……TheClockTowerisaturretclockstructureatthenorth-easternendoftheHousesofParliamentbuildinginWestminster,London,England.ItispopularlyknownasBigBen,butthisnameisactuallyanicknamefortheclock‘smainbell.ThetowerhasalsobeenreferredtoasSt.Stephen’sTowerorTheTowerofBigBen,inreferencetoitsbell.◆Structure◆Reliability◆CultureThetowerwasraisedasapartofCharlesBarry'sdesignforanewpalace,aftertheoldPalaceofWestminsterwasdestroyedbyfireonthenightofOctober16,1834.ThetowerisdesignedintheVictorianGothicstyle,andis96.3metershigh.StructureThefirst61metersofthestructureistheclocktower,consistingofbrickwork

withstonecladding;theremainderofthetower'sheightisaframedspire

ofcastiron.Thetowerisfoundedona15by15meterraft,madeof3-metrethickconcrete,atadepth

of7metersbelowgroundlevel.Thefourclockfacesare55metersaboveground.Duetogroundconditionspresentsinceconstruction,thetowerleans

slightlytothenorth-west,byroughly

220millimeters.Duetothermal

effectsitoscillatesannually

byafewmillimeterseastandwest.◆Clockfaces◆Themainbell◆OtherbellsClockfacesTheclockfaceswereoncelargeenoughtoallowtheClockTowertobethelargestfour-facedclockintheworld.Theclockmechanismitselfwascompletedby1854,butthetowerwasnotfullyconstructeduntilfouryearslaterin1858.TheclockanddialsweredesignedbyAugustusPugin.DuringWorldWarII,thePalaceofWestminsterwashitbyGermanbombing,destroyingtheHouseofCommonsandcausingdamagetothetower'swesternclockface.返回ThemainbellThemainbell,officiallyknownastheGreatBell,isthelargestbellinthetowerandpartoftheGreatClockofWestminster.ThebellisbetterknownbythenicknameBigBen.ThenameBigBenwasfirstgiventoa14.5tonne(16ton)hourbell.Thebellwasneverofficiallynamed,butthelegendonitrecordsthatthecommissionerofworks,SirBenjaminHall,wasresponsiblefortheorder.AnothertheoryisthatthebellmayhavebeennamedafterheavyweightboxerBenjaminCauntwhowaspopularatthetime.There'salsoastorythatthebellwastobecalled"Victoria"inhonorofQueenVictoria,buttheceremonialspeecheswentonsolongthatsomejokershoutedout"OhjustcallitBigBenandhavedonewithit!"andthenamestuck返回OtherbellsAlongwiththemainbell,thebelfryhousesfourquarterbellswhichplaytheWestminsterQuartersonthequarterhours.ThefourquarterbellsareGsharp,Fsharp,E,andB.Becausethelowbell(B)isstrucktwic
