Recently,aresearchonhowanewvirtualreality(VR)experienceeducatedprimarychildrenaboutthefiredisasterswasdone.ItwasdevelopedbytheUniversityofSouthAustralia,aimingtoeducatechildrentolearnhowtobesaferinafire.

Focusingonchildrenaged10-12years,thenewVRexperiencepresentsasituationwherechildrenaretaskedtolookafterafriend’sdogjustbeforeafireeventbeginstounfold.Theyparticipateinaseriesofproblem-solvingactivitiestohelpsaveandprotectthemselvesandthedog.

Thefindingsshowedthatmorethan80percentofchildrenreportedthattheyfeltmoreconfidenttocalmlyevaluatetheoptionsandmakewisedecisionstoprotectthemselvesfromafire.Thisisespeciallysignificantconsideringthat91percentofparticipantsoriginallylackedanyknowledgeoffires,andthat67percenthadsaidthattheyweretooyoungtomakesafetydecisionsinafire.

Theresearchersbelievedsuchimmersive(沉浸式的)VRexperienceshadrealpotentialtoengage,educateandempowertheyoung.“Aschildrenbornindigitaltimes,theyareengagedbysuchtechnologyandtheycanexperienceeventsrealisticallyyetwithinthesafeenvironment,”saidDeleneWeber,oneoftheresearchers.“Well-designedVRcanprovideanopportunityforchildrentoapplynewlyacquiredknowledge,strengthentheirlearntconcepts,andenableimmediatefeedback—allincrediblyvaluablelearningtools.”

Meanwhile,becausechildrenhavefewerlifeexperiences,aren’tasphysicallystrong,andarelesslikelytohavelearnedmuchaboutfiresafety,they’reoftenmostatrisk.Yetthecapacityforchildrentocontributetofiresafetyattheirhouseholdshouldnotbeunderestimated.
