maybefreed.BoardingAirForceOneinLasVegas,thePresidentsaid,"There's

nowaytotellrightnow.We'vebeenworkingonthat.We'vehadheart-breaking

disappointments."

Mr.ReaganwasinLasVegascampaigningforRepublicancandidate,JimSantini,

whoisrunningbehindDemocrat,HarryReed.

InMozambiquetodayanewpresidentwaschosentoreplaceSamoraMachel

whodiedinaplanecrashtwoweeksago.NPR'sJohnMadisonreports:"The

choiceofthe130-memberCentralCommitteeoftherulingFRELIMOPartywas

announcedonMozambiqueradiothisevening.HeisJoaquimChissano,

Mozambique'sForeignMinister,No.3intheParty.Chissano,whoisforty-seven,

Germany.Twenty-fourhoursearlier,JacobsenwasreleasedinBeirutbyIslamic

Jihad.Butthisremainsamystery:whatpreciselyledtohisfreedom?Jacobsen

willspendthenextseveraldaysintheUSairforcefacilityinWiesbadenfora

medicalexamination.DiedreBarberreports.

Afterpreliminarymedicalcheckupstoday,DavidJacobsen'sdoctorsaidhewas

tiredbutphysicallyinverygoodcondition.USairforcehospitalcommander,

CharlesMoffitt,saidinamedicalbriefingthisafternoonthatJacobsenhadlost

littleweightandseemedextremelyfit.Hejokedthathewouldnotliketotakeup

Jacobsen'schallengetoreportersearlierinthedaytoasix-milejogaroundthe

airport.Despitehisobviousfatigue,Jacobsenspenttheafternoonbeing

examinedbyhospitaldoctors.Hewasalsoseenbyamemberofthespecial

stress-managementteamsentfromWashington.ColonelMoffittsaidthatafteran

initialevaluationitseemsasifJacobsencopedextremelywellwiththestresses

ofhiscaptivity.Hesaidtherewasalsonoevidenceatthispointthatthe

fifty-five-year-oldhospitaldirectorhadbeentorturedorphysicallyabused.

Jacobsenseemedveryalert,askingdetailedquestionsaboutthefacilitiesofthe

Wiesbadenmedicalcomplex,accordingtoMoffitt.

Sofar,Jacobsenhasrefusedtoanswerquestionsabouthisfivehundredand

twenty-fourdaysasahostage.Speakingbrieflytoreportsafterhisarrivalin

Wiesbadenthismorning,hesaidhisjoyatbeingfreewassomewhatdiminished

byhisconcernfortheotherhostagesleftbehind.HethankedtheUSgovernment

andPresidentRonaldReaganforhelpingtosecurehisrelease.Jacobsenalso

gavespecialthankstoTerryWaite,anenvoyoftheArchbishopofCanterbury,for

saidtheystilldonotknowhowmanydaysJacobsenwillremainfortestsand

debriefingsessionsbeforereturningtotheUnitedStateswithhisfamily.For

hislifetime,Maobecameacultfigure,butthecurrentgovernmenthastriedto

"LittleRedBook"ofQuotationsfromChairmanMao.Alongwiththepolitical

writing,Maowrotepoetryaswell—poemsabouttherevolution,theRedArmy,

poemsaboutnature.WillisBarnstonehastranslatedsomeofMao'sworkand

considershimanoriginalmaster,oneofChina'smostimportantpoets.

"Hadhenotbeenarevolutionary,perhapshispoetrywouldnothavebeenas

interestingbecausehispersonalpoetrywasthehistoryofChina.Atthesame

timebecausehewasafamousrevolutionaryandleader,ithasprejudicedmost

people,almostcorrectly,todismisshispoetryassimplytheworkofamanwho

achievedfameelsewhere."

"ButhisworkwasnotdismissedwithinChinathough?"

"Well,nowifsalmostconsciouslyforgotten.ButwhenIwastherein72,you

speakerofIran'sparliamentassayingPresidentReagansentthegrouptoTehran

posingasaircraftcrewmen.HesaidtheycarriedwiththemaBiblesignedbythe

Presidentandacake.Hesaidthepresentsweredesignedtoimproverelations

betweenthetwocountries.NeithertheReaganAdministrationnorMcFarlanehad

anycommentonthereport.

