Usingagriculturalsurveysandmodellingwork,scientistspredictedthepotentialrangeofensetoverthenextfourdecades.Theyfoundthecropcouldpotentiallyfeedmorethan100millionpeopleandboostfoodsecurityinEthiopiaandotherAfricancountries,includingKenya,UgandaandRwanda.
StudyresearcherDrJamesBorrell,oftheRoyalBotanicGardens,Kew,saidplantingenset,asanalternativeforleantimes,couldhelpboostfoodsecurity.“It’sgotsomereallyunusualfeaturesthatmakeitabsolutelyuniqueasacrop,”hesaid.“Youplantitatanytime,youharvestitatanytime.That’swhytheycallitthetreeagainsthunger.”
Thereisgrowinginterestinseekingnewplantstofeedtheworld,givenourrelianceonafewstaplecrops.Nearlyhalfofallthecaloriesweeatcomefromthreespecies—rice,wheat,andmaize.“Weneedtodiversifytheplantsweusegloballyasaspeciesbecausealloureggsareinaverysmallbasketatthemoment,”saidDrBorrell.

Toachievecausalevidence,theresearchersfromthegroupexaminedbrainactivityinregionsinvolvedinstressprocessingin63healthyvolunteersbeforeandafteraone-hourwalkinGrunewaldforestorashoppingstreetwithtrafficinBerlin.Theresultsrevealedthatactivityintheamygdaladecreasedafterthewalkinnature,suggestingthatnaturehasbeneficialeffectsonbrainregionsrelatedtostress.
“Theresultssupportthepreviouslyassumedpositiverelationshipbetweennatureandbrainhealth,butthisisthefirststudytoprovethecausallink.Interestingly,thebrainactivityaftertheurbanwalkintheseregionsremainedstableandshowednoincreases,whicharguesagainstacommonlyheldviewthaturbanexposurecausesadditionalstress,”explainsSimoneKühn,headofthegroup.
Theauthorsshowthatnaturehasapositiveimpactonbrainregionsinvolvedinstressprocessingandthatitcanalreadybeobservedafteraone-hourwalk.Thiscontributestotheunderstandingofhowourphysicallivingenvironmentaffectsbrainandmentalhealth.Evenashortexposuretonaturedecreasesamygdalaactivity,suggestingthatawalkinnaturecouldserveasapreventivemeasureagainstdevelopingmentalhealthproblemsandreducingthepotentiallydisadvantageousimpactofthecityonthebrain.
