eprotuberanceontheCH1BNCandpushtoconnect;then,turntorighttolocktheprobeinplace;afterthat,connecttheprobetipandreferenceleadtothePROBECOMPconnectors.Thereisamarkonthepanel:ProbeCOMP~2V@1KHz.CH1:CH1:toconnectwiththeprobePROBECOMPObservethewaveformPresstheAUTOSETbuttonandyoushouldseewithinafewsecondsasquarewaveofabout2Vpeak-to-peakat1kHzinthedisplay.PresstheCH1MENUbuttontwicetoremoveChannel1.PushtheCH2MENUbuttonandrepeatStep2andStep3toobserveChannel2.ProbeExaminationSafetyWhenusingtheprobe,keepyourfingersbehindtheguardontheprobebodytoavoidelectricshock.Donottouchmetallicportionsoftheprobeheadwhileitisconnectedtoavoltagesource.Connecttheprobetotheoscilloscopeandconnectthegroundterminaltogroundbeforeyoustartanymeasurements.UseofProbeCheckWizardEverytimeyouconnectaprobetoaninputchannel,youshouldusetheprobecheckwizardtoverifythatthisprobeisoperatingcorrectly.Therearetwowaystodothis:Usetheverticalmenu(forexample,pushtheCH1MENUbutton)tosettheProbeoptionattenuationfactor.PresstheUTILITY->F6->F6->F6->PROBECHECKbuttontousetheProbeCheckWizardandconfiguretheprobeoptionattenuationfactorproperlyfollowingmenuprompts.ManualProbeCompensationUponthefirstconnectionofaprobeandaninputchannel,youshouldmanuallyperformthisadjustmenttomatchtheprobetotheinputchannel.Uncompensatedormiscompensatedprobesmayleadtoerrorsorfaultsinmeasurement.Toadjusttheprobecompensation,followthestepsbelow.SettheProbeoptionattenuationinthechannelmenuto10X.Settheswitchontheprobeto10XandconnecttheprobetoChannel1ontheoscilloscope.Ifyouusetheprobehook-tip,ensureitisfirmlyinsertedontotheprobe.AttachtheprobetiptothePROBECOMP~2V@1KHzconnectorandthereferenceleadtothePROBECOMPGroundconnector.DisplaythechannelandthenpresstheAUTOSETbutton.Checktheshapeofthedisplayedwaveform.CompensatedCompensatedcorrectlyOvercompensatedUndercompensatedIfnecessary,useanonmetallicscrewdrivertoadjustthevariablecapacityofyourprobeuntiltheshapeofthewaveformturnstobethesameastheabovefigure.Repeatthisstepasnecessary.Seethefigurebelowforthewayofadjustment.ProbeAttenuationSettingProbesareofvariousattenuationfactorswhichaffecttheverticalscaleofthesignal.TheProbeCheckfunctionisusedtoverifyiftheProbeattenuationoptionmatchestheattenuationoftheprobe.AsanalternativemethodtoProbeCheck,youcanpushaverticalmenubutton(suchastheCH1MENUbutton)andselecttheProbeoptionthatmatchestheattenuationfactorofyourprobe.MakesurethattheAttenuationswitchontheprobematchestheProbeoptionintheoscilloscope.Switchsettingsare1Xand10X.WhentheAttenuationswitchissetto1X,theprobelimitsthebandwidthoftheoscilloscopeto6MHz.Tousethefullbandwidthoftheoscilloscope,besuretosettheswitchto10X.SelfCalibrationTheselfcalibrationroutinehelpsoptimizetheoscilloscopesignalpathformaximummeasurementaccuracy.Youcanruntheroutineatanytimebutshouldalwaysrunitiftheambienttemperaturechangesby5℃ormore.Foramoreaccuratecalibration,pleasepowerontheoscilloscopeandwaitfor20minutesTocompensatethesignalpath,disconnectanyprobesorcablesfromthefront-panelinputconnectors.Then,pushtheUTILITYbutton,selecttheSelfCalibrationoptionandfollowthedirectionsonthescreen..MainFeatureDescriptionMainFeatureDescriptionThischapterprovidessomegeneralinformationthatyouneedtolearnbeforeusinganoscilloscope.Itcontains:1.Oscilloscopesetup2.Trigger3.Dataacquisition4.Waveformscalingandpositioning5.WaveformmeasurementOscilloscopeSetupWhileoperatingtheoscilloscope,youmayoftenusethreefeatures:Autoset,savingasetupandrecallingasetup.Hereinaftertheyareintroducedonebyone.Autoset:Thisfunctioncanbeusedtoadjustthehorizontalandverticalscalesoftheoscilloscopeautomaticallyandsetthetriggercoupling,type,position,slope,levelandmode,etc.,toacquireastablewaveformdisplay.SavingaSetup:Bydefault,theoscilloscopewillsavethesetupeachtimebeforebeingclosed,andautomaticallyrecallthesetuponcebeingturnedon.