscomprisedofwovenhooktapeandwovenlooptape;

20mmforfastenersystemscomprisedofeitherwovenorknittedmushroomtapeandknittedlooptape;

20mmforfastenersystemscomprisedofaplasticmaletapeandknittedlooptape;

50mmforfastenersystemsnotlistedhereabove,butintheeventthattensilefailureoccurstoeitherofthetapesduringtesting,theoverlapshouldbereducedto20mm.

Makeeachclosureasfollows:

Placethemaletapeonaflatsurfacewiththepileuppermostandthenplacethefemaletapeontopwiththepilefacingdownwardssothatonlytheselectedlengthofoverlaptogetherwiththeoverallwidthmakeaclosure,usingminimalhandpressure.

Traversethemetalroller(5.2)atarateofapproximately200mm/salongthetapesinonedirection,thenimmediatelytraverseintheoppositedirection,thenturnthematingtapesover.

Repeattheprocedureuntiltherollerhastraversedthematingtapes5timesineachdirectioni.e.atotalof10times.

Takecarethatthecentreofgravityoftherollerdoesnotdeviatefromthecentrelineofthetapesduringthisoperation.

Takecarethattherollercoverstheentirewidthofthematingtapes.

NOTEThetapesareturnedovertominimisecurvature.

8.3Conductthetestforeachclosure

Setupthetensiletestingmachine(5.1)suchthatthejawsare100mmapart.

Mountthecombinedtestspecimenintothejawsofthetensiletestingmachine(5.1)suchthatthefreeendofthefemaletapeisintheupperjawandthefreeendofthemaletapeisinthelowerjaw,takingcaretoalignthetestspecimeninorderthattheforceappliedisuniformlydistributedacrossthewidthoftheclosure.

Setthetensilemachineinmotionataconstantrateofjawseparationof(100±10)mm/min.Recordforceagainstjawseparation,untileithertheclosurehasbeenseparatedoroneofthetapeshasundergonetensilefailure.Recordthemodeoffailure.

9Calculationandexpressionofresults

9.1Intheeventthatatensilefailureoccurs,thenthebreakingforceshallbeconsideredastheforcerequiredtosheartheclosure.

9.2Calculatetheeffectiveareaofclosure,bymultiplyingtheeffectivewidthoftheclosurebythelengthoftheoverlapandexpresstheresultinsquarecentimetres.

9.3Foreachcombinationcalculatethelongitudinalshearstrengthbydividingthemaximumforcerequiredtosheartheclosurebytheeffectiveareaoftheclosureandexpresstheresultinnewtonspersquarecentimetre.

9.4Calculatethemeanlongitudinalshearstrengthoftheclosurebycalculatingthearithmeticmeanofthelongitudinalshearstrengthsofthe4combinations.
