Executivesummary

ACCA'sinauguralannualtalent-trendssurveyinaccountancyandfinanceshowsaprofessionin

workplacetransition,grapplingwithamultitudeofshort-termchallenges,aswellasbiglonger-

termquestions.WiththelegacyoftheCovid-19crisisirrevocablychangingourrelationshipwith

theworkplace,theresultsarecolouredbyagloomyeconomicoutlookacrosstheglobaleconomy.

Thissurveyof8,405professionalaccountantsacross148countries,oneofthelargesteverstudies

acrosstheprofession,suggestsemployeesarefacingsignificantchallengesfromworkplace

stressandacost-of-livingcrisis.Employersarefacingapotentialtalentcrunch,adaptingand

experimentingwithnewwaysofworkingacrosstheworkforce.

Theimpactofinflationontherealwagesofemployeesishybrid,yetoverhalfofsurveyrespondentssuggest

isgivenasrespondents'biggestwork-relatedconcerntheirorganisationsarenotcurrentlyembracingthistype

forthefuture.It'sthebiggestworryforbothmaleandofflexibleworkingpractice,withregionalandsector

femalerespondentsandcutsacrosseveryregioninthedisparitiesinadoption.While70%ofrespondentsclaim

world.Inalmosteverysectortheissueisthetopconcerntheyaremoreproductiveworkingremotely,some

too,presentingadditionalchallengesforemployersinemployersarelesssure,suggestingthatproductivityand

keepingupwithwagedemandsinaprofessionwherecollaborationcouldbecompromised.Someemployees

careermobilityopportunitiesremainhigh.Remunerationtoociteconcernsontheimpactofremoteworkon

isidentifiedasoneofthetopattractionfactorstocollaborationandteamwork,thoughfinanceprofessionals

organisationsforemployees,yetsatisfactionlevelswithworkinginhybridrolesappearhappieratworkthanthose

payarelaggingbehind.Whilstinflationmaystarttoeaseworkingfulltimeintheo仟ice.

overthefirst6monthsof2023,itremainstobeseenhow

thepossibilityofabroadereconomicslowdownacrossthe

worldimpactsthesituation.

ThepromiseofgreaterflexibilityintheworkplacebutconcernsprevailtSSIsecurityinturbulenttimes

doesn'tappeartobealleviatingkeymentalhealthRespondentsoverwhelminglyclaimtounderstandhowAcareerinaccountancyisstillseenasasmartchoicefor

pressures.Well-beingandmentalhealtharethesecondtechnologyhelpsthemaddvalueintheirorganisationsorthoseseekinglong-termcareerprospects.Theopportunity

highest-ratedworkconcernforthefuture.Thedatatotheirclients,butthere'saskillsgap,with86%wantingtoacquireaprofessionalqualificationwhichaffordscross-

isclear-61%reportthattheirmentalhealthsuffersmoretrainingsupportontechnologyfromtheiremployers,sectoralandinternationalmobilityfurtheraddstothe

becauseofworkpressures,71%wantmorehelpfromtheirand42%claimingtobeoverwhelmedbythepaceofperceptionthatchoosingaccountancyasacareerpath

organisationsinmanagingtheirmentalhealth,andalmosttechnologicalchangeimpactingtheirjobs.Remarkably,providesjoboptionalityandadegreeofjobsecurityin

half(49%)stilldon'tthinktheirorganisationconsidersthedatarevealsparticularlyconcernsabouttechnologychallengingeconomictimes.There'sgoodnews,too,about

mentalhealthtobeapriority.It#snosurprisethat88%expressedbyyoungeremployeesintheworkplace.Gentheperceptionofthebroadercontributionaccountants

wantabetterwork-lifebalance,butourdataalsosuggestsZmaybethe'digitalnatives',butitzslikelythey'reatthecanmaketosocietyandtheenvironment.Yetwithrapid

youngerpeoplearemorelikelytosaytheirmentalhealthsharpendoftechnologicalchange,deliveringoperationallyworkforcechangeandachallengingeconomy,thenarrative

issufferingbecauseofworkpressures,andmorelikelytofocusedjobsdaytoday,andwitnesstothesheerspeedsuggeststhatpersonalmotivations,andindividualcareer

wantmoresupportfromtheiremployers.ofdigitaltransformation.ThoseintheBigFouraccountingadvancementaretheprimarymotivationsforpursuing

firmsandrespondentsfromacademiawerethemostlikelycareersinaccountancyrightnow.Foryoungerpeoplein
