SILENTGENERATIONNearlyfiftymillionAmericanswereborntotheSilentGenerationinAmericafromthebeginningof1925through1942.Thisgenerationiscomparativelysmallwhencomparedtothesurroundinggenerationsbecausepeoplehadfewerchildreninthe1920sand1930s,inresponsetofinancialandglobalinsecurity.Silentsareabout95%retiredatthispoint.TheSilentGenerationwasthegenerationbornbetweenthetwoWorldWars,whoweretooyoungtojointheservicewhenWorldWarIIstarted.ManyhadfatherswhoservedinWorldWarI.SILENTGENERATIONSILENTGENERATIONTECHNOLOGYRadioandTelevisionCOREVALUESPatrioticConformersDisciplineRespectforAuthoritySILENTGENERATIONEXPERIENCESWWI/WWIIHolocaustGreatDepressionRoaring20’sFDRAdministrationSILENTGENERATIONMembersofthisgenerationexperiencedvastculturalshiftsintheU.S.,andstruggledwithconflictmorals,ideas,anddesires.
The1920'swas,for8yearsand3/4of1929,averyhappydecade.Thelast1/4wastheStockMarketCrashthatcouldhavestartedtheGreatDepressionthatlastedstraightthroughthe1930's,notendinguntilmid-1940.Awarstartedbefore1920,andawarbrokeoutin1929.AlthoughitwascalledtheGreatDepression,peoplekilledothers,killedthemselves,becamehomeless,andbecamepenniless.Actually,theeightyearsofhappinessmighthavefeltlikeasmallvacationtoapersonwholivedduringthetime.
BABYBOOMERSBabyBoomersisthenamegiventothegenerationofAmericanswhowerebornina"babyboom"followingWorldWarII.TheyoungestgroupofBabyBoomersaremanagingtheMillennialsandGeneration-Xgroupsofemployees-andinsomecases,beingmanagedbythem.TheUnitedStatesexperiencedanexplosionofbirths(hencethenamebabyboom)thatcontinuedforthenext18years,whenthebirthratebegantodrop.In1964,babyboomersrepresented40%ofthepopulation,whichmeansthatmorethanonethirdofthepopulationwasunder19yearsofage.Sincebabyboomersmakeupsuchasizableportionoftheconsumingpublic,theirspendinghabitsandlifestyleshaveapowerfulinfluenceontheeconomy.BABYBOOMERSBABYBOOMERSEXPERIENCESColdWar/VietNamManontheMoonCivilRightsSexualRevolutionEnergyCrisisWatergateBABYBOOMERSTECHNOLOGYTelevisionCOREVALUESOptimismInvolvementBABYBOOMERSFortheyears1940-1994,inclusive,202millionAmericanswereborn;about77%ofallAmericansnowlivingwerebornafter1939.Duringthebabyboomeryears,1946-1964(inclusive),75.8millionAmericanswereborn.Theratioofmalestofemaleshasstayedrelativelyconstant.Therewereapproximately1.05malebirthsforeveryonefemalebirth.Thebiggestyearoftheboomwas1957,when4.3millionboomerswereborn.Whyittookover10yearsforsomanypost-WorldWarIIfamiliestogetgoingisamatterofspeculation.Forthe5-yearperiodbetween1956and1960,inclusive,21.2millionboomerswereborn,nearly11/2timesthenumberbornbetween1941and1945,andthelargestforany5-yearperiodinthe20thcentury.Boomerstodayrepresent28%oftheU.S.population.Butin1964,theyrepresentedabout40%ofthepopulation.Inotherwords,in1964morethanathirdofthepopulationwasunder19yearsold!Nowonderthebabyboomersattractedsomuchattention.GENERATIONXERSIntheU.S.GenerationXwasoriginallyreferredtoasthe"babybust"generationbecauseofthedropinthebirthratefollowingthebabyboom.Thisgenerationsawtheinceptionofthehomecomputer,theriseofvideogames,andlatertheinternetasatoolforeconomicpurposes:Dots,MTV,Grungemusic,HiphopcultureandSecurity-Momsattributedtothisgeneration.TheUSCensusBureaucitesthisgroup(GenerationX)asstatisticallyholdingthehighesteducationlevelswhenlookingatagegroupGENERATIONXERSGENERATIONXERSTECHNOLOGYHomeComputerVideoGamesDot-ComboomandbustCOREVALUESSkepticismFunInformalityIndependentGENERATIONXERSEXPERIENCESRoevs.WadeChallengerDisasterPersianGulfWarO.J.SimpsontrialClintonAdministrationGENERATIONXERSAccordingtoU.S.CensusBureaustatistics,83.8millionpeoplewereinthe25-44-year-oldGenerationXagebracket.GenXersareintheirpeakyearsofproductandserviceconsumptionanditsmembersviewelectronicmediaasaprimarytoolforconductingresearchandaccomplishingtasks.
Themediatheyusearefragmented.Theyembraceawiderrangeoflifestylesthanpreviousgenerations.WeanedonMTVandcabletelevision,theyarelargelyimmunetotraditionaladvertising.Facedwithstagnantwagesandhighdebt,theyaremorecostconsciousthanfree-spendingboomers.
MILLENNIALSTheGenerationYaresometimescalledthe"TrophyGeneration",or"TrophyKids,"atermthatreflectsthetrendincompetitivesports(aswellasmanyotheraspectsoflife)where"nooneloses"andeveryonegetsa"ThanksforParticipating"trophy.Trophykidsdevelopedpressuretoexcelnotonlyinschool,butalsohobbies,sportsandservicework.Arecentsurvey,theyfoundthat97%ofstudentsownedacomputer,94%ownedacellphone,and56%ownedanmp3player(iPod,Zune,Sansa,etc.).TheyarethemosteducatedgenerationintheUnitedStatescurrently.[MILLENNIALSMILLENNIALSEXPERIENCES9/11-WorldTradeCenterattackOklahomabombingsKidsshootingkidsCorporatescandalsGeorgeW.BushMILLENNIALSTECNOLOGYGrewupwithTechnologyInternetPlayStation/XboxesCOREVALUESRealismConfidenceExtremefunSocialMILLENNIALSSixteenpercentgrewup—orarecurrentlygrowingup—inpoverty.