TherewerepublishedreportsintheMiddleEastthathostageDavidJacobsen

wasfreedasaresultofnegotiationsbetweentheUnitedStatesandIran.Asked

aboutthattoday,AnglicanChurchenvoyTerryWaitesaidthathedidn'twantto

commentonthepoliticaldynamics.ButWaitesaidhemayknowwithinthenext

twenty-fourhoursfromhiscontactsifhewillbereturningtoBeiruttonegotiate

Jacobsenwasreunitedwithhisfamilytoday,butagainsaidhisjoycouldnotbe

completeuntiltheotherhostagesarefreed.Heappearedonthehospitalbalcony

withhisfamilyandtalkedwithreporters.HospitaldirectorColonelCharlesMoffitt

saysJacobsenneedstocommunicatewithpeoplenow."Helikestotalk,whether

thatbetoagroupofpressortoindividualphysicians.Onceyougethimstarted

onasubject,hewantstotalkbecausehehasn'tbeenabletodothat."Moffitt

saysJacobsenisingoodhealthandwillnotneedfollowupmedicalcare.

Alowtomoderateturnoutisreportedacrossthenationsofaronthiselection

day.VotersarechoosingmembersoftheonehundredthCongress,thirty-four

senatorsandallfourhundredthirty-fivemembersoftheUSHouseof

Representatives.OneofthebigquestionsiswhichPartywillcontroltheSenate

aftertoday'svoting.

PresidentReagan'sformerNationalSecurityAdvisor,RobertMcFarlane,andfour

otherAmericansmayhavevisitedTehranrecentlyonasecretdiplomaticmission.

Today,ontheseventhanniversaryoftheseizureoftheUSembassyinTehran,

IranSpeakeroftheParliamentsaidthevisitingAmericanswereheldforfivedays

beforebeingexpelledfromthecountry.NPRwasunabletoreachMr.McFarlane

todayforcommentandtheWhiteHousesaysthatitcanneitherconfirmnordeny

thestory.NPR'sElizabethColtonreports.

TodayinTehran,SpeakeroftheParliament,HashamiRafsanjanitookthe

occasiontotellarallythatPresidentReaganhadrecentlysentpersonalenvoys

toIran,callingforimprovementofrelations.InresponsetotheAmerican

overtures,RafsanjaniannouncedthatIranwilladviseitsfriendsinLebanon,in

otherwordsthehostagetakers,tofreeUSandFrenchhostagesifIsraelfrees

Lebaneseprisoners,andiftheAmericanandFrenchgovernmentsendtheir

hostilitytotherevolutionarygovernmentofIran.Rafsanjanithenreportedly

describedforthetensofthousandsoutsidehisparliament,thevisitofthefive

Americanemissaries.TheIraniansaidtheyflewin,posingastheflightcrewofa

planebringingAmericanmilitarysparepartstoIranfromEurope.TheUSenvoys

reportedlycarriedIrishpassports,nowsaidtobeheldbyIranianofficials.And

oneofthemencalledhimselfMcFarlane.AndaccordingtoRafsanjani,helooked

exactlylikePresidentReagan'sformerNationalSecurityAdvisor.Rafsanjani

claimedthatIraniansecurityofficialsalsohaveatapeoftelephone

conversationsbetweentheAmericanPresidentandhisenvoys,TheIranian

cleric,Rafsanjani,saidthefivemenwereconfinedtoahotelforfivedaysand

laterdeportedafterAyatollahKhomeiniadvisedIranianofficialsnottomeetthem

orreceivetheirmessage.RafsanjanisaidtheAmericanshadbroughtaBible

signedbyPresidentReaganandakey-shapedcakewhichtheysaidwasthe

symbolofthehopeofreopeningUS-lranrelations.InTehrantoday,atthe

ceremonymarkingtheanniversaryoftheseizureoftheAmericanembassy,

ParliamentarySpeakerRafsanjanidescribedthevisitbytheAmericanemissaries

asasignofWashington'shelplessness.TheWhiteHousesaiditwouldneither

confirmnordenythereports,becauseaccordingtothepressoffice,thereare

certainmatterspertainingtoeffortstotrytoreleasethehostages,andcomments

mightjeopardizethem.RobertMcFarlane,whowasalsoafrequentpolitical

commentatorforNPR'smorningedition,hasbeenunavailableforcomment.Iam

Overthelastfewyearsandaroundthecountry,thenumberoffundamentalist

religiousgroupsissaidtobegrowing.Somearecalled"ultra-fundamentalist"

groups.Theestimatesvariedgreatly.Thenumbercouldbeashighastwo

thousand.Theseorganizationshavedifferentpurposesandbeliefs,butusually

haveonethingincommon—strongleadership,quiteoftenoneperson.Four

yearsagoinOctoberatafundamentalistChristiancommuneinWestVirginia,a

youngboydiedafterapaddlingsessionthatlastedfortwohours.Thechildwas

spankedbyhisparents.Hehadhitanotherchildandrefusedtosayhewassorry.

