Thestudyfollowedcloseto3,600African-Americanadults.Almostone-thirdofthem

watchedTVformorethanfourhoursaday.Alittlemorethan(one-thirdofthesubjectsspent

betweentwoandfourhoursadaysittinginfrontoftheTV.TheremainingthirdwatchedTVfor

lessthantwohoursaday.Researchersfollowedthegroupforanaverageof8.4years.Duringthe

study,205ofthesubjectsdiedand129otherssufferedaheartattackorstroke(中风).

Comparedtopeoplewhowatchedlessthantwohoursoftelevisiondaily,thosewhospent

morethanfourhoursinfrontoftheTVwere49percentmorelikelytodieorhaveaheartattack

orstroke.ButtheundesirablehealtheffectsofwatchingT/appearedtobelimitedtoadultswho

failedtogettherecommendedamountofweeklyexercise.Thatisaround150minutesofmild

physicalactivityon75minutesofstrongexerciseeveryweek.

Thestudyhadsomelimitations,however.LinYang,anotherresearcher,saysthatsittingin

frontof

theTVmightbeworsethansittingatadeskbecausepeoplesnackwhilewatchingTV.

Somepeoplesimplystayuptoolateanddonotgetenoughsleep.

"Eatingtreatsorlackofsleepcouldbothcauseweightgainandincreaseriskfactorsforheart

disease.Thesefactorscouldmakepeoplemorelikelytodieearly,"sheadded.