(Note:Ifyoumodifythesetup,pleasewaitformorethan5secondsbeforeturningofftheoscilloscopetoensuretheproperstorageofnewsettings.)Youcansave10settingspermanentlyintheoscilloscopeandresetthemasnecessary.RecallingaSetup:Theoscilloscopecanrecallanyofyoursavedsetupsorthedefaultfactorysetup.DefaultSetup:Theoscilloscopeispresetfornormaloperationswhenitisshippedfromthefactory.Thisisthedefaultsetup.Youmayrecallthissetupatanytimeforyourrequirements.Toviewthedefaultsettings,refertoSection5.6.3.TriggerThetriggerdetermineswhentheoscilloscopebeginstoacquiredataanddisplayawaveform.Onceatriggerisproperlysetup,theoscilloscopecanconvertunstabledisplaysorblankscreenstomeaningfulwaveforms.Hereintroducesomebasicconceptsabouttrigger.TriggerSource:Thetriggercanbegeneratedwithmultiplesources.Themostcommononeistheinputchannel(alternativebetweenCH1,CH2,CH3andCH2).Whethertheinputsignalisdisplayedornot,itcantriggernormaloperations.AlsothetriggersourcecanbeanysignalconnectedtoanexternaltriggerchannelortheACpowerline(onlyforEdgetriggers).ThesourcewiththeACpowerlineshowsthefrequencyrelationshipbetweenthesignalandtheACcommercialpower.TriggerType:Theoscilloscopehassixtypesoftriggers:Edge,Video,PulseWidth,Slope,OvertimeandAlter.EdgeTriggerusestheanalogordigitaltestcircuitsfortriggering.Ithappenswhentheinputtriggersourcecrossesaspecifiedlevelinaspecifieddirection.VideoTriggerperformsafieldorlinetriggerthroughstandardvideosignals.PulseWidthTriggercantriggernormalorabnormalpulsesthatmeettriggerconditions.SlopeTriggerusestheriseandfalltimesontheedgeofsignalfortriggering.OvertimeTriggerhappensaftertheedgeofsignalreachesthesettime.AlterTrigger,asafeatureofanalogoscilloscopes,givesstabledisplaysofsignalsattwodifferentfrequencies.MainlyitusesaspecificfrequencytoswitchbetweentwoanalogchannelsCH1andCH2sothatthechannelswillgenerateAltertriggersignalsthroughthetriggercircuitry.TriggerMode:YoucanselecttheAutoorNormalmodetodefinehowtheoscilloscopeacquiresdatawhenitdoesnotdetectatriggercondition.AutoModeperformstheacquisitionfreelyinabsenceofvalidtrigger.Itallowsthegenerationofuntriggeredwaveformswiththetimebasesetto80ms/divorslower.NormalModeupdatesthedisplayedwaveformsonlywhentheoscilloscopedetectsavalidtriggercondition.Beforethisupdate,theoscilloscopestilldisplaystheoldwaveforms.Thismodeshallbeusedwhenyouwanttoonlyviewtheeffectivelytriggeredwaveforms.Inthismode,theoscilloscopedisplayswaveformsonlyafterthefirsttrigger.Toperformasinglesequenceacquisition,pushtheSINGLESEQbutton.TriggerCoupling:TriggerCouplingdetermineswhichpartofthesignalwillbedeliveredtothetriggercircuit.Thiscanhelptoobtainastabledisplayofthewaveform.Tousetriggercoupling,pushtheTRIGMENUbutton,selectanEdgeorPulsetrigger,andthenselectaCouplingoption.TriggerPosition:Thehorizontalpositioncontrolestablishesthetimebetweenthetriggerpositionandthescreencenter.SlopeandLevel:TheSlopeandLevelcontrolshelptodefinethetrigger.TheSlopeoptiondetermineswhetherthetriggerpointisontherisingorfallingedgeofasignal.Toperformthetriggerslopecontrol,presstheTRIGMENUbutton,selectanEdgetrigger,andusetheSlopebuttontoselectrisingorfalling.TheTRIGGERLEVELknobcontrolsthetriggerpointisonwhichpositionoftheedge.TriggerslopecanberisingorfallingTriggerslopecanberisingorfallingRisingEdgeFallingEdgeTriggerlevelcanbeadjustedverticallyDataAcquisitionWhenyouacquireananalogsignal,theoscilloscopewillconvertitintoadigitalone.Therearetwokindsofacquisition:Real-timeacquisitionandEquivalentacquisition.Thereal-timeacquisitionhasthreemodes:Normal,PeakDetect,andAverage.Theacquisitionrateisaffectedbythesettingoftimebase.Normal:Inthisacquisitionmode,theoscilloscopesamplesthesignalinevenlyspacedintervalstoestablishthewaveform.Thismodeaccuratelyrepresentssignalsinmosttime.However,itdoesnotacquirerapidvariationsintheanalogsignalthatmayoccurbetweentwosamples,whichcanresultinaliasingandmaycausenarrowpulsestobemissed.Insuchcases,youshouldusethePeakDetectmodetoacquiredata.PeakDetect:Inthisacquisitionmode,theoscilloscopegetsthemaximumandminimumvaluesoftheinputsignalovereachsampleintervalandusesthesevaluestodisplaythewaveform.Inthisway,theoscilloscopecanacquireanddisplaythosenarrowpulsesthatmayhaveotherwisebeenmissedinNormalmode.However,noisewillappeartobehigherinthismode.Average:Inthisacquisitionmode,theoscilloscopeacquiresseveralwaveforms,averagesthem,anddisplaystheresultingwaveform.Youcanusethismodetoreducerandomnoise.EquivalentAcquisition:Thiskindofacquisitioncanbeutilizedforperiodicsignals.Incasetheacquisitionrateistoolowwhenusingthereal-timeacquisition,theoscilloscopewilluseafixedratetoacquiredatawithastationarytinydelayaftereachacquisitionofaframeofdata.AfterrepeatingthisacquisitionforNtimes,theoscilloscopewillarrangetheacquiredNframesofdatabytimetomakeupanewframeofdata.Thenthewaveformcanberecovered.ThenumberoftimesNisrelatedtotheequivalentacquisitionrate.TimeBase:Theoscilloscopedigitizeswaveformsbyacquiringthevalueofaninputsignalatdiscretepoints.Thetimebasehelpstocontrolhowoftenthevaluesaredigitized.UsetheSEC/DIVknobtoadjustthetimebasetoahorizontalscalethatsuitsyourpurpose.WaveformScalingandPositioningThedisplayofwaveformsonthescreencanbechangedbyadjustingtheirscaleandposition.Oncethescalechanges,thewaveformdisplaywillincreaseordecreaseinsize.Oncethepositionchanges,thewaveformwillmoveup,down,right,orleft.Thechannelreferenceindicator(locatedontheleftofthegraticule)identifieseachwaveformonthescreen.Itpointstothegroundlevelofthewaveformrecord.VerticalScaleandPosition:Theverticalpositionofawaveformcanbechangedbymovingitupanddownonthescreen.Tocomparedata,youmayalignawaveformoveranother.WhenyoupushtheVOLTS/DIVbuttontochangetheverticalscaleofawaveform,thewaveformdisplaywillcontractorexpandverticallytothegroundlevel.HorizontalScaleandPosition:PretriggerInformationYoucanadjusttheHORIZONTALPOSITIONcontroltoviewwaveformdatabeforethetrigger,afterthetrigger,orsomeofeach.Whenyouchangethehorizontalpositionofawaveform,youareactuallychangingthetimebetweenthetriggerpositionandthescreencenter.Forexample,ifyouwanttofindoutthecauseofaglitchinyourtestcircuit,youshouldtriggerontheglitchandmakethepretriggerperiodlongenoughtocapturedatabeforetheglitch.Thenyoucananalyzethepretriggerdataandperhapsfindthecause.YouareallowedtochangethehorizontalscaleofallthewaveformsbyturningtheSEC/DI