Wereportedthestoryofthatpaddling—thestoryoftheStonegateCommunityin

Novemberof1982.Sincethattime,Stonegateleaderhasbeentriedand

convicted,oneofthefirsttimesaleaderofareligiousgrouphasbeenheld

responsiblefortheactionsofamember.Alsointhattimetheparentsofthechild

haveservedjailterms,andnowtheyhaveagreedtotelltheirstory.

TheStonegateCommunewasnearCharleston,WestVirginia,inthenortheast

cornerofthestate.It(smostlyfarmingcountry.TheStonegatememberslived

outsideoftowninanoldwhiteVictorianhouse,overlookingtheShenandoah

River,eightyoungfamilieslivingandworkingtogether.Theydidsomefarming,

someconstructionworkandforatimeranarestaurantinCharleston.Itwastheir

intentiontobecomelessofacommuneandmoreofacommunity,withthe

familieslivinginseparatehousesontheproperty.WewenttoStonegateona

SundayeveninginNovemberof1982.Wewerereluctantlywelcomed.Lessthan

amonthbefore,twoStonegatemembershadbeenindictedforinvoluntary

manslaughter.TheyweretheparentsofJosephGreen,whowastwoyearsold

whenhedied.OnthisnightmanyoftheStonegatepeopleweredefensive,almost

angry.

Thatwasfouryearsago.Theparents,StewartandLeslieGreen,wereconvicted

ofinvoluntarymanslaughterandbothspentayearinjail.FirstStewart,then

Leslie.Theninaseparatelegalaction,theleaderoftheStonegatecommune,

DorothyMcLellanwasalsoindicted.McLellandidnottakepartinthepaddling

butshewasfoundguiltyofinvoluntarymanslaughterandconspiracyinthe

deathofJoeyGreen.StewartGreen,thefather,testifiedagainstDorothy

McLellan.GreennowbelievesthathissondiedbecauseofMcLellan'steachings

andinfluence.HeexplainedincourtthattheStonegatemembersweretaught

thatapaddlingsessionshouldcontinueuntilthechildapologizes.Greenalso

testifiedthatafour-hourspankingofDorothyMcLellan'sgrandson,Danny,had

occurredtwoweeksbeforeJoeyGreen'sdeath.HealsosaidtheStonegate

members,whenJoeydied,joinedinapledgeofsecrecy:thecircumstances

wouldbecoveredup;thedeathwouldbecalledanaccident.Theywereafraidall

theStonegatechildrenwouldbetakenaway.Joey'sparentsatfirstagreedtothis.

Itwaslaterthattheyspokeoutagainstwhattheycalledthenaconspiracyof

silence.BothStewartandLeslieGreengrewupandmarriedwithintheStonegate

community.LesliewasonlyfifteenwhenshecametotheStonegate.Theylived

withseveralotherteenagersinthehomeofDorothyandJohnMcLellan.The

McLellanshadbeentakinginyoungpeoplewhowerehavingtrouble,usually

withdrugs.TheywantedtousetheirmarriageasanexampleofChristianfamily

life.JohnMcLellanworkedforanaccountingfirm,travelingduringtheweek,Dot

McLellanstayingathome,takingcareofmoreandmoreteenagers.TheGreens

arenowlivingintheirfirstrealhometogether,anapartmentinBaltimore.Stewart

lefttheStonegate,andLesliejoinedhimassoonasshegotoutofjail.The

GreenshavenowagreedtotalkabouttheirlivesatStonegateandaboutthe

paddlingoftheirson.

effectsonblackworkers,injuretheSouthAfricaneconomywhichhas,onthe

whole,weakenedthepremisesofapartheidandprovidedameansofimproving

thelivingstandardsandskillsofmanypeopleotherwisedisadvantagedby

apartheid,anditmightlimittheextentofUSinfluenceinSouthAfrica."State

SouthAfrica.

MorethanfiftyblackyouthswerearrestedtodayinHarare,Zimbabwe,when

policebrokeupdemonstrationsatSouthAfricanofficesandtheUSembassy.

JulieFredricksreports."Agroupofmorethanathousandstudentsandyouths

causedthousandsofdollarsofdamagebyburningandstoningtheofficesofthe

SouthAfricantrademission,SouthAfricanAirways,AirMalawi,andthe

MalawianHighCommission.ThedemonstratorssuspectedSouthAfrican

complicityintheplanecrashthatkilledMozambiquanPresidentMachelinSouth

AfricaandblamedMalawiforsupportingthePretoria-backedinsurgentsthatare

attackingMozambique.Zimbabweangovernmentofficialsappealedforcalm,and

astatementfromPrimeMinisterMugabejustbackfromatriptoLondonis

meetings.AmongtheissuesonhisagendaareeconomicrelationswiththeUS

PresidentReaganwasdominatedbytherecentUS-Sovietsummitmeetingin

WhilenomajoragreementwassignedbytheUnitedStatesandtheSovietUnion

inReykjavik,thetwocountriesmadeprogressinarmscontroltalksinareasthat

areacentralconcerntoAmerica'sEuropeanallies.Thoseparticularareas

involvedisarmamentproposalsmadeinIceland,affectingmedium-range

missilesandlong-rangemissilesoverwhichallieshavevoicedsome

reservations.ThiswasamajortopicofdiscussionwithChancellorKohltoday,

eventhoughhisForeignMinisterwasbriefedbytheUSSecretaryofStateonly

lastweek.InremarkswelcomingChancellorKohl,PresidentReagansoundeda

positivenote,sayingthattherewasamplereasonforoptimism."Whenthenext

agreementisfinallyreachedwiththeSovietUnion,andIsaywhen,notif,itwill

notbetheresultofweaknessoftimidityonthepartofWesternnations.Instead,

itwillflowfromourstrength,realismandunity."ThePresidentalsoexplained

thatachievingsuchanagreementwoulddependuponpushingaheadwithhis

StrategicDefenseInitiative,SDI,becauseitofferedprotectionagainstcheating.

ButmembersofNATO,includingGermany,haveexpressedconcernthat

eliminatingmedium-rangemissilesinEuropeaswasproposedinReykjavik

wouldpotentiallyleaveEuropevulnerabletotheSovietshorter-rangemissiles

andgreatersuperiorityinconventionalforces.TheyexpresseddoubtsthatSDI

couldmakeupforthosedeficiencies.Theallies,inparticularWestGermany,

wantreductionsinmedium-rangemissilestiedtoreductionsinshorter-range

missilesandconventionalforces.ChancellorKohlwasexpectedtopressthese

pointsandtourgePresidentReagantocompromiseonSDItokeeptalks

betweentheUSandtheSovietsmoving.Speakingthroughaninterpreterinhis

arrivalremarks,KohldidnotmentionSDI,"Itremainsourgoal,andIknowthatI

sharedwithyou,Mr.President,tocreatepeaceandsecuritywitheverfewer

weapons.InReykjavik,thankstoyourseriousandconsistenteffortsinpursuitof

peace,amajorstepwastakeninthisdirection.Andwemustnowtakethe

opportunitiesthatpresentthemselveswithoutendangeringourdefensive

capability."

AfterthemeetingbetweenKohlandthePresident,asenioradministrationofficial

quotedKohlassayingthathehasalwaysbeeninfavoroftheStrategicDefense

system.AttheWhiteHouse,I'mBrendaWilson.

AgroupofbusinessleadersinBostontodayannouncedplanstoexpanda

collegescholarshipprogramtoincludeanyeligibleBostonhighschoolgraduate.

Thebusinessleadersannouncedplansforapermanentfive-milliondollar

endowmentfund,andtheyalsopromisetohireanyofthestudentswhogoonto

completetheircollegeeducations.AndrewKafferyofmemberstationWBURhas

thereport.

TheBostonbusinesscommunity'sinvolvementintheBostonpublicschool

datesbackalmosttwentyyears,fromworkinternshipstoanendowment

programforBostonteachers.Businesshaspumpedmorethanonemillion

dollarsintothepublicschools.Nowbusinessleaderssaythey'rereadytomake

theirbiggestcommitmentyet:amulti-milliondollarscholarshipprogramthatwill

enablethecity'spoorestkidstogoontocollegeandtojobsafterward.The

programiscalledActionCenterforEducationalServicesandScholarships,or

ACESS.AccordingtoDanielCheever,thePresidentofBoston'sWheelock

College,ACESSinnotablankcheckfortheeligiblegraduates."FirstWellhelp

themgetasmuchaidastheycanfromothersources,andsecondly,wellprovide

thelastdollarscholarship.Ishouldadd,ofcourse,theyhavetoqualifyfor

financialaid;thatis,we'renothandingoutmoneytostudentswhodon'tneedit."

Theaveragegrantisaroundfivehundreddollarsandalreadytheprogramhas

givenonehundredBostonstudentsmorethanfiftythousanddollarsin

scholarshipmoney.

Otherassistancefromtheprogramhashelpedthosestudentsraisemorethan
